  1. Finally made some more progress on Terror! I finished the second layer of the hull and decided to glue extra wood to the inside of the railing for looks: Had a delightful time putitng together more of the pieces that go on deck. Proceeded with the windows and tried out some paining as I went along I struggled on deciding if/how to paint her but ended up settling on black. Unfortunately that made some of the gaps in the wood stand out so I added some filler and repainted her. Rudder time! I unfortunatly struggled with the metal sheets on the bow. Both the pattern and cutting/aligning them was really hard so I am not super happy, especially since i got a lot of dents and scratches on there as I went along. Next I will do these pieces, but I have not been able to consistently bend them in the same way. Right now I am using pliers... Stocked up on some extra wire though so I can get silly with it and hopefully get them to look better than the bow.
  2. I started building my Terror recently, but have not gotten around to posting here. So, in honour of Jfj's mandible identification, I am finally sitting down to write this. As of now, I am working on doing the second wood layer on the hull, which has been really fun. There is some general wonky-ness going on, but for my first time working with anything wooden ever, I think she looks ok. I think I should have sanded down the precut pieces that the hull strips got glued onto a bit more, because the second to last once specifically is a bit bumpy. After a first sanding, she looked like this: While i was waiting for the glue to dry, I had sarted building some other pieces. I am not quite happy with my first attempt of those crane-ish structures, the acrving on top looks a bit rough, so I shall try again later. Ignoring the instructions, i built on the ring part onto the hull firtst before adding the second layer of wood, because i was afraid of damaging it when sanding the ring. It worked fine. I have now finished one side entirely and moved onto the other today. I have also begun thinking about paint, but since Uni is about to pick up again that might have to wait until Christmas break.
  3. This seems to be an older post but I would still like to say thanks for such a thorough review and break down of the kit! I cannot wait to get my hands on this 🥺
  4. Hello MSW, My name is Lohengrin, I am a 21-year-old university student from Germany and completely new to the wonderous world of model ship building! Through one of my classes, I got introduced to the Franklin Expedition and since my father suggested I build the HMS Terror, I have been hooked on the idea. I have been starring lovingly at the product page, contemplating this purchase, but since I do not have any experience in model kit building, I can't gauge whether I am massively overestimating my own skill and patience. While I would call myself a good artist and skilled crafter, building a ship seems to be on an entirely different level of difficult. Starting with a smaller build would probably be a smarter approach, but since my interest lies in this one specific ship only for now, I can't seem to make myself dedicate much energy into anything else. (Insert joke about the hubris of getting stuck looking for the North West Passage and me believing I can build that same ship. How hard could it be?) Jokes aside, reading everyone’s posts has been a blast. This is truly a gold mine of resources and seeing everyone's dedication and willingness to help is amazing! I feel much more confident tackling this challenge with this wonderful community at my disposal :3 We shall see how it goes, i suppose. Thanks so much for having me!
