schnu got a reaction from avsjerome2003 in La Candelaria by schnu - OcCre - bomb vessel - first build
Hello
Like always my progress is slow . I took a little brake from ship modelling, but now that I have vacations I hope to get something done. I have continued to work on the stern for the past two days. I had problems bending the stern, because of its thickness and because of the plywood on which I glued the wood strips on.
So I took away the windows and `sanded away` the plywood. This worked fairly well, but it led to a problem. Now that the wood strips are only glued to each other, the structure is less stable. I hope that it won`t lead to a bigger problem.
I have changed my mind about the cabin - I will not do the inside. This is only my first build and I don`t feel that I could do something nice with the inside of the cabin. So I just put the floor and that's it. I hope that in my next build I will be able to do more with the cabin.
I have also added the windows on the side galleries.
As always any advice is welcome
Yes Jan-Willem, the disc sander is very helpful. I was able to get the right angles and it is quite precise. It can also sand lots of material if needed, but the dust it makes cannot be missed . But I guess that a small disc-sander is nothing compared to one that is almost 1 meter big .

Progress has been a bit slow mainly due to having a bout of flu which laid me up for over two weeks.
The first photos show the tac toggles some start at a block and some go through a rope loop. The next part of the rigging was to add the leechlines and the buntlines to the fore & main yards and the crossjack,I then added the cluelines and sheets to all three masts,I am not adding the tac sheets for the moment to give access, the next decision, is wether to add the braces before the gaffs and the spritsail yard are fitted as some braces are rigged to the gaffs its is still a mater of turning space.

Hola:
To completely finish my Vasa I made the display case to protect it from dust. Now is in the place where I had the HMS Pandora, which I returned to the hobby room.

Hi friends:
Finally the time has arrived. After 15 months of spending many hours of fun with the construction of Vasa, yesterday I finished placing flags and banners and also the hand railings. Today, a little sadly, I have started to save and organize tools and materials as well as the workbench.
I decided that before starting with the new project, the "Pride of Baltimore", I have to design and make a display cabinet for the exhibition of some of the models, since I have no place in the house to place another ship individually.
Here some pictures of my finished model.
Some having as backround the bay where I lived:
Some details:
And some simulating that it is a "real" ship on the Miramar Bay at Guaymas:
Saludos and see you in my next project.
PS: I want the opportunity to thank all the people that follow my log and specially to my Vasa mates for they encouragement and help. Also for all the likes I received throughout my work.

Here is the hull first plank and rough sanded. Turned out well only a small amount of filler.
Threw in a pic or two of a plank tapered and bent.

Amazing build, good luck on your next build, with those skills I am sure that it will be a nice model too. I am wondering, how are you going to handle the dust that will settle on the ship?

Congratulations for your new work. As always your work is breath-taking, a true piece of art, I was asking myself how you handle the dust, as your other models do not seem to be in a case. I hope that you will have a pleasant experience at your new job.
Good luck and a happy new year.

Thanks Magee. The progress I made is small, (vacations and I had to order some things). Anyway I have fixed the errors that I found with the stern and fitted the window frames. (I still need to do some sanding)
I have made some small progress with the cabin too. When the things arrive I can continue to work on the stern window.

Now find this much improved version of the spyglass setting with another character. Although my vacation is over the topic is gaining speed now as I have accomplished my workflow and mastered several difficult issues in the area of cloth simulation with the "marvelous designer" program. Another rendering will follow soon.

Hi guys:
After just over two weeks I am back putting some of the advances in the forum. This is because I've been working on coiling ropes, a painstaking work and a bit boring. To do it it was necessary: first to adjust the tension of the standing and running rigging, fixing them with diluted white glue to its corresponding place, cutting the extra lengths and finally making and fixing a fake coiling rope to put over the belaying pins.
I hope to finish it soon to follow with banners, railings and other details.
Saludos, Karl

Hi together...
This is probably my last update of my Royal Caroline log. I am ready, have ordered the hood, made the stand and took all the pics for the gallery. The gallery will be open soon, perhaps I will upload the pics today, perhaps tomorrow.
I thank you all again - it was a funny and really good time. One of the pics show my two models - the Half Moon and the Royal Caroline - a nice small fleet with nearly the same scale. And the last picture gives an Impression of the next project - the Endeavour.
I will see you all again as soon as I start the Endeavour. This will be not before March.
Enjoy the pics and come by to my gallery the next days. I will follow several logs and stay online - of course. When you start wooden modelling... well, you can't stop it so easy
Cheerio my friends

Hi, so my progress was slower than usual once more, but tomorrow school starts again, so maybe my progress will be better. (My teacher probably does not agree ). Anyway, today I started to cut out the side windows. I have used varnish for the stern windows.
I hope you all had excellent vacations and a Happy New Year to everyone.

Thanks Sjors !!
I know, I know.., I didn’t planned all this from the beginning at all..
Mainly thanks to my decision not to use any paint on this model ship makes the “plywood” parts and some of the supplied fittings not so attractive looking..
Today I had some quality time and continued working on the bowsprit..
I started with making and shaping the “Bee Blocks” (the back of them with help of sandpaper and the mast) so they should be a perfect fit.
..Milled a groove in the Jib boom for a sheave,
and assembled the dolphin striker ..
a close-up of the assembled Bowsprit Head and the bowsprit with jib boom.
The drawing shows cut-outs in the bowsprit for the gammoning rigging, but instead I glued 2x5 small pieces of wood on the bowsprit and shaped them into so-called “gammoning cleats” by using a scalpel, a few different files and sandpaper for the final finish and not to forget I also added (black) wooldings.
I used the following technique for securing the wooldings.
What remains are the blocks and hearts (but after having looked at them) I will most likely "somehow" make my own.

