Thanks much. I'll try to test it a bit before gluing the second deck on. In the meantime, I am thinking of doing a jig to get the shape of the piece at the bow. I broke the wood on the first attempt despite soaking and using heat.

Received the AL King of the Mississippi kit for Christmas with the light kit and motor. I am wondering how bright the lights are. Should I caulk the small gaps where the rooms attach to the deck? This is my first wooden kit build, so the fit isn't perfect.

Gap on flat bottom
WGibson replied to WGibson's topic in Building, Framing, Planking and plating a ships hull and deck
Quick update. I filled in at the bottom with a plank on each side. I think it turned out fine. As for the rest of the planking, the front of the boat was a bit of a bear. The previous version of this kit had plywood that wrapped around to form the front of the hull. This version has fully planked side, but they are single planked. That curve is pretty challenging with 2.5mm thick planks that also have to twist down. For my first time planking a hull (previous builds have been on my model railroad), I can live with it. Much sanding and filling and more sanding to do with it and I'm confident I can get it looking fine. At this point though, I would not suggest boarding a boat that I've planked. -

Thanks Mark and Gary. My concern is with the small gap at the edge of the subdeck. I zoomed in on the instructions and they actually put a thin sliver of planking at the edges. I'll give it a try, hopefully without breaking many pieces of wood in the process. When all done, I'll sand and use Mark's method to fill gaps between planks. -
Just starting my first wooden boat, AL King of the Mississippi. The good news is that everything came out straight and centered. The bad news is that there is a small gap between the edge of the planks and the edge of the frame on both sides. It's really small to try and adhere another plank to, but would that be your suggestion? I thought about getting the sides down and then adding another plank to the bottom so that there would be some more width. Thanks for any thoughts!

Very nicely done! I just started this build tonight and will be coming back here regularly as I progress. Thanks for sharing.
