  1. Hello Maaaslo Thanks for your compliment, and I hope you will find your enthusiasm back, and get on with building. You might be right about the balso wood for wood carving, but the shop recomended it for me, and I will yet try it out, and see if it will work. if not, I will buy the wood you mentioned. Thanks for the tip by the way. Cheers, Nick
  2. Update Hello everybody Here is finally as promised day 5. I hadn't the time to post it, so it is already a few days ago I started the built by putting the blocks I had got from my uncle (who sawed it on his work) between the bulkheads. The blocks are very nice and straight, because my uncle uses a machine for it, so I'm really happy with that : Each block is numbered with the sizes they are in length (so this one above is 57mm long). As told before, I have measured the lengths between the bulkheads : First I had to sand the glue residues away: And then I putted the first two blocks between the second and third bulkhead, and secured it with my clamps: And then I glued them in place: The glue has to hard, so in the mean while I first decided to sort the strips i had bought, and give them a label with the right sizes, so I can easily find the correct size strip. I also wrote on a piece of paper wich strip i need for each (metal)part : With a list of all the strips: After that, I decided to make already some of the metal parts in wood. I only started on the dinner bell. Much nicer I think : I haven't finished it yet, but I will do that next time (meanwhile I got the second two blocks in place between the bulkheads) And that's it for day 5 The they after (saturday) I will go on holiday (I will be on sailing camp with the scouting ) until sunday the 28th of July. The 25th of July is my birthday, but I'm not at home
  3. Hello Anja Thanks for the complement. My testweek went good, but because of some reasons I didn't make al the tests. Cheers, Nick
  4. Thanks Richard I'm using a really good photo camera, with a very high resolution camara. Sadly is, that I need to resize each photo because the sizes of the photo's are really big when i take them (2,5 mb). I use a very handy photo converter to convert them to 300kb, and then I can easaly post them on the forum. But the quality remains reallyh good, even thought I rezise them. I hope I'm a little clear of what i typed above Next week I'm really busy, so it will take a while when there will be a new update (One day (day 5) i have to post yet, but i haven't got the time for that, because I have a party of my mother, who has succeeded for nursing ) Cheers Nick
  5. Thanks Sjors and ZyXuz for your comments. Sjors, you are right. I have mine from my father, but he did buy it in a warehouse as you said. Cheers, Nick
  6. Update Hello everybody. Here is a little update to my built of the Hermione la Feyette I went yesterday to a local hobby shop 40 kilometres away from my house, to buy some wood strips and planks. This because, as you know, I will be replacing the metal partsd in the kit for wood. For that I need ofcourse wood. I also bought a large plywood plank, to make the lower deck out (because it will be larger ). At last i bought a large plank of balsa wood, wich is perfect for woodworking (to make the lion on the front and other things out) Also, my uncle has sawed for me some really straight blocks out of a plank, to use between the bulkheads. I will show them tomorrow, because then I'm also gonna put then in place The plywood plank: And the block balsa wood (If I type balsa wrong, I'm sorry for that, but then I don't know the english name of it ): And next a lot of wooden strips. There are a lot, but I can also use them in future builts . Luckely for me, the shop had a lot of variation in sizes of the strips, so I could easily pick the right strips: Next I decided to cut the strips in half, so I could easily store them in a box , so I took my Amati wood cutter, and cut al the strips in half (not precisely). And the strips cut into half: And all the wood I now have (strips only) including the strips I had already in the kit a lot of wood i think: And that what I have bought in the shop. I also gonna buy some other thinks, like more guns, but I will do that in a while, but i wait with that. I have called this post a Update 1 because I will have a lot of little Update's where I will not be building, but where I will be doing thinks what has to do with the built Tomorrow I will be building futher on the ship Cheers Nick
  7. Update Hello everybody It has been a long time ago that i posted a new update/day on my built log of my ship. Recently I have built on my boat, but i hadn't enough time to post it on the forum. So here's day 4, wich 2 days ago for me is It was again a sunny, and warm day. Yet I decided to work inside, because inside it was cooler. So I grabbed my stuff, and started to begin : I begun by placing the bulkheads onto the keel. This has cost me a lot of time, so this is the only thing I have done . The building slip helped me very much by placing the bulkheads straight on the bulkheads , but first I had to put a little piece of wood between the keel and some bulkheads because otherwise they were to low (to place the deck): And so i started to put all the bulkheads onto the keel: With the last one, i couldn't use the helping bit of the building slip, because otherwise i couln't get it away, as you can understand me : Same story at the front And the result: And then the day has past. My uncle has already sawed some blocks really straight for me, so I can put them between the bulkheads. I will show them next time, and let you see what i ment to do
  8. Hi Nick Thanks for your comment. It was very helpfull in my decicion. Because the beginning of the built did go very well without large clamps, i decided to buy the small ones. I now have to wait to reseve them. Cheers, Nick
