RF Neptune 1892 CARD 1:250 scale

These photos display the finished results of my replication of RF Neptune at 1:250 scale in CARD.

Recreating this old vessel (Scratch Build) was like an adventure in archeology.

That formed a large part of my attraction and motivation for this project. It was a nautical modeling voyage into the unknown .   .   .  and a lot of fun.

This was one in a class of three called the “Marceau” class of ironclads of the French Navy built in the 1880s and early 1890s. The class comprised Marceau, the lead ship, Neptune, and Magenta.  A fourth member of the class, Hoche was re-designed after defects in the original plans for the class could not be corrected. They introduced the four-way arrangement for their main battery, with one each at the bow and stern, and guns on the port and starboard beam. The ships were based on the earlier Amiral Baudin class of barbette ships, but with four 340 mm (13.4 in) weapons compared to the three 420 mm (16.5 in) guns of the earlier vessels.

The model frame and decks are made of 65lb card.  Most of the rest, including railing and rigging, is made of 22lb and 28lb paper.

Most of the parts and assemblies were hand cut.  Some laser cut parts were used as seen in the bow anchor hoists and the stern boat davits.  Mast spars and ventilator bowls are made of wood and the anchor chains are metal.

The model was completed in early June of 2024.

Kind Regards,

Mike
