Added grating in the cockpit, a yacht-style companionway boards closure, and a seat (shellac). Used the cardstock method for rudder pintles/gudgeons. Amber shellac on the spars to imitate spar varnish.

The last one, Plate LXXXIV, is from C.P. Kunhardt’s Small Yachts, 1885. This looks like the plan forming the basis of the Midwest kit plans. I directly copied the centerboard details from it. Found on this helpful substack from a full-scale builder, Duncan Blair. https://traditionalsailbluewing.substack.com/p/part-two-the-boat

Thanks! I owe a lot to others’ build logs from here such as mark.bukovich and EricWilliamMarshall and VTHokiEE, borrowed a lot of ideas and methods. Also some great leads for reference materials here for details.

Decided to make mast hoops instead of using the wire from the kit. Also added details to the centerboard.

Almost got the transom on straight. Followed the instructions advice to use medium CA and while it speeds up the build nicely, it kills me not to be able to fix mistakes. Cabin sides are not straight either. And I used the wrong strips (too big) for the chafing planks alongside the keel.

My daughters got me the kit for Father’s Day, and like most projects I immediately set out to over-engineer it. First wood (ship) kit, made a few mistakes along the way. I am at sails and rigging now but posting the backlog of build photos. Dan

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
