  1. Well I think I only found a model of the victory tug today but that works for me very inspired by this tug creosote and that may be the colors I’m lookin for. What a wonderful day doing “research”
  2. Sanded off most of the blemishing and gummy varnish that I created and found a spray spar varnish that I will be trying instead as I’ve seen it will be more forgiving. After three lighter coats I am liking the evenness and think after a few more done like this with a sanding in between it will hopefully polish up nicely in the end. since this is in the finishing stages I started my next build and the log is already began
  3. Ahoy it is time for me to begin my next build this will be my first tugboat. I picked one that was originally build here in Seattle that are still around for me to go see. The lord Nelson victory tug 37’ by dumas that I was finally able to get on sale. This project is for my wife so she has something to play with as well so I will make her do some of the work too. sofar the unboxing and labeling of pieces the cut pieces are a bit rough and includes some wood and plastic? Which I may end up cutting out of some ply but I will make that decision once I get there. today I start with the stand and labeling tomorrow I will actually be able to see one close up at Olympia harbor days as I’ve been told one showed
  4. Started varnish today and in my rush to stack up some layers I forgot to change out roller and tray and I made a crackly mess. guess I’ll let it dry properly and sand it out and start it back up again. Gotta remember to be patient
  5. Onto the final push and I finally broke down and got a sander and it is way better than doing it by hand. Just put on two layers of epoxy letting the first layer get slightly dry then adding another as I saw t done like that on a finishing video I watched. I’ll be knocking this back smooth and if I like it I will go ahead and start with layers of varnish. If not another layer of epoxy. Decided no paint and to just finish this up how it is. I am really excited to get started on my next project and need the table space
  6. More sanding and epoxy getting smoother each time but I’m still dealing with drips but three layers in on epoxy slowly filling low spots. Not too sure on how many layers I will be doing I figured until it’s nice and smooth all around. This part is boring and messy and my next project has arrived so I’m eager to get this done. outside of slowly working on this I have passed my first sailing certification which was quite exciting for me
  7. It’s my first time so I may have just poured too much and spread it out and not as smoothly as possible. Also probably my poor planking as that was also my first time. I think it will sand out and the next layer will be better
  8. I see a ton of sanding in my future after my first layer of epoxy. But wow it looks great even lumpy. Wasn’t sure how to go about it I saw others just pour and spread so that’s what I did with a playing card. After the bottom cures I will do the same on deck hopefully later tonight so I can sand and repeat tomorrow unless it needs more time to cure
  9. Ok I think I have filled my gaps sanded what I could and need to stop before I make things worse. Going to give it a wipe down and cleanup inside then onto epoxy this week I suppose. oh yeah I ordered my next project so I can start while this is getting epoxy treatment. Next up will be the lord Nelson victory tug. I am so excited as I should be able to see some real ones up close shortly to see how I want to finish that one.
  10. I have half a stick left! And all planked I ran around the yard with it like an airplane. Last few sticks had to be shaped to fit. I’m going to take a break then finish cutting out the cockpit and sand away. I want to cry
  11. I am so close! All it took was sitting here all day cut glue wait and repeat for a few hours. It’s getting really close on the strips and I will have to piece together the last bits to make it work. I am determined to finish the planking tonight. this was my weekend plans and so worth it to take the time to get the planking done
  12. Every weekend I look and think if I just sit for more than an hour I could just get so much done but then I look out and it’s just too nice and so I glue a stick or two and go. I like where it’s going but I should really get going so I can actually use it. Anyway more planking and hoping thinks line up this weekend boat adventure was on the schooner adventuress sailing out on the sound such a cool old boat and we had perfect wind
  13. Making a bit of progress adding sheets of balsa as a base for planking may not butt up perfectly but it will all be hidden. Carved down the walls of the hull to be flat. Up next more planking, and sanding but feels like I’m getting a lot done and closer to epoxy and paint. its boat season hear in Seattle so getting distracted on weekends but it is totally worth it.
  14. Working on the hatches today as well as making a pattern for the decking. Thinking of doing a slight change and lifting the hatch up a bit to break it up a bit much like this real version. I will skip the wind shield and think it will look better.
