Pride of Baltimore with Bob Hunt Practicum
Tony Dee replied to Tony Dee's topic in Wood ship model kits
Hi Here is the link. I just started Tony -
Step 3. Hull prep and bearding Template transferred to hull from plans. I was luck they actually gave me two copies of page 1 of the plans so I cut the bearding template right from the plan. My first bearding of the hull. A bit challenging but took my time. I think it looks ok One thing I did notice. Basswod is very chippy. As I was chiseling and cutting it was shredding. I couldn’t get the area perfectly smooth but since it will be covered with planking I am thinking it will be ok. It’s the rabbet that counts so the planking sits flush. Is that right ?

Step 2. Did an initial inventory of the box and organized and marked the sizes of each dowel and strip. I figured it would be easier later on with everything pre marked

Hello all. I am about to embark on the build of the pride of Baltimore II. This will be my first attempt at ship modeling and plan on taking it step by step. I will be using the Bob Hunt practicum and refer to it throughout the build. I chose this ship since my daughter lives in Baltimore and I actually saw it in person and fell in love with it. Wish me luck. I’m going to need it. Sincerely Tony

Hi David i looked through your build log . Great job. I’m just going to take my time and do a little at a time. I’m waiting for a few tools to get delivered before I start. My biggest fear well not fear really is making sure I do a good job with planking since it will be my first thanks for your help Tony -

Hi Yes that is what i have been seeing also. Was trying to confirm since I don't have a lot of experience. Thanks for confirming Tony -
Hello all. I hope everyone is staying safe and healthy during this crazy time. i am planning on starting the Pride of Baltimore using Lauck Street practicums. I received the kit and am reading everything several times before I even attempt starting. One thing that Is interesting is that the plans show the planking widths 1/8” yet the kit ships with planks that are 3/16”. I know that I have to cut each plank to 1/8”. My question is what is the best method for doing this so that I get a good edge that will give me a tight fit during planking? Should I not bother and just plank with the 3/16” provided? Is this normal practice in kits to have to trim the width on each plank? This will be my first build in quite a long time so any recommendations on how best to achieve this would be greatly appreciated. Is it as simple as a straight edge and knife or are there better methods. Thanks in advance Tony

ughhh, sorry @Chuck didn't know. When i spoke to the the sales person they said it was a great place to start. He also talked me into getting the pride of Baltimore which didn't look easy to me either. Guess i will have to take it very slow and methodical and follow along the different builds on here and learn as much as I can before doing anything. Thanks for your help Chuck Tony

Hello I'm very new here and am waiting for my first kit to arrive, the model shipways longboat 1:48. I'm very nervous about the planking step and have looked at numerous resources, videos, documents etc. on the subject. Is there any document or video that actually shows a step by step for lining off the hull and doing the plan that @Chuck refers to? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Tony BTW: The long boat will be my very first attempt at building a model ship.

@sjanicki I've been looking through your build. I will look again to see where you used the bass wood. I actually ended up calling Blue Jacket and ordered a new hull because mine is a mess lol. I will use this one to experiment and learn Thanks for your help with this

Thanks all! I actually started to use bondo and got the bow in decent shape but then realized the middle was too far gone. I'm chalking this up to a learning experience and to use the plans as a guide. I ended up ordering a replacement hull. With this said, i'm going to use this hull as a practice piece to try some of your suggestions and learn. Not all a loss. I wasn't expecting perfection my first time out but this was a rather quick failure coming out of the shoot lol Thanks again

Hello all from Virginia Hope everyone is staying healthy and safe. I just wanted to introduce myself. I am extremely green and getting started with trying out the build for the Blue Jacket Revenue Cutter. I already screwed the hull shaping up and am going to have to call them to see if i could just order a new hull since i really messed the first one up. I'm hoping they will be able to send me a new one. I don't want to get discouraged and am going to take it very slowly. One build at a time. Starting with beginner model and hoping to advance over time. I love working with my hands and am eventually looking for something to keep me busy in future retirement and to pass down. Thanks for taking the time to read this. Stop by and say hello Have a great day Tony

Hey all. I’m extremely new to this project and figured I’d start with the revenue cutter by blue jacket since it got great reviews here. I misunderstood the instructions when shaping the bow and really messed up to the point where I took too much wood off. I don’t want to get discouraged by this and don’t know how to fix it. Do you think I could just order the hull and try again? Thanks for your assistance Tony
