Work area pictures only
Bomber_County replied to Johnny Mike's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
Hi all, about to start ship building so I reorganised my workspace. The right hand section will now be plastic modelling whilst the left hand space for ship building. The left space may also morph into spray booth area but time will tell, the booth is portable so can be added at anytime. This always subject of how much dust and and detritus I will produce prior to airbrushing. I do tend to clean and clear the bench every-time I finish (ex engineer) so it may not be a problem. All the furniture is from the wonderful world of IKEA. -
Roland, just about to start my first ship, reading your log scares me to death that I'm going to completely •••••• the build. Been a plastic modeller for a very long time so this is another step. Hm Sherbourne is being delivered by sled so keen to start the journey. Stunning build Roland hopefully I'll achieve around 5% of your skill.

Welcome aboard Andy, I’m also a newbie. Good to see a UK builder.

Drill bit suggestions
Bomber_County replied to SiriusVoyager's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
I use DSPIAE drill bits for must projects, very impressed with them. I'd also recommend their tools as well. -
I was looking to improve my Dremel arsenal of tools and attachements for ship building. In my search (price checking) I found that Amazon UK have significant deals on a number of Dremel items. For instance, their drill stand was reduced by 32% and yes the wallet did try to remain sealed but alas to no avail. Early Santa presents.

Welcome to MSW, I’m a newbie myself, the amount of information on here is incredible.

Thanks Andrew, there is so much to read here not sure if I'm going to get any modelling done. The Sherbourne is due to be delivered on Thursday....... Phil.

Mike, thank you so much for your exhaustive reply. MDF is my biggest concern, over the years I’ve always sanded resin using water etc but ship building is another genre. The major sanding I’ll do in the garage where all my large wood and metal working machines are. Thanks for the advise it’s food for thought Phil.

Thanks, much appreciated. Phil.

Thanks Chris, awaiting delivery of the Sherbourne. Phil.

Thanks John, I worked in the design industry all my life and that meant daily project deadlines that had to be met. Retirement has cleared my brain of all deadline anxiety, so life is a more relaxed affair. I will definitely do a build log. Phil.

Thanks Jim, I won't mention the cricket. Phil.

Thanks Patrick, looking forward to the adventure.

Thanks, much appreciated, having an engineering background I must tend to not except “that will do”.
-
Thanks Keith, hoping to learn lots. Phil.
-
Thanks Bob, I’m guilty as most in looking at the next and next project but not until the Sherbourne slips it’s berth. Phil.

Thanks Geordie, I’d heard that Vanguard had a good reputation and also their grading of skill levels made sense. Phil.

A little background. Been modelling for along time mostly scale plastic modelling in 1/32, 1/35 and 1.48, primarily aircraft and AFV's. Have been actively modelling since 2016 after the customary return to the hobby stage.Have only ever built one marine based model and that was the Italeri Elco PT 596 which I attempted to detail but not to the level of you guys. Since retiring last year I feel I needed a new genre to tackle and hence my first venture into wooden ship modelling. I am going to attempt to build Chris Watton's, HMS Sherborne cutter. It is advertised as novice and I can say that's exactly where I place myself. Looking forward to learning.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