Thank you Sjors & CaptainSteve & all the likes !!!
After spending "months” on building the ships boats, it is nice to start on something else Today I started looking at the anchors and after some research I found out that the included (cast metal) "stock" is not in the correct scale. At least in the 18 century the stock has the same length as the shank, so I made a new stock for all 4 anchors. Thanks to this research I also found out that the anchor-ring has to be covered with “tarred cloth, rope and yarn” .. So I gave it a try but failed miserably the first few times .. and I’m not going to show my first results.. “learning by doing” (and thank god for the invention of thin CA glue) I “developed” the following technique.. After positioning “5 pcs.” of Ø0,35mm ropes with my hands, I used thin CA glue to “fix” these ropes temporary in position, I wrapped the ropes several times around the ring and placed the ring in a vice so I could “permanently” fix the ropes with "common whipping". Common whipping: I cut the ropes just before the whipping by using a sharp scalpel blade and use thin CA glue to prevent any unraveling. After having wrapped the ropes all the way, I use the same technique again: fixing the ropes with CA glue, whipping, cut the ropes and “securing” with thin CA glue. I’m satisfied with the end-result, but naturally “Macro pictures” shows every mistake .. -

Part 2
The yards with the stun-sails booms have domed end brackets with legs, these do require some fettling, I first thinned the legs both inside and outside as they are way to thick to start with, they were glued to the end of the yard, and reshaped (see photos) I then added the rope lashings, I then made a dummy stun sail boom ( the real ones will made from hard wood dowel) to allow the brackets to be aligned, next the mid yard boom brackets were fixed to the yard in conjunction with the outer boom brackets which are not yet glued in, both brackets were set up so that the the rear edge of the boom is over the front edge of the yard which allows the 3mm blocks to be added later, and for them to be in the centre of the top of the yard. I then drilled a hole to the rear of the yard at the centre and added a 1-2mm pin to allow the yard to be fitted to the mast.
Yard end bracket as supplied
After rework
Yard brackets on with dummy boom
All brackets and cleats added

I have now painted the wheelbox. The coaming is mahogany pickle mixed with chocolate brown, since this seemed to match the deck as well as the photos (as far as this can be judged from B&W photos). The sides have chocolate brown inlays and stripes, the main box is paintes in “old white” which is an off-white in a grayish (cold) hue.

HI Gene, nice progress, did you follow the instruction for the deck planking? They look really well done. If the false keel is warped it might become a big problem if you do not fix it, or is it just the photo?

Standing Rigging
With all the shrouds and ratlines tied I decided to add as much of the standing rigging as possible before the topgallants masts went on. Again another small issue not enough 5mm dead eyes, to complete all the back stays to the main mast, so some extras were ordered, there are 88 supplied, which I admit I did not count, but I still counted up 90 needed, and at this point I am 6 short, I may have dropped and lost a couple, but who does not, I also think there should be a few spares built into the kit. Next the main and preventer stays to all three topmasts were made up and added, this did meant that bowsprit needed to be fitted, which has the down side of making it more difficult to turn her round, side to side, when adding rigging to each side.
One aspect, I have been having difficult with, is using the rigging plans, so far I have found that some rigging rope runs overlay others, some of the runs I cannot even work out how they start or how they terminate, maybe it is just me, but, I did not have this problem rigging Pegasus, as a result this promoted me to dig out the Pegasus rigging plans and(in conjunction with Peterssons book), and as Pegasus is a ship rigged Sloop, her and Diana should be rigged nearly the same, so I am using both sets of standing rigging plans, and where I cannot, be sure, or work out, were the rigging runs on Diana s plans go, I will rig her as per Pegasus, this should be OK as naval rigging practices were most likely standard on all ships.

An ”minor” update..
I placed the ships boats into their final position, however also this took much longer time as I had in mind.
First I wasn’t satisfied with the supplied “plywood” crutches, so I decided to make my own.
But I couldn’t find much inspiration for them (so mine are based on the supplied ones) however i think i added a bit more “vintage" to them.
Here’s a “dry fit” picture.
The next thing I decided to make was some mini-hooks for the rigging (This post “LINK” explains in more detail how I made them).
Because I wasn’t happy with the color of the supplied rigging blocks I tried to make a few myself with some darker wood types.
I ended up in using teak (probably not the best choice) as teak is quite grainy, but this was what was available to me.
With this macro shot I can see that the rigging (and the blocks) looks much better from a distance …
Also all the oars needed to be lashed in their final position, and I spend quite some time in “coiling” randomly all the ropes with my previously mentioned (rigging of the cannons) technique.
Too bad that most of all this will be invisible after positioning the second ships boat …
And, “at last”.. I could rigg the boats in position, and (off course) I had to make some extra rope-coils.. Taa-Daaa !!!

Hi Mates:
After almost two weeks of having all my family reunited for the Holidays and not having enough time to work on my ship I finally finished to place the sails on the bowsprit. As with the other sails I have not fixed them permanently until I double check the correct tensions and locations of the rigging yarns. Here some pictures:
Saludos and best wishes for this new year, Karl
