Midwest made a steam engine for their kits Fantail Launch11. I’m sure Picket could be easily adapted to live steam. MSW member Terrypat built that model and turned me on to it. I ended up finding one on EBay for $60 (a really great price or the vintage kit) Al I need now is to find the engine kit that was sold separately. Also thanks so much for the complement! Best Rick

Advised my granddaughter while we armed and assembled the torpedo please be careful for her own and my health while painting the torpedo head. She is not only lazy but clumsy and all I can see is KABOOM. If I am still around tomorrow I will post in my log. God Speed and Good Night Best Rick

After stepping down from the howitzer I realized the Pirates may have steel protected runabouts forcing me to start work on the Torpedo. Needing to attach it to the gunnels I needed to fabricate holding brackets. ( words of advice. The instructions as earlier in my adventure call for making rivets which I attempted unsuccessfully and after an hour I used drops of CA on the back of the copper nails. In the case of the torpedo holders chose to solder the parts together. Easy quick and successful. Then blackened the brass with JAX. Better than painting with no covering of detail.) Getting into endangering waters so back to work. Best Rick

The howitzer is finally finished. All loggers welcome aboard. The time has come to take on the PIRATES. Too too bad for them!

Paul as said numerous times before WELCOME. As far as tools I agree get what you need as you need them but make sure initially purchase a bunch cheap spring clamps. You can never have too many. When your hands won’t fill the need they will. I find just when I think I have enough I will be in a situation wishing if I only had one more. Also by joining MSW you have access to 1000s of years of experience available as needed. Welcome Best RVB (Rick)

Rick just like you said about modeling and patients is absolutely true. My dog and building models never ask anything of me but give me great pleasure. That’s the reason I spent around 2000 hours and 2 years of my life building the Model Shipways USS Niagara.

Pat the best part of being a dentist is that I could make big macho men cry. Not many men can say that.

We not only have being a dentist in common and being retired we both have the name Rick. People ask me how I can sit for hours and build little things I tell them this is a piece of cake compared to dentistry. I tell them in my profession I would sit for hours with a drill going 400,000 rpms working in a couple mm hole upside down and backwards (mirror image) with a spray hindering my vision. Dentists also spend their whole working life carving that’s why dentists are good modelers. It’s nice to meet another dentist on MSW and I am sure there are many of us. Hope you join my journey. Best Rick

James the thing I learned the most was when I was ririgging Model Shipways USS Niagara. I learned NOT to drink 4 beers while doing intricate rigging. I reached in and broke off a couple Yards. Took 2 weeks to correct the destruction. Best Rick

I agree totally the planking looked great. There is something to be said about feeling proud and successful about building accomplishments. Also don’t feel bad about your mistakes. Remember you don’t really learn much from successes but you surely learn a HELL OF ALOT from mistakes. We’ve all been there and mistakes make you a far better builder. Also nice looking build for you first boat. When ever you have a problem feel free to message me. Hopefully from all my failures I might be able to help. As always Best Rick

Well we worked in the storm while at sea on the torpedo and the howitzer, mostly painting and some carving of the torpedo head. Since the sun has set and it is still snowing it’s time to call it quits and turn in until tomorrow morning. Best Rick IMG_3807.mov

Been up most of the night and finally got the engine together. Starting it up for a test run. Granddaughter and I hoping to get out of port before the storm hits. It appears to run pretty good. While at sea today we need to arm the vessel with a cannon and torpedo to fend off sea PIRATES. Until later at sea. Best Rick

As said many times a warm WELCOME to MSW. With your past history modeling ships you found the right place to drop anchor (MSW). Having a log and participation is enjoyable. Nice build. Best Rick

Big storm coming tomorrow so will stay in port for another day. Almost finished the steam engine just a wee bit of plumbing to go. Will finish in the morning. Put new iron straps on the steam boiler (3mm satin black auto pinstriping. Sure beats painting cutting and gluing card stock. May try using it for waterline in the future. It work great for the iron straps and comes in multiple widths from 1mm on up. Would be great to get a very crisp waterline with out all the headaches associated with painting Time to turn in for the night because 5AM comes quick. Best Rick

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
