  1. I’m calling this done 99% and I’ve taken it out first at night and then today where I could actually see. It’s slow but damn I love it and it looked great even used it to catch the sailboat that was drifting with no real wind. Not a drop of water inside didn’t lose my propeller or rudder and it got a few compliments as I cruised around chasing ducks I am so so very happy and can’t wait to keep building more IMG_0037.mov
  2. Alright new rudder is epoxied and I believe final assembly will happen this week after I pick up some Velcro to secure electronics and the battery I was working on my boats and had an urge to go check out the hydroplane museum so I went and was blown away with what they do there fully restoring classic race boats wooden frame with big Merlin v12 engines and I picked up a small plastic model rc because sadly they did not have any wood models but I am now inspired to possibly take on my first boat from plans
  3. Epoxy done on the inside I was worried it would leak a lot but the tape kept that to a minimum. The next step is to sand the outside of the hull before doing the fiberglass work, the instructions do not mention anything about fairing at this point but I believe I need to do quite a bit to make it nice so I picked up some fairing additive from the chandlery and will be trying that out shortly on the way to Bainbridge for Sunday breakfast and stop at the chandlery our ferry had to stop as multiple orca pods as well as a couple grey whales surrounded the boat such a super cool experience and sadly no pictures just memories and another sticker on the cribbage board to remember it by
  4. The pond (Hicklin lake)has decent access all around and is on a disc golf course it may not be the first place I go to test it that will be downtown at the wooden boat centers pond yatch pond shallow enough to wade to. I’m so close I can taste the finish line
  5. Feeling a little motivation to get this boat done so I pulled the broken rudder and remade it and added a couple finishing bits and carved out notches for the hinges. Drilling holes in this scared me at first but I’m going slow and doing it by hand. It’s going slow but with the weather worse I’ll have more time to get it done the motivation comes from my small little rc sailboat my wife got me and finding a wonderful little lake to use close by
  6. Hull has been planked and the feet have been removed down to deck level. I now covered the hull in masking tape and will be sealing the inside with epoxy I need to order some fiberglass for the exterior of the hull. it’s my 40th birthday and this was a great way to spend it also played around with this small rc sailboat for a little bit to hold me over until my next rc boat purchase or sailing lesson
  7. Still so distracted by October mariners so this is going a bit slower but I worked a good amount today finished phase 3 and started phase 4 planking the transom it looks rough right now but I haven’t sanded it flush yet but I finished the lower transom just as the Mariners won so I’m going to call it a day
  8. I’m still working on this I decided I was done with the varnishing and wet sanded a bit and decided it looked how it’s going to look and moved on. I am now waxing it up with this Howard citrus shield and I am a couple layers in and really liking it but it’s still a little spotty and not sure if I should keep going or try a different product.
  9. Middle of phase 3 planking and I am sure glad I have these handy clamps. It’s going slow as I’ve been way distracted with baseball this week so with the mariners having a week off before post season I hope to get this thing planked this week with any luck. It’s starting to look more and more like a tugboat hull to me
  10. Fantastic baseball and finished phase one of planking and removed the frame from the board without breaking any! bulwarks are next
  11. About halfway done with the first phase of planking and it’s moving along nicely I am enjoying the instructions on this one very nice plans and instructions making me feel more relaxed about not being 100% perfect as it will be sanded and faired before fiberglassing. I may not be the fastest at this and the manual says it took him 24 hours over 4 days to do the planking so I figure I’ll be done eventually
  12. Friday night framing comes to an end and looks like planking begins tomorrow after I stock up on some more sand paper and glue. Broke one while trying to get it past the stuffing box but it all glue right back together like nothing happened. I plan on spending the weekend planking and hopefully more finish work on my other build.
  13. Nothing like 13 innings and building a new boat. Frames 2-10 set keel has been laminated and stuffing box epoxied in place. This is going to be one big project. Already learning and chasing the cat away after she knocked out a couple frames
  14. Well I think I only found a model of the victory tug today but that works for me very inspired by this tug creosote and that may be the colors I’m lookin for. What a wonderful day doing “research”
  15. Sanded off most of the blemishing and gummy varnish that I created and found a spray spar varnish that I will be trying instead as I’ve seen it will be more forgiving. After three lighter coats I am liking the evenness and think after a few more done like this with a sanding in between it will hopefully polish up nicely in the end. since this is in the finishing stages I started my next build and the log is already began
  16. Ahoy it is time for me to begin my next build this will be my first tugboat. I picked one that was originally build here in Seattle that are still around for me to go see. The lord Nelson victory tug 37’ by dumas that I was finally able to get on sale. This project is for my wife so she has something to play with as well so I will make her do some of the work too. sofar the unboxing and labeling of pieces the cut pieces are a bit rough and includes some wood and plastic? Which I may end up cutting out of some ply but I will make that decision once I get there. today I start with the stand and labeling tomorrow I will actually be able to see one close up at Olympia harbor days as I’ve been told one showed
  17. Started varnish today and in my rush to stack up some layers I forgot to change out roller and tray and I made a crackly mess. guess I’ll let it dry properly and sand it out and start it back up again. Gotta remember to be patient
  18. Onto the final push and I finally broke down and got a sander and it is way better than doing it by hand. Just put on two layers of epoxy letting the first layer get slightly dry then adding another as I saw t done like that on a finishing video I watched. I’ll be knocking this back smooth and if I like it I will go ahead and start with layers of varnish. If not another layer of epoxy. Decided no paint and to just finish this up how it is. I am really excited to get started on my next project and need the table space
  19. More sanding and epoxy getting smoother each time but I’m still dealing with drips but three layers in on epoxy slowly filling low spots. Not too sure on how many layers I will be doing I figured until it’s nice and smooth all around. This part is boring and messy and my next project has arrived so I’m eager to get this done. outside of slowly working on this I have passed my first sailing certification which was quite exciting for me
  20. It’s my first time so I may have just poured too much and spread it out and not as smoothly as possible. Also probably my poor planking as that was also my first time. I think it will sand out and the next layer will be better
  21. I see a ton of sanding in my future after my first layer of epoxy. But wow it looks great even lumpy. Wasn’t sure how to go about it I saw others just pour and spread so that’s what I did with a playing card. After the bottom cures I will do the same on deck hopefully later tonight so I can sand and repeat tomorrow unless it needs more time to cure
  22. Ok I think I have filled my gaps sanded what I could and need to stop before I make things worse. Going to give it a wipe down and cleanup inside then onto epoxy this week I suppose. oh yeah I ordered my next project so I can start while this is getting epoxy treatment. Next up will be the lord Nelson victory tug. I am so excited as I should be able to see some real ones up close shortly to see how I want to finish that one.
  23. I have half a stick left! And all planked I ran around the yard with it like an airplane. Last few sticks had to be shaped to fit. I’m going to take a break then finish cutting out the cockpit and sand away. I want to cry
