  1. Thanks Barkeater! I am taking advantage of being home over the holidays to keep working. Below is the hull and cabin/cockpit assembly painted with primer. I've already sanded most of that paint off and filled in a few dips and dents. After another coat of primer, I'll start working on installing the deck. I purchased air brushes and an air brush station for my model trains. Those tools work very well on boat models as well. I am using the Aztek airbrush from Testors. It is much easier to work with and control than traditional airbrushes.
  2. Bill T - Thank you sir! I will find your build blog. I am still shaping the hull. It's coming along nicely. I will likely put a coat of primer on it this weekend to find the problem areas. While some of the contour putting was drying, I took time to fabricate the cockpit and main hatch. I use magnets on a metal gluing pan to make sure my corners are square. I filled in all of the tabs with a little contour putty and sanded them flat for painting.
  3. Whoa, whoa, whoa, Mike, what are you doing? Well, I didn't like how the hull was shaping up. I even went out to look at my sailboat, which has a full keel. I was also a little too aggressive with the sanding. No problem, I used two types of modeling putty, Testors Contour Putty, and Squadron Products Green Putty to fill in the low spots I created. My favorite (from my train modeling and first boat kit) is the Green Putty. It dries relatively fast, adheres well, and sands very easily. Unfortunately, it's solvent based and you'll need to use it in a well ventilated area. I've used both products on the hull and will report back on how each works. I know, I know, it doesn't look like I know what I'm doing. It will all come together in the end.....I hope.
  4. Thank you everyone. I have started a build log. I am building the Yankee Hero 1889 Quoddy Boat kit from BlueJacket. Please visit my build and share your thoughts. - Mike
  5. I've started my second BlueJacket Ship Crafters' ship model, the 1889 Quoddy Boat, "Yankee Hero." I hope this blog will keep me engaged and moving forward on the kit. I've started to shape and fair the hull. I've already taken too much off in a few places near the stem. I'll fill those in after I like the rest of the hull.
  6. Hello fellow modelers! I am Mike and I live in New Jersey. My first hobby is HO trains. I also own and sail a 25' Cape Dory. On a trip to Searsport, Maine, I stopped at BlueJacket Ship Crafters and I was hooked. I purchased and built the Maine lobster boat "Red Baron." I am now on my second kit, the 1889 Quoddy Boat "Yankee Hero." I've already learned much from the posts on this site and hope I live up to the craftsmanship on display here.
