Got up this morning and started sanding the filler and then primed it with Liquitex Gesso which is a superb primer and also available at Michael’s. Reefed my sails and am sitting back and enjoying the day. Best Rick

It hardly smells so you may like it. It also spreads like whip cream. Michaels also has great acrylic artist paints that in my opinion are better than Tamiya and Model Expo and come in a wide range of colors. They are Liquitex Acrylic Basic Fluid (professional artist paints). When you use them they don’t leave brush marks and are very reasonably priced ($6.99) and you always have a 30% coupon. If you look at my Bluenose log you will see how nice they are. Best Rick

Fun day today. Finished planking then sanded the hull. Covered 1/2 the hull with Artist Loft Modeling Paste from Michaels. Modeling Paste works great as a filler and sands out very smooth. I filled 1/2 for the photo and will fill the other before I turn in so they dry overnight. Best Rick

The latest to begin the Model Shipways 3 kit set

Have no fear with the glue it will sand off in the end. Brian remember it’s always better to have it securely bonded than fall off in the end ( especially with white glue). A little extra glue also fills small openings. I use white glue more than CA because every time I use it, it sticks to everything (esp my fingers) except the part you are gluing which proceeds to fall off. We all have experienced this Best. Got up this morning and decided to lay over in port. Next to where I was anchored locals were planking a boat in dry dock and they asked me if I wanted to pitch in and help. Since I was here for the day I joined in. After a full day of hard work it’s time to turn in for the night and prepare to resume my adventure tomorrow. As Always Best Rick

Welcome and I totally agree. Best Rick -
A very warm welcome and enjoy the adventure the main advice I can give you is “Don’t get overwhelmed “. I’m glad to see you put off the USS Constitution and opted for some learning skill level kits. With any build treat the many many parts as individual models, enjoy and your skills will grow as you progress Enjoy your adventures and welcome aboard. Best Rick (RVB)

And then some! You can never have too much of everything in this hobby because even the most ridiculous thing at some point in time will find its way to a build. And WELCOME ABOARD All the Best. Rick

Sun just came up raised the anchor and set sail. One of my duties today is to find out where I am and where the hell I’m going. All decks need to be swabbed so off to work. Will catch up with all later in my ships log. As Always Best and happy sailing in all your adventures! Rick

While at sea today sprung a leak in the hole requiring urgent structural repair. After breaking 2 bulkheads on installation (being warned after reading other captain’s nautical logs they were very fragile) at the point where they met the keel I reinforced them with 3/16 blocks. All leaking areas secured so will drop anchor and retire for the night. Best Rick

Back at sea again and been working like a beaver-seal painting and test fitting bulkheads. After finishing cockpit test fit and letting the bulkheads dry and lined up in order held by magnetic clips on 1-2-3 blocks they are ready for installation.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
