Good evening Dave , just to add another possibility for you to look at is Ropes of Scale , which I've read mention of by at least 2 other members here , and while I only did a fast surf on their web site - it looked interesting enough to bookmark it for future shopping possibilities ? as it's a Canadian company I may be a little bit biased ? as I'm also a Canuck 😉

Suggested sites for purchasing wood model ship kits
AlleyCat replied to Capella's topic in Wood ship model kits
Hi Allan . Thank you for the wisdom , the site gave a very "quality" impression at first look , but I am not even in the same Wheel - house as the person who has the skills and experience to know the differences and requirements for Historical accuracy ( that would be you 🙂 ) / I'm more like the dock boy - here kid hold this line - lol 😉 and I have been "window shopping " at both Syren and Vanguard , but have resolved to complete my work on Bluenose ll before I commit to the next boat . And I can tell you I've seen about 4 to 6 other boats here on MSW that my mind has told me " do that one next ! " 😉 Best regards , Rick . -

@Capella , like you I am working on my first boat but am not as far ahead as you are . I have been thinking about " what next ?" also and the other day I stumbled across a site called the Model Shipyard ( https://www.stephensandkenau.com ) and from every thing I was able to read about them on their website they are - Very - (underline that ) particular about the Historical accuracy of the Models they will either build for you or the kit-s- that they sell . They're located in South Africa and I'll bet a Cat-Treat that some of the very wise gentlemen here will have either heard of them ? or know someone who has bought something from them ? and I too would be interested to hear their views or recommendations about them 🙂 . I watched the movie Master and Commander the other night again for fun , which triggered the "search the internet" for a Model of the HMS Surprise and found one there . I did not go as far as to "register to see the pricing" on the kits , but instinct tells me that anyone who does - should probably be sitting down when they click on the show me tab !! Finally a quick thank - you to Peter 6172 for mentioning the Canadian company Ropes of Scale , which I've bookmarked for future shopping when I know ( a lot more ) about what I'm doing and what should be done . Cheers . Funny quip from some You Tube Yoda : Measure once - Cuss twice 😉😉 -
Welcome to you and greetings from Canada 🙂 I've just re-started working on my Bluenose ll which was made by - your ? - company years back . ( I had heard or read ? somewheres a while back that the company closed ? , has it re-opened ? ) Any news you can share would be appreciated / Thank you 🙂

Welcome Slugger , I only got tied up here 2 weeks back and have found the community here to be pretty wonderful ! The vast depth of knowledge of the old-timers here is a bit mind boggling , but you'll discover that for your self 🙂 I also am on my first boat too . Sea you around 😉

Looking for a good "starter" pin vise set
AlleyCat replied to Capella's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
Thank you gentlemen , for your valued and advice and experience it is much appreciated . I stumbled across this topic and started reading the posts due to the pin vice I bought from a local supplier here in Montreal "slips" meaning the drill bits will slip out of the chuck rather frequently unless I really crank it down tight ! I believe its an Amati ? and maybe it just needs to get worn in more on the jaws perhaps ? I'm not loosing sleep over it as I only paid 9.00 Canadian for it - cheap in comparison to some of the renovations tools i have bought over the years ! . I've seen the Starrett ones on Amazon and the Moody's also ( which look solid and more reasonably priced ) and the Moody's are a possible up grade ? also though is the set by C.M.L. which was shown further back up the thread by Capella ( love your Cat photo ) and I'll be looking into them soon . For a long time now I've practised the "Buy once - Cry once " methodology of acquiring new tools etc and it does seem to still work rather well ( I still have a 4 foot carpenters level from Starrett that I bought over 20 years ago ? and it still reads True - today ) but I do "baby" my more prized tools than most in Reno's seem to do 🙂 Thanks to all again . Rick . Current Build : Bluenose 2 by A.L. On the shelf : Dust Pro tip : One can hide a lot of Sin with Paint 😉 -

Hello Dave_E and Patrick ( Baker ) and Tomasz B / thank you all very much 🙂 Dave , I've noticed an article or 2 from you that are on my mental reading list , which I hope to remember what they are come the weekend , lol 😉 And Tomasz , i stumbled across the Tally Ho restoration build early in the Pandemic and power watched my way through the whole series of shows ! 138 ? episodes at this time and I can tell you I don't miss a one of them when Leo posts a new one . the same thing happened to me with the Channel - Acorn to Arabella - a sailboat built from scratch ! Steve and friend Alex even cut down and milled their own trees ! / I'll tell you -- if I could turn back the clock 40 years I would jump at the chance to become a Shipwright ! 🙂 knowing what I know now about it , of course , and these guys are so amazing to watch because there is hardly nobody building wooden boats anymore ( mostly plastic ) Oh and another favourite is the channel Salt and Tar Garette and Ruthie built their wooden boat from scratch also - 5 ? almost 6 years long build , they expect to set sail in August this year -- finally - 🙂 -

Hello everyone , and thank you to the Admin for letting me tie up here for a while . I initially thought I would just skulk around the place in Cat like fashion and gleen the info that I needed to finish a boat build that I started a long time ago , 18? years back maybe and put on top of a bookshelf to collect dust 😉 . Getting here has come about through You Tube ! and the pandemic believe it or not . 2 years back I started watching a - lot- of You Tube and stumbled across 2 channels where the guys were building and restoring wooden Sailboats , The Tally - Ho project and Acorn to Arabella ( both Crews are doing amazing builds ! ). Which led to Y.T. recommending modelling channels of wooden ship models , which re kindled my thoughts and interest in finally trying to finish the Bluenose 2 model that I started so long ago . A few of those You Tube channels had ( links ? or mentioned this site ? ) and I found myself beginning to explore your community , and wow ! I had no idea the depth and expanse of this hobby to say the least ! . I've been reading some of the posts on things that catch my eye in the topics titles , and some of the "Old timers" here have more knowledge than google its self ( Holy smokes ) , one old-timer cautioned another novice that he was at the entry point of the rabbit hole and to proceed with caution before entering and I clearly see why -- there's a whole galaxy of possibilities ahead me ( us ) . So 4 or 5 weeks back i got the boat down and dusted it off and started to continue the build , and am making good progress . I've got 25 or so years of Home Renovations experience and tools behind me and some skilz too 😉 and can say I've built some structures to get my jobs done that would make an OSHA or RBQ inspectors hair stand on end , but they held up and I lived ! . So the plan going forward is to finish that boat come heck or high water and when it's done maybe even post a picture of it here ? My street name is Rick Brady , and I'll be seeing you around 🙂 Even though I possess very few tid-bits of wisdom , I'll share the most relevant one : " You can hide a lot of Sin with Paint " 😉

I was wondering if you can help me.
The rigging knots for main gaff blocks going to the mast. I'm a relative beginner and can't find anything on the rigging of these. Can you help or do you have someone to recommend?
Thanks

The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
