I am only rigging the Charles W. Morgan plastic model kit now. I am doing the Cutty Sark and USS Constitution 1/96 models this Winter. Rigging has butterflies in my stomach! How do you tie those little knots? How do you keep the mast from bending? And so on. I have mild cerebral palsy. My hands work well most times. are these tools a good investment for both plastic and wood kits of sail and early steam ships? What books teach you the simple how to rig and what books show you what rigging looks like?

thanks for your info! It is 1/125 scale. I am putting prime on now. The Gouda was built around 1636. " She was constructed when Dutch shipbuilding was the model for its naval rivals, a model lasting 200 years. This Man-O-War was a two-decker, the preferred Dutch construction type, because it gave their ships more speed and maneuverability. Her lighter construction, however, had a drawback when it came to withstanding close in fire. (The French and English preferred sturdier three deck ships for this reason.) Like all Dutch Man-O-Wars, the Gouda had a red lion figure head and lanterns along her sides and decks. This was different from English and French ship construction which were always covered with elaborate ornamentation." - unknown

My hands are getting steadier. Lots to learn about painting. This model I am using Tamiya acrylic . The two Men O' War models acrylic craft paint will be tried. Excited to compare the results. Soon rigging will start. Going to have to learn how to tie tiny knots.

Charles W. Morgan Whaling Bark Kit
Frank Burroughs replied to Frank Burroughs's topic in Plastic model kits
On old, worn molds, why do the parts come out rubbery? -
I am within striking distance of finishing my first model. I used Tamiya acrylic paint on it. How should I seal it? I am not using an air brush.

I am going to build two Men 'O Wars after the whaler model. For my fourth model I am looking at the 1/96 scale Cutty Sark or the 1/96 scale USS Constitution. Buying the Revell Cutty Sark 05422 pre-owned from France. Really good deal on that ship and a 1901 research ship. It is worth the shipping! I am looking for the USS Constitution also. on the USS Constitution i see the Revell | No. 85-0398 | 1:96 scale 2014 model has new parts. It is hard to find, new or pre-owned. Is it the best model kit of this ship at that scale? I know this is subjective. But, some molds are better than others. Cutty Sark or USS Constitution, which would you build first?

Charles W. Morgan Whaling Bark Kit
Frank Burroughs replied to Frank Burroughs's topic in Plastic model kits
I had one missing part. A minor piece that won't be missed. And the skylight was broken. Still, as a first model kit, it was worth the money. why are the older molds better? -
The model is coming along. Painting is a challenge with my hands shaking because of Cerebral Palsy. Next model I will use tape before painting.

I painted on the spruce and assembled parts, then painted. Both have there uses. My question now is about sanding. How often do you sand? I'm looking into making some sanding sticks at the moment.

Having much fun learning the hobby! Primed the model with Tamiya Light Grey Surface Primer. It went on well. The small can just put two coats on both sides. Will look into automotive fine primer for the next ship. Tamiya acrylic paint used to paint the model. Glycerin Oil used for a paint retarder. One part oil to nine parts water. I mixed 50/50 on retarder and paint. How often should sand the model?

1) spray paint parts on the sprue 2) scrape parts where they are to be glued and glue 3) putty gaps and seems 4) sand 5) paint Is this the order of things?
-
The plastic kit is H-330 1972 New box, bought off of Ebay. I washed it with Dawn dish soap and rinsed it in warm water. Debating on whether to glue the some part together before spraying Surface Primer L Gray, or, spray on the spruce first.

Thanks for the replies. The model kit has been around since 1972 and is opened. Who knows how many times the parts have been handled.

When a kit is received should the parts be washed in dish soap? I want to remove any dirt or oils before applying primer.

Well, I went ahead and bought it. -
Charles W. Morgan Whaling Bark Kit Just starting back after 45 years away. Thought I'd buy a used Charles W. Morgan Whaling Bark Kit to start with. Any thoughts on buying used kits of the Revell | No. H-330 | 1:110?