  15. Installing the cockpit today went pretty smooth. The seat will be removable for access to starting system held in by friction. I have any leather I want to use for the seat that I hope will work but not sure if I want to fix it to the seat or have it as a separate removable cushion. Up next work on decking one layer balsa under the planking like everywhere else even though that’s not what the plans say but I am excited to get that started. and for this weeks boat adventure we went of 4 different boats from old and slow to a newer fast passenger ferry to port orchard for a mosquito fleet festival where I saw a giant model of the Virginia v that I’ve never seen before and was very well done. Really couldn’t have been a much better day on the water without a boat of my own
  16. Roughly installed the steaming servo and need to remake the steering arm a bit longer so it can fully function. I’m thinking of making it from wood may be better than the thin sheet metal it says to make it with. What will be the best way to connect it to the prop shaft I’m thinkin a little superglue with a blob of regular glue to hold it. I am thinking that because how hard it was removing the smallest amount of resin from inside the rudder shaft tube. Feeling good about the placement of everything else and will remove and start building the cockpit this week. for our weekly boat adventure we checked out the classic workboat festival and got to see one of my favorite tugs the 130year old Arthur foss and snuck in a game of cribbage on board. We also got to see all few other beautiful boats and ones in the middle or restoration giving me deck planking ideas that I’m not sure I can pull off
  17. I will be down for the tugboat festival for sure, last year seeing the model boats and rc is what sparked this idea. It’s a short trip on Amtrak since we don’t drive maybe that’s my new end goal
  18. Lots of learning with the resin but it’s done and set it found the holes and now I get to do a bit of cleanup. Frustratingly I got some inside my rudder shaft and I cannot get it out just a small amount. I made a mess even though I tried my best with using gloves and working is small batches but I still ended up with resin on my pants my hands my arms the floor the doorknob and more lol today besides resin cleanup I’ve been working on my rudder and made it’s control arm. Mocking up electronics and making their mounts is next up after I get through and can install my rudder and actually connect and make sure everything electrical functions. yesterday took the train to Olympia for a wooden boat festival and got to be inspired to keep on building. Got to board and check out the tug Creosote that I saw last week in the parade. Also learned if you flip your boat you can just wear it like a hat because it’s Cap-sized
  19. Got a bit of filling and cleaning up the planking done and it’s looking better and better. Line of glue on the gap wipe and sand has done wonders on how it look. The bow needs some more shaping done that I am reluctant to do. Decided to test out the resin as I have never used it before and I slapped some on the dory over the paint and have started a small section on the inside of the miss adventure to see how that will go. I was using a sponge brush not sure how heavy or lite to apply. I was expecting to be totally gassed out by the epoxy but has no noticeable odor which makes me extremely happy I won’t have to work outside on in the basement. Yesterday was opening day for boating and I missed my goal of finishing this by that time but I get distracted once the weather is nice. So opening day was spent watching the Windermere cup rowing followed by a fantastic boat parade
  20. I’m excited about resin and pumps I believe I got the right stuff for the job and should have a bit of free time to hopefully get this boat finished. Picked up pumps from the boat store because i forgot them so an excuse to go on the ferry and look at more boats
  21. Finally have the bottom almost fully planked just a couple more on the rear but my sniper snapped so I stopped. The dremel made quick work of some trimming and I’ll be filling a bit and thinking of the best way to do so in between some planks that are a bit further apart than I had hoped. I was able to pick up epoxy and will be ordering their pumps for proper mixing easy from what I’ve read today I saw three whales 2 orca and I believe a small grey whale as well as a nice little red boat on my trip to breakfast
  22. Slowly going at it picked up a dremel to help and don’t know why I had not got one before. Almost done with the hull planking and will do some sanding and filling before I start with the resin. Today I’ll be by a boat shop and plan on picking up some west marine resin and hardener but not sure if I was the slow hardener or the faster
  23. Not feeling as confident as I want to be so things are going a little slower here is some weekend progress with planking that’s not as tight as I wish and the bow roughly done before sanding. For my first time doing this I give myself a b. And I give myself a d for the shipwreck in a bottle lol
  24. No my wife and I went to Poulsbo for our anniversary getaway we are in Seattle but I like going around where we can look at boats. So many models all over that small town almost every single shop had one on display
  25. More shaping and glueing planks and really liking how it’s turning out and feel like it will shape up nicely. Learning to use the bender and soaking sticks has been fairly easy and I wish I had purchased one much earlier. So happy to be back working on it
