I what a topsail!

So refreshing to see a less well known rig on a model! One very seldom sees a latine rig on MSW.
-
Wow, congratulations on this splendid model! Looks great and well photographed too. I think you hit just the right note with the color choices the weathering and "real world" appearance.
-
EXCELLENT model! Colorful and full of life. I would like to see more traditional Mediterranean vessels and rigs.

Дуже приємно модель! Я хотів би, щоб інструменти ви використовуєте. Я будувати кораблі в пляшках також. Ви відвідали http://www.bottledshipbuilder.com/? Вітаємо з хорошої роботи, яку ви робите!

Very nice model! I would like to see the tools you use. I build ships in bottles also. Have you visited http://www.bottledshipbuilder.com/ ? Congratulations on the very good work you are doing!

I deliberately chose to only model the mast and its rigging, not even the channels are really modeled but the lower deadeyes are located properly. The flat topped wooden base is just a crude stool who's length and width scale to Pandora's deck and the width and length of her channels. There is no curvature or camber to the top of the stool but its hight matches the hight of the deck at the Partners, and the Heel of the Main Mast sits in a step the proper depth beneath.

because of its size, the model behaves like it is a collection of parts and not a rigid single object. It "works" as an actual mast would work. When you tug on one part, varius bits of the rigging tighten or loosen, wooden parts shift very slightly until the movement is checked by semi-elastic rigging.
-
All the rigging runs. In fact for a few years I had the course sail set until one day I decided to clew it up. I can't express how much comprehension one gains about sailing ship rigs when one actually has to build and run every bit of rigging.

This scratch built wood model is eight feet tall with its base. Its a representation, as close as I could manage, of every detail of gear and rigging as would be found on the Main Mast of the H.M.S. Pandora. I left off lines that would not belay or dead end on the portion of the hull I was representing, so there is no Main Stay, or any other stay for that matter and the Braces hang in space. I provided the hearts and deadeyes for the Mizzen standing rigging, but not the lines themselves.

Is this a ship model or is it a piece of furniture? I often see perfectly serviceable wooden broom and mop handles in the trash and they would always tempt me to put them to use as spars in a large model. This thought merged with another dream I had of making a window shade in the shape of a sail. Eventually the ideas coalesced into building this large display of the Main Mast of the firgate H.M.S. Pandora. I chose Pandora for the sake that the Anatomy of the SHip Pandora book has some very good comprehensive rigging information, providing not only all the spar details but also all the lengths and diameters of all the standing and running rigging and all the particulars of every block.

Which vessel is this? There is only a code number given under this heading. Is there a build log?
-
I'm interpreting that odd sail as a square with some damaged model rigging, that this is not its proper attitude. It appears to be naked with no other rigging on it, one would expect Lifts at least. Is it possible it is set Flying? it seams too big for that sort of operation on a cutter hull.
-
I love the sails.
-
Nice! Is there a build log for this one?
-
I collected the exact same bottle! Thinking to myself "This one would be PERFECT", and it is.

Nice! I know there is a brig in my future, they always look good. This one looks very classy.
-
Nice! This transitions period between steam and sail is underrepresented in the hobby and there are some great subjects. ALthough I suppose finding decent documentation is a challenge. Also, I wish more people would take the quite easy step of putting a neutral background material behind the model for the sake of photographic clarity.

What a delight. Congratulations on a splendid attractive model!

I feel the yards always look best when braced around like this. It’s more natural.