  9. Update Hello everyone. I forgot that day 3 had already past, and that i hadn't post day 3 on the forum (this because it was a really short day, where i haven't come further than make a gap for the lower dek into the other bulkhead i had to modify). It was a rainy day, so i decided to work for the first time inside. My chamber isn't very big, but I do have a big office in it i can work on. It's large enough The big work, like sanding, I do outisde in the shed where we have stalled the bicycles. Because of that, i can't put down a workbench in it, and work there As i told before, I have only saw a piece of one of the bulkheads to make the lower deck larger: I have worked as precisely as i can, and i think the result is good enough. It's not wonderful, but i think good enogh, because you will not see it when the boat is finisched : And my beautiful boat on the plank above my bed : Yet i descovered that there was a little bow, and I want to make this ship really straight, so i decided to bend it right with a elastic : I hope to get a lot further tomorrow. I hope also that i don't post to many photo's, because i want you to have a good view of how i build my ship Also I need some help of you!! The clamps you see on the last photo holding the elastic are very handy. So i want to buy more. But I don't know what i gonna do. I can do two things: Buy a set of 8 clamps with a clamp range of 10 centrimetre, or buy 4 bigger ones with a range of 30 centrimentres. What should i do???, I can't buy them both, because that's to pricy for me, and i don't need so much! Cheers Nick
  10. That's is a really problem yea. Thanks by the way for letting me know that they don't be called trusses, but bulkheads . I had make mine wrong (the important part), so I had to get the pieces of of each other, and make it over. So i fought because of that, it wouldn't be straight anymore, and i couldn't use it. But luckely, it is very straight I hope you can find a solution for your problem (maybe you can make it new). Tomorrow i will be building again on the ship, and i hope i can post a update (last day's were very busy for me, because of sportday on school, etc.) Cheers, Nick
  11. Update It was a sunny day, so I decided to work again outside. I begun by placing the real keel onto the false keel (what i had started yesterday). Before it, i noticed i little bow in the keel, so i puted the keel between two planks, so it could bow right. on the last photo, you see that it is really right (I think) Right enough I think So after this i could finally put the keel on the building slip (what a difficult task was, because the groove of the building slip was larger than the keel, so i had to put some wood and paper between the keel and the groove. Then i started to cut out all the bulkheads and put them (without glue ofcourse) on the keel: Then i started to change some of the bulkheads (two exactly) I had to do this, because i make the lower deck larger . I'm going to put blocks between the bulkheads. This make the frame more sturdy and the bulkheads are in this way perpendicular.
  12. ZyXuz, you are right. But my working place in my chamber is large enough to work on. The keel is everywhere straight, so don't worry (it was a bit crooked, but i have put it between to straight planks, so it can be bended straight, and now it's really right). Today I'm gonna modify the trusses, and put them on the keel, and maybe I have the time to make the new deck. Cheers, Nick
  13. Hello Everybody The day has come!! I will begin with the built of the hermione la Fayette (or have begun ) As I told before I will post each day I'm working on the boat (will not be every day) a update Comments etc. are very helpfull By the way, I have decided to not paint the boat original colours. This because to replace al the metal parts is very pricy, and I want to see the wood good I hope you will enjoy Update I begun the day by searching, searching, and more searching. This because I want to make the lower dek larger, but i had to know how. I have figured out how (I have to modifed the keel). A few days erlier I have bought a large balk of wood (to make into blocks) and put that between the trusses. I also bought a largeplate plywood to make the lower deck of (in one piece, insted of a lot of pieces). Also i had to figure out what I'm gonna do with the Captain's cabin. Also fot that I have found out what I'm going to do. You will see the changes on the foto's, but next time I will show you on paper which changes I have made After searching, I begun to set up my working area. Most times, I work inside, in my small room (3 metres by 2 metres, with a large bureau, i can easaly work on), but it was a sunny day, so i decided to work outide on the table: First of all, I have numbered the trusses and other laser-cut parts Then ofcourse i begun with cutting out the keel (with my knifes, this goes very fast, and very easely): I have looked, but the keel is almost completely right. On some parts, between the trusses, Its a bit crooked, but I don't mind that (if i put the trusses on, it will be right, because of the blocks i will but between the trusses). I have modifed the keel, as you can see on the next photo's. And I also cut away some at the back of the ship for the captain's cabin: Put on the keel: And putting it onto the false keel was a difficult work (I had to get used on the new clamps): As you can see I have got it finally into the right place But i looked then onto the clock, and saw that it was already 11p.m so i decided to stop, and work futher the next day (today already for me ). So I have come not so far, but I work very neatly and very slowly. Only then you will have a good result
  14. Hello Everybody Today I'm going to a modelling shop, to buy the wood for the things i wanna replace, and some other things. Now I doubt if I wanna paint the boat, with the original colours like the one in Rochfort, or not and leave it in natural woord. What do you think I shall do? Cheers, Nick
