Nice job on the hawse holes, Elijah.  It's always tough drilling big holes in your model!

Once you drill the mast holes, if they're perfect you're good to go.  If they aren't, and your angle is off, or masts aren't lining up in the midline plane, all is not lost!  You can enlarge the hole slightly, and glue in little scraps off wood (wedges) to force the mast to sit in the proper position.  Your kit should provide you with a wooden ring (deck collar) that sits on the deck and circles the mast to cover up the hole you drilled, so no one will see the wedges you used.  That's the way it was actually done with real masts!

Hello again! I hope everyone is doing well! I have been continuing with tiny details. I made the eye bolts by burning of the plastic coating, cleaning them, paining them, and gluing them in the hull. I had drilled small holes in the stanching they are attached to first, as a way to make the connection stronger. I also drilled the hawse pipes. This was a bit nerve racking, but after consulting a few different builders, I was able to do it. I started with a tiny drill bit on the inboard side. I drilled halfway through, and did the same on the outboard side. I then enlarged the hole, and glued on the painted hawse pipe lids. Here are the pictures!

    Until next time!

Now, a few months off perhaps, school holidays and a garden to tend.

Next will be the HMS Victory of Battleships. I've done a bit of internet shopping for a few upgrades as well.

I bough a cheap first version off ebay for a bit of practice months ago, and you can see the hull sizes differ somewhat to the Dreadnought.

Thanks for all the likes and follows.

Well, final net added and the flags, came up OK,.

    Amazing what a difference is in size, the Varyag from 1899, the Emden from 1906;

In an exercise of supreme pointlessness, I have completed the starboard side torpedo nets.

Attaching the nets is somewhat of a nightmare, as the nets do not align to the boom, so I slung them under the booms, which is technically correct anyway. I used some helping hands to align then together and tied them up.

Then the rigging, all those brails finally have some balance and use.

Finally parked up for a while beside her sisters until I get a few more days off to finish the Port side. Then just add some flags and pull the plastic off the base and consign her to the digital graveyard.

Now for the next nerve racking adventure, the torpedo net booms. They have 1mm hooks which need to be glued into the hull points, then rigged up. I have only done the starboard side so far and it appears to have gone to plan, but I will have to add the gangways before I can add the net itself which I am still experimenting with for colour. There are brails which also need to be run but I done think I will as they will not be that visible, or maybe I will. It will get very fragile from here on in.

Next, the awning stanchions. This is pretty much the last of the onboard rigging and makes it all very busy.

The running lines for the torpedo nets are now done, I have added the rear night lifebouys.

Moving along, Pontos has a fairly elaborate set up for the torpedo nets. The AOTS book shows the rigging lines for them, which I shall now have to interpret to get correct.

The shelves on the gunwales hold the nets when stowed, but as they will be deployed, they stand out and are frustrating to place.

I have added the eyelets for the booms and the boat booms.

Finally the net davits, from which I will run the onboard rigging first before I set the booms and nets, again working inboard to outboard, then I can add the awning stanchions, the davits the last of the rigging and the flags, and the ships cats, before the final stage of adding the booms and nets.

Things should move along quickly now. This is the first time I've actually used rails for a ship, as I usually do individual stanchions.

Alright here is the last little bit for tonight, the making of the knightsheads, planking the bow and how I measure the planks. Then finally how she looks before the "final touches" which I will show tomorrow.

Nice, Don.  I love the cherry. also.  This looks like a nice little kit in a great, large scale.

Squaring frames and fairing, only one frame needed minor adjustments, and adding support strips

Support strips added now planking frames and bulkheads

The first of the changes of wood, here I am using cherry for the bottom. It is a flat bottomed boat. looks good and a real treat from the normal planking. I actually finished this and still wanted to do more, how often do you feel like that? Normally it is burn out and you are looking for a drink...........ok no burn out but I still had a drink .

That's it for now I need to go outside to plant and cut grass. No the grass doesn't grow that fast, planting grass in garden area then it's cutting the existing 6 acres of grass. It's not that bad, I have a zero turn lawnmower that helps it go faster. The only problem is you need both hands to operate the lawnmower so no smoking or drinking, so for the next 4 hours I'll be health conscious.
     More to come soon

Hello all and welcome to my build log of the Batelina by MarisStella. I have just completed this kit that I started about 2 1/2 weeks ago and I will now show you the complete build. I decided to hold back on a log thinking it would save some time as I went along, and to give a complete log in a couple of days.
I took on this build after seeing it being built in MarisStella's log here on MSW, and as all my other builds are months if not years from completion I wanted a "completion" in a short time so the Batelina fit that bill.
If you are looking for a real bang for your buck this little kit has it all, the materials are excellent and the skills needed to complete her are far from the beginners level. She is a great little kit to practice your planking skills on and short of rigging and cannons has pretty much all the challenges of a full size ship just at a different level.
The past couple of weeks have been a lot of fun building her and I have defiantly not only learned new skills but have also honed other ones.
I think anyone needing a break from the more complex builds in your life and looking for something on the lighter side this kit is your ticket. And, no, I am not a sales rep for MarisStella
The kit comes with walnut planks to complete the boat and although they were perfectly fine to use I decided to do a little changing and used cherry wood on some parts, and I also added some little extras( I think just to further stall from going to my other builds)

The contents picture is missing a couple of bundles of planks which I missed putting in picture

I am not sure why all these pictures turned out blue as they were taken outside. Test fitting the frames and transferring rabbet line to port side.

My daughter and granddaughter were not near as excited about boat building as me....???? go figure

Hello again! I have been building the cap rail, but am unsure as to how to proceed. The wood is cherry and 1/32" thick. I need to carve and sand it closer to the bulwarks, but it is in a tight spot. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks!

    Good morning Lawrence..
Many thanks for your birthday wishes and for all the nice things you have said regarding the Bluenose build.  I am enjoying building this model and look forward to completing the deck "stuff" so I can get going on the mast structures, etc.  In the meantime here are a couple more photos of the cabin assembly temporarily placed on deck.  A few more aft pieces and then I will begin shaping the masts.  I hope you have a wonderful day and my best regards to your admiral.
    Best,
    Jerry
