replacing plastic mast and spars
Frank Burroughs replied to Frank Burroughs's topic in Plastic model kits
alrightythen, I have a few questions before investing. What saw will work for cross grain work? How does a cork borer work? Which one would be suitable? What diameter brass wire for jackstays? So, I am buying hard maple for mast and birch for spars. How thick should the sheets for each be? where should the wood be bought? -

10 Pc Dipped Handle Diamond Riffler File Set, 220 grit left over from my carving days. Could be 150 grit. Will this do as warding files? -

replacing plastic mast and spars

brass wire is used for jackstays => clever Do you paint the brass wire to blend in? bamboo kitchen skewers and bamboo toothpicks for small masts and spars => very useful I am wondering what kinds wood to buy for the main and foremast. Same with the larger spares. Trying not to buy power tools till the next model. Right now a dremel variable speed and a drill press are it. Read that it can be vertical or horizonal. Using the idea of a grooved board and sandpaper -

Thanks for the 1980 document. Brass has strength over wood. Looking into it this was found: "no lathe is needed: just make a shallow V-groove in a piece of wood, chuck up the wire into your mini-drill and work away on the way with a sanding stick with, say, 600 grit 'wet-n-dry' paper. Not even a mini-drill is needed, you can just hold the wire between your fingers, turn it by, say, 30° and count the number of strokes with the sanding stick to achieve roundness." wefalck Posted November 25, 2021 Sounds about right for a beginner . The model I am working on is Revell 1961 CSS Alabama 1/96 scale. -
Making a mast (or spars) from square stock By Elia Gianopulos and ed. by NRG Staff Is this a good start for replacing plastic mast and spars?
-
Rethought putting in wooden dowels for the plastic mast and spars. After spending money for after-market parts it seems like the thing to do.
-
Stated work on the model yesterday. Working on a 1/96 scale model is better for my hands. Decided to buy as many after-market upgrades as possible. No sense in making money and not spending whats left over needs. Wants come next, right! Weathering videos have conflicting choices. The kit instruction has me using turpentine. Any rule of thumb when using acrylic model paint washes to simulate rust, salt and other weathering? I need to do the best job possible with what I have. Not going to make this model historically accurate by cutting new gun ports and what not. Wooden mast and spars are for the next model. So is making my own rope and sails. One step at a time

Upgrade Kits CSS Alabama model kit revell 1/96 Being this is my second model, a accurate model is not as important as learning. However if one or two might add greatly to the model. Revell CSS Alabama 1:96 - set of 434pcs CNC walnut blocks and Clamp of Deadeyes Revell CSS Alabama 1:96 - set of brass guns for kit Revell CSS Alabama 1:96 - set 60x wooden blocks, hooks, eyelets, ropes for guns Revell CSS Alabama 1:96 - set of 11 pcs profesional ropes and chains Any worth the money?

Funny you should ask. I am finishing the rigging this week. Primed the CSS Alabama for painting. Had to take a few months off to pay off my credit cards. God, I missed working with my hands! Picked up Aurora Heller "Soleil Royal", 1/100, as my fifth model

Size of a printer needed
Frank Burroughs replied to Frank Burroughs's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
never thought of that -
A new printer needed. I assume a regular 11" by 8.5" page, color, printer would do. When I start printing out the 1/96 scale plans for scratch builds they can be taken to a print shop. Correct assumption?

CSS ALABAMA: ANATOMY OF A CONFEDERATE RAIDER By Andrew Bowcock is way above the budget for this model. If I remake this ship in wood, I'll spring for it. CMS Alabama: Builder, Captain, and Plans by Charles Grayson Summersell and Wolf of the Deep: Raphael Semmes and the Notorious Confederate Raider CSS Alabama by Stephen Fox are my purchases for this go around. Are you going to replace the plastic mast and yards with wood? I will probably not because this kit off Ebay is a mess. It is going to be raffled off when finished.

Are your rigging instructions separate than your assemble instructions? I am looking for rigging instructions.

What parts to prime on revell 1961 kit

I finally downloaded assemble instructions. The chrome parts are not included. The look like engine covers from a car model. Problem: rigging instructions are not included. This is going to be interesting. The search begins! -
What parts to prime on revell 1961 kit
Frank Burroughs replied to Frank Burroughs's topic in Plastic model kits
I am wondering if the chrome parts are from another kit. Don't think 1800 ships had them, lol. -
The CSS Alabama has the hull already copper-ed. There are chrome parts. The blocks are tiny! I am using Tamiya acrylic paint. My gut says primer all but the chrome. Then I read about taking the chrome off and painting the parts silver. So, I ask, what would you prime?

The CSS Alabama, Revell 1/96 scale, has arrived from Ebay today. It is the 1961 kit. A quarter of the parts are off the sprue. I am defiantly raffling this completed model off at the local weed shop! Still, for what was paid, I am happy.

In this video he say the CSS Alabama length is correct. Revell's Kearsarge was released first . 2:38 in the video.