  15. Hello Everybody, I have good news!, my tools has arrived. But because I'm very busy, I can't make photos of them. I'm really sorry about that, but I hope I can next week (after my test week on school) show them, en fully begin with my built. Next week I'm also gonna cycle to a local shop 35 kilometres from my house, to buy some other things i hadn't bought, but I also need (because of my changing plan to make some big changes to the ship, for example the Captains Cabin). I let you know soon when i have that, and show the new tools Cheers Nick
  16. Hello Everybody, Thanks for comments. I love to hear such nice comments on my project. Anja asked if i would put some foto's of the Albatros on the site. The Albatros is almost done, but the sails have to be mounted. The only problem is, that I'm terrible in sewing, so I have that deferred By the way, Pajulahti: You have give me a good idea. I think I'm also gonna make a little captain cabin. Tell me what you did, so i can learn from you. I am also make the underdek lager, as you mentioned. Cheers , Nick
  17. I know what you mean. And I have another thing I wanna change, and that's the most difficult part of my built i think. You know there are metal made gunports with the gun's already in them. I found this very ugly, and so i decided to make real cannons , and make a new sort of dek, so that i can replace the false cannons with real cannons, if you cna understand me Also, to talk about with what i wanna finisch my boat, I have decided to use Rustin's Danish Oil. I found a post on a forum of a guy who used that, and the result of his ship with the Oil was wonderful. So i decided to do the same. But because i wanna paint the boat, I only need to use it on the dek I think it's a wonderful idea if we can help each other with the built. I hope I can soon begin with the built. Also, at the end of this they, my new tools will arrive. I will show them as soon as possible And about the stern: I think you are right. I'm going to search about it, and I will also do some other researches. I will let you know. Cheers , Nick
  18. Thanks everyone for comments!!! This gives me a real boost in my work. And thanks for letting me know your interests in my built log. I would need your help. Toch Sokrates: I'm sorry, but there was not such thing you showed on your picture. To M.Pajulahti (en rest to): yes, I have seen the built. I found it very interesting and very nice. It has me set think of my own ship. Because I maybe wanna paint my ship, just like that ship, soms it will be original . But I don't know if i wanna do that, or if that would ruined my ship. What do you al think??, and which paint should I use then? I have seen some builts were they painted the ship, so I know what I supposed to do, but with that I need also help. For the rest of the ship I have to say: I have decided to change a lot, as I mentioned before. I hope I can succeed in this. P.s yes, I'm gonna built the original ship, and I'm very lucky with the less metal parts. I had already mentioned that, and the shop I bought it mentioned also there are sometimes updates of the kits. By the way, I'm gonna make the ugly lion on the front in wood. This is a big challenge for me, but i love some difficulty in my built
  19. Thanks everyone for the comments. I hope I can begin soon. I have next week testweek on school, and as i mentioned i have to wait to reseve the new tools Cheers, Nick
  20. Hi Sokrates When you mentioned if there was a base, i thought there was. But i have looked up, and found there is no base suprisely. So i think i have to make my own base. Luckly for me, and reccomended for you, is that i have bought a Building Slip from billing boats. A foto of it: You need only put it together (a easy work), and then you have a nice base for you ship, and you can also attached the trusses perpendicular, what is essential for a good result. Essential of cource is that you make the building slip itself perpendicular. Cheers, Nick
  21. The Beginning Hello Everybody, My name is Nick. I'm new on this forum, besides I have already gone through it a few times, and thought i may post my own topic about my build log of the Hermione la Fayette from Artesania Latina. I haven't seen a built log before of this ship, so I'm the first i think. But some things about myself: I'm 15 years (almost 16) and do this hobby since a year. I'm coming from the Netherlands, so that may be the reason that my English is not always perfect I love Sailing, and do this a lot (every saturday). I'm doing this almost 5 years. I have also a few certificates achieved, and I'm allowed to sail alone I also love this hobby, and begun last year with the Albatros of Constructo. This has gone very well and the result is pretty good. I'm doing school, and have almost vacation. So i hope within two weeks to really begin with this built. I'm hope i can make a fully build log of this ship. For now, I'm just waiting to reseve some new tools i have bought, with the reason i hadn't got good tools (I have a dremel from my father, and some sanders, but really modelling tools not). I hope to reseve them forthcoming monday or thuesday. I let you know when they arrived, with pictures of couce But enough of me, lets see some pictures of the ship itself: Some pictures of the outisde of the box: As you can see, it is a pretty big ship : And the inside of the box: Much paper work, but i have got trough them already, and know where to start : And a scale foto of the ship: The wood: And the metal parts: As you can see, most of the original wooden parts of a ship are replaced for metal. I found this very ugly, so i decided to remake most of the metal parts into wood again. I hope i can succed in this: An example I'm going to change: And then we have also the laser-cut parts: And at last, but not least, the beautiful sails that are already made for you, so you only need to assemble to the ship : So a lot of picture, and for me a difficult but great new build. I hope I can soon begin with the build itself, and I let you know then.
