Update Hello everyone, first of all, thanks for the comments. I will do my best to make this buildlog good for everyone, with enough but not to much photo's (@philo426, I will and will not recommend this kit. The ship itself is great to build, but the kit itself isn't so good. The wood quality is OK, but there are lots of metal parts. You can make the ship with those metal parts, but I decided that I would replace them) As I said before, my Holiday has started. I started immediately with building On the 15 of february (day 12), I was going to work outside. But because of the strong wind, I decided to work in the barn where we have our bicycles in (I put those outside). I did some work on the balsa blocks in the front of the ship. I did this with a chisel and a file : I did (and do) some experimenting with making gun carriages. This is still in progress By the way, Sjors and Anja send me some files. They worked really great and did help me very much with making the gun carriages. Very much thanks to them!!! Cheers Nick

Short update: Did some more editing on the topic, because I found it still to lonh and too much photo's. In less than 2 weeks I have holiday. I hope it will remain this weather (here in Holland, where it's sunny (and so not raining), but cold), so I can do a little bit outside and maybe finish the structure of the ship before planking. Cheers Nick

Hi guys, Thanks for the fast respons @Demonborger, thanks for the tip. I think I have already found a good matt finish spray, but recommendations about which brand is good are always welcome. @Realworkingsailor, thanks for the explanation. Afterwards, I thought that I could also know it by myself, because of the name DRY BRUSH , But now I know also how to do it. Cheers Nick

Hello everyone, I have a short question for you about the painting (I also asked this on my other topic ''painting and blackening'': You all give me great tips about painting. Some people mentioned something called dry brush. But what is dry brush exactly and how to I dry brush? All tips and tutorials about drybrushing are very welcome Cheers Nick

Hi Guys Thanks for your comments and tips. @Modeler12 Thanks for the forum. I will look at it and see if I can do some more experiments (I have enough cannons to experiment with ) I already tried some things to clean it, and some of this helped, but it gave the cannons never the nice resoult I wanted. The strange thing about those cannons, is that they have a some sort of coppery layer. I think that that prevent it from going black. Then a other thing. I will be experimenting with painting (the metal black spray, but also my boat The Hermione la Fayette), and don't know a lot about it. I already got some great tips, and almost all of them say I have to dry brush. But what is dry brushing, and can some of you give me tips on this Cheers Nick

Hello everyone, Here is a small update to my built of the Hermione la Fayette Update First, the update. As I already said before, I have bought some paint and other stuff. I eventually decided to buy admiralty paint.(with the advice of Sjors and Anja, who has come by at my house ): Green and white have yet to come. I also bought some really good (but expensive) brushes (pencils): With the advice on this forum I decided to buy Metalic black spray from Tamaya. This because the blackening on the amati cannons didn't work: At last, I also bought a new set of files (don't know the englisch word), a set of drills: And now day 11. It was a short day because I had not much time. But I was in a need to buit something, because I hadn´t built for a while (and will not be, until the spring break ). I decided to do some litte work on the crow's nest, I started last time. I work not very fast, and do everything precicely, so my apologize for the few progress I make. I hope to go faster when the may holiday and summer holiday begin, with good weather outside : I also began making the plank helpers wich will be usefull when I will be planking the hull: I hope the time will go fast, and that it will be fast spring break Cheers Nick

Hello everyone, Some little things around my built has taken place. One thing you will notice, is that the built log itself is shorter. I got some advice to make it a little bit shorter, with a few less photo's, so it remains interesting and doesn't become boring. I also bought some things that I have not yet recieved but will receive in a few days. You will see what it is when I got it At last, I have to mention that I do not go on with the plan to place LED lights. I have not much experience with it, and the painting itself is already a big exercise for me. I hope I can soon do some little stuf on the ship. Cheers Nick

Hi Sjors Looks good. I'm interested in wich way you get the bulkheads in place, so they are perpendicular (loodrecht in dutch , don't know if this is the right word in englisch) I'm following your built closely! Cheers Nick

Hi Sjors I was waiting for you to begin with this built. Unfortunatly I was busy with some homework and other things so I hadn't had the time to check it out. Now I have, and I think you made a great start. I have a small question for you (wich others might also answer). You put on the false keel the real keel before placing the bulkheads. Is this usual to do (I did this to), because in the instructions they do it later on (yes I know, the instructions are not always good), or can it also be done later? Cheers Nick By the way, Happy New Year to you and Anja (and everyone else ofcource). The calender has got a nice place above my bed
