She's coming along beautify. The carvings will certainly be interesting.
I do love the darker colour above the wales. Good work.

Have started fixing bolts to the hull. Initial bolts represent the gun rigging eyelets from the inside of the hull. These are plastic bolt heads used in model train building and come in all sorts of sizes and types, again found these while building my modern ships. Also playing around some of the brass fittings from the sergal kit - what is suitable and what should be replaced. Some of the carved filigree carvings that would need to be replaced is so small I think I'll have to sculpt rather than carve to keep them fine enough. I wish these were painted on like the later vessels of the 17th century! I'd find that much easier to do.

The start of a very long process of carving....

Before I got too carried away, thought I should finish the lower hull. Still yet to decide completely whether to display her as a diorama or full hull..

The transom still requires a sand before painting. I've also started to cut away at the side of the transom for the footing of the carving that will be fixed to the arch of the transom.

Julie, You are the hero. Without your hands to hold those tools to sand, shape, cut and glue, Then those tools would be just.... Well tools:) Give yourself a pat on the back for a superb job. It looks great.

Well done. I do like the look of the hull, looks real neatly constructed. How have you been using the planner on the con caved curves by the keel?

Hi Anton,  Looking very nice, and those scarf joints add a touch of class which lifts it above just an ok planked hull, well done.

Starboard upper hull planking complete. I haven't simulated caulking above the upper gun deck as this planking will be painted black as the backdrop for the carvings. I'll complete the port upper hull first before sanding and tree nailing the planks - I'll use the pin hole and filler technique for this and have to source correct size nail heads to represent the iron bolts. The gun ports will need final cleanup of the second planking and a final sanding of the lining to the correct thickness. Once both upper hull sides are complete I'll turn her over and begin the lower hull. This will be painted white and not left natural wood as I prefer the model to replicate the actual vessel.

What an amazing job you have done. Just been looking through your whole log to date and it's very impressive. I have the Bismarck at 1:200 scale card. And lots of this PE to go on it too. But that's awhile off yet. I think I will just keep watching your build for awhile. Keep up the good work.

Wow 1/45th! That going to be a monster. You almost have to erect scaffolding to work on her. Looks like you are doing a great job. Looks awesome.

Flew in last night for my week rnr and came home to a lovely present from my girlfriend! It's a framed colour print of a cutout of the Dutch passenger ship Willem Ruys, and it's an original from 1947!

This is the ship that took my father and his family from the then Dutch East Indies back to holland in 1950. It was also a ship my father worked on as a signals officer in 1957-58! This ship would then become the Achille Lauro for Lauro line and was the first ship I sailed on a voyage in 1987 haha so this ship means a great deal to me. I do have the plans for her in the hope of building her one day.

Have done a little more second planking today. I do like this colour of the planks. I will have to adjust that upper most wale forward as it sits just a tad too high, but this isn't an issue.

And a little more  the next plank will actually be a profile section wale.

First upper wale which is profiled. This is a brass profile strip supplied by sergal and is perfect even though it's not wood it measures up nicely so I'm happy to use it.

Nylon looks good to me but, I'm thinking about how well glue will soak into the line. It soaks in real well with cotton but I'm not too sure about this.
(White glue im meaning, Not CA)

I have just stumbled upon this log. This is something very new and different.  Your doing a great job.
I don't know about using balsa for the planking but, Prehaps some thin walnut strips? Something with not much grain showing.
Also I'm not sure how glue would adhear to the clay. Unless you use CA?I've honestly never attempted to do this. All the best and glad you returned.

Cheers.  Sounds like walnut will be best. The glue, I was just wondering if you are sticking Wood strips to the clay model itself. Not too sure how Wood glue would stick too well to clay. Or you might have to use super glue.
