  1. Welcome to my first build log! I consider this my first full build because I did once finish a model of the Chesapeake Bay Flattie (also by Midwest) that my brother had started. So this is my first time building a model start to finish. I bought this kit a few years ago, getting as far as a first coat of paint on the hull, and I just pulled it out of the closet again a few days ago. As you can see, I'm in the painting stage, which has been a humbling experience. The part I'm most pleased with so far is painting a decent water line. It took a few tries, but what finally worked for me was painting over the thin strip of yellow tape with more white paint before painting the darker colors. The part I've been most frustrated by are the crooked plank lines on the deck. I've had to tell the little perfectionist voice in my head quite a few times to settle down, explaining to him that this is my first time doing this and it doesn't need to look like it was made by someone with decades of experience. Here are some specifics: Paints: enamel model paint, from Testor Colors (all flat sheen): water line - white lower hull - dark red (red mixed with black) upper hull - black deck - tan display cradle - gray (sanded for weathering) Next steps: touch up paint on hull paint trim, toe rail, hatches, hatch covers, etc. finish the display stand.
  2. Hello MSW! I'm thrilled to have found this forum and am excited to connect with fellow modelers. My name is Josh, and I'm originally from Maryland, though now I live in Arizona, near Phoenix. That may be partly why I'm drawn to model ships, as they remind me of family day trips to the Chesapeake Bay, walking around Baltimore's inner harbor, or visiting the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis. While I've spent very little time on actual boats, I love reading about naval history, especially some of the great fiction series, such as Hornblower by Forester, Master and Commander by O'Brian, and Ramage by Pope. So although I'm just a beginning modeler, I hope to try my hand one day at some of the classic sailing warships. For now, I'm in the middle of my first full build (the Sharpie Schooner by Midwest) and will go ahead and start a build log, welcoming any and all suggestions. I've already benefited from scanning through some other people's Sharpie builds, so I'm excited to learn more and improve. I'm not sure how often I'll be able to post, as I currently work full time, still have young kids at home, and am one year into a doctoral program. But when I do find a few minutes to work on the model, I find it to be a welcome break. Hope to connect with you in the chats!
