  1. Great idea! My toothpicks will have to do until the next spending spree. Glycerin and distilled water is what I use. I'd rather buy better paint as ship modeling goes along. When I do not know until the differences are experienced, inexpensive suits. Once the results of a really good are seen, I'll pay the price. A wet pallet is a must. Make your own or buy a good one, do it. I bought the best I could buy. It has a center tray over the wet pallet that holds paint. First did not use it. Now it is used on long painting days. Not only does it keep the paint wet longer, the center tray is like an artist paillet.
  2. Well, I am a long way from building the Soleil Royal, and is a century before the era of my interest. That being said, I look forward to expanding my knowledge. Reading has become the number one use of my time. Then while gluing and painting these pages are mulled over. This is a rich hobby with a wealth of books. Rather be broke with a new vision then unaware of what is out there.
  3. I've seen on YouTube that Citadel paint better for hand painting. Image this is very subjective. Why would Citadel be better when painting by hand? Right now Tamiya acrylic paint is my choice. Beginners luck, right. If Citadel paint is better for hand painting and I start buying it, can both brands be used on one model? Hate to have the Tamiya paints go to waste.
  4. Forged Acrylics Styrene Sheets .015", 12x12 Inch, White 4-Pack works?
  5. I see the use of super glue and thin plastic to fill gaps in seams on a plastic model. 1) If the gap small enough, can you skip the filler? 2) Where do you find the thin sheets of plastic?
  6. Plank-On-Frame Models and Scale Masting and Rigging by Harold a. Underhill found for free on Scribd. The rest have to wait. Looks like beans and biscuits for a few months before another spree like this.
  7. I know about the shipping across the ocean. Hismodel bundled all the CSS Alabama accessories together in one order and still shipping was hefty. He added in some extras to lessen the hurt. Is Hismodel a wholesaler, or, does he manufacture also?
  8. Masting and Rigging: The Clipper Ship and Ocean Carrier by Harold Underhill have. Scale Journey: A Scratchbuilder's Evolutionary Development, by Antonio Mendez on wish list Triftbooks Plank-On-Frame Models and Scale Masting and Rigging, Vol. 1 on wish list Triftbooks The Techniques of Ship Modeling by Gerald Wingrove bought $10.25 (including shipping) on Thriftbooks The Art of Ship modeling by Bernard Frolich bought $67.74 (including shipping) on Amazon Ship Modeler's Shop Notes, Volumes 1 and 2 from the NRG $81.35 (including shipping) I've been sleeping on Ship Modeler's Shop Notes, Volumes 1 and 2. Your recommendation put me over. The other two books were a good deal. Masting and Rigging: The Clipper Ship and Ocean Carrier i am struggling through. Lots to take in at bedtime. Never met a hobby book I did not need, right?
  9. Just decided not to weather the ship hull. Several thoughts brought me here. The copper hull looks great after painting it. A lot of firsts for me have been taken on with this build. Too many ways to simulate weathering the hull to choose from. In the end I decided to weather the next build, USS Constitution.
  10. Already have one, thanks.
  11. No problem with the CP. I consider myself normal, and you all walk a little funny.
  12. HiSmodel is where the accessories for the CSS Alabama were bought. Starting to save for the next model, USS constitution. He can buy a used car for what the Aurora Heller accessories will cost. Great history YouTube! Thanks
  13. Good to hear about the files. I have a habit to pursue a hobby when started. I started out bookbinding in the late eighties. Ended selling when COVID closed the farmers market closed. During that time woodcarving ten years were spent. Only quit that when the cerebral palsy made my hand cramp too much. In for the long run with model ship building. Too ambitious, no. The models are selected in degrees of learning curve. Driven, yes. Reading history for a hobby leads to one book another! Seeing a jumble of parts become a work of art thrills me! Craftsmanship will keep me young. My downfall is buying books and tools. You can not create well with a poor tool and little knowledge.
  14. Thanks Do you know anything about the "prestige series"? I am amazed at quality of material.
  15. I would like to build this ship in time. Wood or plastic, kit or scratch: it would be a nice addition to my beginning collection. The Discovery Expedition of 1901–1904 fascinated since a mere child.
  16. Money being dear enough to almost make me go back to work, I chose this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N53K853/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1 Not knowing what shape would work best for what job. I took the shotgun effect on shapes.
  17. Acquired Soliel Royal Aurora Heller no. 6550 1/100 scale through Facebook a couple months ago. A YouTube video about Heller history never mentioned Aurora. Can anyone give me a history of Aurora Heller model company?
  18. Orel’s kits looks like a few I would like to build. The idea of paper models is new to me.
  19. Found Historic Ship Models by zu Mondfeld on Scribd. Saved it, thanks. Scribd is well worth the yearly fee. Ship Modeler's Shop notes will have to wait until more money comes my way. I like the era where sail passes to steam power. Right now plastic models I like and Model Shipways Shipwright 3 Kit Combo Series are a start. When my skills are up, a scratch build of a Three island Tramp Steamer. Who knows what Ebay will bring in the years to come
  20. What does "HHS" stand for? jeweler's files
