Thanks! I added the spanker sail and related working rigging. Still need to adjust the sail a bit. Next up is the front two sails and their related rigging.

I made some good progress this past weekend. I painted and polyed the mast, added the rails and deck structures and prepared most of the blocks. Working with 2mm blocks is a challenge. Slow and steady though. I also added some of the standing rigging to the mast. I will put on the blocks and the rest of the standing rigging as I put on the sails.

Your Vasa is coming along nicely. What are your thoughts on the DeAgostini kits?

I have been working on painting the hull. I chose to use a semi gloss white on top portion and a metallic copper on the lower portion. 3 coats of white and 2 of copper. I added 1 coat of clear poly so far. Getting the white right took some work. Will put on stripes for water line and accent near top to finish the hull. It’s not great but I am satisfied with it now. Next up is the deck work- structures, rails and hardware.

Thanks Yves. You are right. I know there is always a good debate between natural wood color and paint. While it is a personal preference ultimately I believe if you build to “model” an historic ship you need to be true to its look if you want to achieve your objective.

Finished deck planking and made holes for the deck railings and the rigging secured to the deck. Added a stain and two coats of poly. Next up will be smoothing out the hull for painting. After more thought I decided to paint both upper and lower portions of the hull. While the walnut would have looked great the Rainbow did not have a wooden hull but metal. Hopefully it will come out ok.

Thanks all. The J Class is a classic look. I am enjoying the build so far. Working on planking the deck then I have to decide how to finish the hull. When I started the build I planned to paint above the waterline and varnish below. The more I think about this it would not really be a true look at the hull was metal not wood. So I am now thinking of painting the full hull. I am searching for a reference to the colors Rainbow was in back in 1934. I found a painting showing a white hull above the waterline. If you have a good reference please let me know. I am not sure if the new Rainbow was true to the 1934 colors. Patrick, I did look at your Rainbow and it is a beauty. I marvel at how you can work at such a small scale.

I worked on both the boom and the mast shaping the boom, adding the rigging parts and fitting the hinge and pin. The mast is built for gluing 2 sets of 3 sectioned wood, half round dowel and end strip. Lots of sanding and lots of eyelets to add. Total length is 625mm. Cross trees are brass tube. Interesting process. I will paint a bit later on. Back to planking the deck now.

I finished the second planking today. Also added the rudder. Will work on the mast and boom a bit for a break from planking, then back to planking the deck. I am looking for any details on the original colors of the Rainbow when she raced for the Cup in 1934. Looks like the top part of the hull was white. If anyone knows a good source please let me know.

I didn’t take pics of the initial framing. It’s all pretty standard stuff. Here is a current pic of the first planking done. I’ll be starting the second planking next.

I decided to build this as something different than a square rig, schooner or clipper ship. Amati lists this as an easy to build model. The kit looks pretty straight forward. I plan to finish it with a walnut lower hull and painted top hull. This is not how the Rainbow looked when it raced but it’s a nicer look I think. The image on the box cover is how I will go as well.

I finished the Albatros this week. Basically, I added the sails after booking them in tea to give them an aged looked, as suggested in the instructions. I wanted to add the sails to get experience with working with them. While they add some clear definition to the masts and rigging their scale is off and it’s pretty easy to see that. Something for me to learn about going forward. After the sails I just added the canons and small boat to the ship to complete. One thing I did during the rigging was to secure all the working rigging to the belaying pins and rings before attaching them to the sails and their appropriate place on the masts or sails. I found this easier to reach into the small areas on the deck to tie off the lines. I did this first on foremast then attached sails and secured then did the same for you the main mast. You need to be careful to allow enough line length but it worked for me. I was going to add rope coils but for this first build I decided not to. I will put that on the list for the next one.

Had some time over the past two days and made some progress on rigging. I decided to add the sails that came with the kit for practice with sails.

During the weekend I set the two masts in place and rigged the shrouds and did my first ratlines. They didn’t come out great but as my first effort tackling them I am overall pleased. I must say ratlines have been my least favorite project on ge build so far. The rest looks challenging but also fun.

During the past weekend and some of the weekdays I completed the anchors, bowsprit,foremast and mainmast as well as the yards gaffs and boom. Also added the tackle and foot ropes. A busy week. During the weekend I will set the masts onto the ship and begin the rigging. So far working with the OcCre Albatros kit has been straightforward. OcCre provided me with detailed rigging instructions which did not come with the kit. Without them I would have made a mess of things. Any comments on what you have seen so far are appreciated. As this is my first wooden ship build I am learning much.

I worked on the ship last weekend and several days this week and made good progress. The second planking is now done, the superstructure items are all glued on, the rudder is attached and all items have been polyed. I did make a change from the plans using 28 gauge wire to serve as the chain plates instead of using thread as directions indicated. I think it looks better with the wire. This weekend I will finish the anchors and maybe start on the masts. I have found that two natural skills that are really helpful in model shipbuilding are being ambidextrous and having great eyesight. Unfortunately, I am not ambidextrous and have ok eyesight. Oh well. 😩

I made some good progress this week working on deck structures and first planking. My first time planking a ship and it was a good learning experience. Lots of mistakes but with some sanding and wood filler the second planking should go on without much issue. I did reach out to OcCre regarding detailed rigging instructions which were not part of the kit and they came right back to me the next day with full rigging plans via email. That’s good service response time.

I unboxed and started on the Albatros this weekend, actually started a little early on Friday. Managed to get the bulkheads on and set at 90 angle. I also planked several pieces for future use. I received the kit as a present in 2011 and have now taken the leap to get at it. I had not noticed until fully unpacking the kit that there were no written instructions just a 7/8 picture guide. I know they say a picture is worth a thousand words but a little more specifics would be helpful. Does anyone know if OcCre has produced anything in recent years? I don’t see anything on there website that would indicate if they exist. Thanks for any ideas.

Hello all. I recently joined MSW and have been lurking and reviewing various topics and build logs for the past couple of months. I recently retired and decided to get back to modeling. I grew up building plastic model cars and planes then moved to RC planes. I enjoyed building them but not crashing them. Given my experience with plastic models and a desire to learn more about ships and ship building I got back into modeling with Revell’s 1/96 Constitution. It took a bit to finish it and while I enjoyed the build working with the small plastic parts and the limitations of plastic really wet my appetite for wooden ship models. I received the OcCre Albatross as a present back in 2011 and it has been sitting on the shelf since then. I opened the box in June and thought maybe plastic is not so bad. That’s when I found the MSW site. I know you all know this but this forum is fantastic. Great info, lots of sharing and suggestions. Well done to all who keep this going. Using the build as a guide I liked the look of Midwest’s Peterborough Canoe. Too bad Midwest is out of the ship business. I used them for all my RC plane kits and materials. Good company. I found the canoe on eBay and have just finished it. I think I am ready for the Albatross now. Sorry for the long intro. I will plan to start a build log for the Albatross once I get going.
