  1. Weather suppose to deteriorate Tuesday with snow squalls predicted. Anxious to get back to sea hopefully tomorrow at the latest before the storm my granddaughter actually got up early today. The steam engine is almost back together.A wee piping to go. Will put it off until tomorrow since the sun is setting. Until tomorrow AM Best Rick
  2. Greg and Terry if you want crisp water lines I stay away from hobby brands. I use 3M fine line tape for painting pinstripes ( I restored cars and had a full shop at my house).it comes in varying widths 1/16” 1/8”1/4” etc. To get fine Llnes first paint your stripe color then lay the tape in the width the line you need. Then burnish the tape then paint the stripe color over it to seal it. Then paint your hull colors over the last stripe color layer and let them dry. When you pull the fine line tape you will have a very crisp water line or stripe you want. Try it first on a piece of primed basswood. Also Liquitex Gesso is great primer ( cheaper and better than hobby primers around $13 for 8oz and sands perfectly smooth). All professional paints. Best Rick By the way Greg the black I used was the Liquitex Basic Acrylic Fluid- Ivory Black a satin black color)
  3. Terry you are up to painting. When I painted my Bluenose I tested many colors to find the right hull bottom color. The color I picked was as right under my nose. I checked a bunch of Tamiya and model expo colors and none really matched. The I went back and checked out Liquitex Basic Acrylic Fluid colors. I first tried Cadmium red deep Hue, a no go. The second one I tried matched almost 100% ( Alizarin Crimson Hue). Take a look at it and see what you think if you are looking for a burgandy. Best Rick
  4. The only words I can think of is VERY VERY IMPRESSIVE!!!!!!!!! Best Rick
  5. Thanks Phil for the mechanic encouragement. This morning working on the engine was traumatic to my health. I’m sure you have been there. The riveting was a pain in the — — S. After a very frustrating hour I ended up making the rivet heads back up with CA. They are hidden and you can’t see them because they are in the back side. Sure worked a hell of a lot better than trying to hammer a tiny copper nail on a 1-2-3 block to create a flat head to secure the parts. 5 minutes for all 3 rivets instead of an hour plus repeated failures. Best Rick
  6. Another nice day and anxious to get back on my adventure. Spent the morning reassembling the steam engine. I’m a great mechanic but this little steam engine is a pain in the neck. There is something great to be said about sail power. Having raced a Vanguard 470 you can actually feel the power in your arms and butt as the sails fill. You don’t get that with this little steam engine when it’s running.
  7. Welcome! Sit back build and enjoy MSW. I found many great people here and I am sure you will too. I was a lone builder for many years then I found MSW and its nice to have other people I can share my build headaches with and nine out of ten times someone on MSW will have a solution to my problem. Best Rick
  8. Sun setting and still in port. Painted engine parts dry but will wait till tomorrow to start reassembly. Until tomorrow Best Rick
  9. Mid afternoon and airbrushed engine parts. Didn’t get any help from my - - - y granddaughter but she can’t wait to set sail again.
  10. By the way notice the magnetic part holders. They are made for holding parts when airbrushing but I use them for everything from painting to holding small parts when I’m working on them. I even hang them from my work light when I run out of room on their stand. One of the best things I ever bought. The kit is very cheap on EBay. Best Rick
  11. Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving! Got up this Am before the sun. Can’t head out (weather and wave outlook great) because I need an engine that’s not in multiple pieces so back to work.
  12. Well it’s late in the afternoon and she finally got up. TO BE YOUNG AGAIN!! Since it near dinner I thought we would celebrate with all my log followers. HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO All
  13. Got up this morning at 5 and the seas were rough so decided to stay in port. Since my lazy granddaughter sleeps till noon only thing to do was work on the engine. After 3 or 4 hours things started to look good.
  14. Well after a hard day at work my granddaughter became unhinged because of my anal compulsive behavior making sure my hinges were working and straight on the coal bins. Since she stressed me out and knowing tomorrow we will head to sea again I decided to take a jacuzzi bath to relax before bed. As Always Best and Good Night Rick
  15. A thank you to ALL!! I hope all of you are enjoying the adventure with me. Best Rick
  16. Hi Terry Out of nowhere this appeared on my EBay site and I won it for $60 ( a really great price for a vintage kit. All the ones online are in the $200 range) Not my next build but it’s waiting in line. As Always Best Rick
  17. How do you make a lazy granddaughter shovel coal (what I really mean is help pick up the dishes after dinner). All suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Notice shovels haven’t been moved! Best Rick
  18. Got up this morning and headed out to sea. Boat was not steering well so headed back to port to fix and paint the rudder and rebuild the tiller. While in port waiting for the paint to dry headed into town to pick up some supplies and found 2 shovels for my granddaughter to load the steam boiler with coal. Were both tired so retiring for the evening and looking forward to head out to sea first thing in the morning. By the way painted the rudder to match the boat trim with Liquitex Basic Acrylic Fluid— Alizarin Crimson Hue. As Always Best until tomorrow Rick
  19. Terry. I forgot to mention that they spread like whip cream with a brush and when they dry they don’t leave brush marks. I paint almost all wood with a brush. Today I am going to paint the rudder. I primed it with Liquitex gesso which is a great primer and it sands smooth and I’m going to paint it with Liquitex Basic Acrylic Fluid—Alizarin Crimson Hue. When I post the pictures you can see how it looks. Best Rick
  20. Hi Terry I airbrush them and they work great. No odor, easy clean up with isopropyl alcohol which can like water also be used as a thinner. They also sell Liquitex airbrush thinner (12oz for around $13). They also have setting time and hardener mediums. I order online sometimes and you get the paint in 1-2 days. Also if you sign up to be a Michaels member (2 minutes ) you will get 30-40% off coupons every day. Also online they have an extensive amount of colors to pick from. The paints are $6.99 and with the coupon around $4.50 for 4oz. Best Rick I
