  1. Pete, that sounds like good technique I will try as well. My question about that is how soaked does the balsa get? Does it turn into a wet paper or more like a card stock? I haven't tried amonia yet, only rubbing alcohol with basswood. Cap'n - Awesome, I really needed to see a good picture of how the bottom should look. I have been out of town this week for various stuff, cannot wait to get back to the build on Saturday! Thanks again to all for your advice!
  2. Thanks Chris! I will try that. I don't want to break the balsa plank but regardless I need to trim it down but I can't figure out how to measure it previous to the modification. This definitely seems like the hardest part of the kit. I am pondering making each side into 4 planks instead but I worry about the angling up front.
  3. Also I will note that have ignored the transom for right now, I will deal with that later as I think I can do a few mods to it.
  4. Here is where I have a serious issue. The second lower section is about 150% bigger than needed and needs to be attached very specifically, I am stuck on this part. Note the pictures, the instructions have you fit it on against the keel, ending at the transom and the forward bulkhead. Also, it seems to twist from one end to the other and needs to be trimmed down, but where I am puzzled. This is where any advice would be awesome!
  5. This was the first tricky part as the instructions have you bend the plank over the side of the deck and the battan. It was very thin balsa wood so I did it in two sections, top first, then I pinned the bottom to the battan once the top part was set. After that there is some trimming and the some sanding to the fit the bottom part, the next phase.
  6. I just got this in the mail, I am 90% done with it and am going to start creating ropes tonight. Only problem is I have no idea what I am doing other than reading how to operate it via the instructions. Anyone have an advice or tips on rope making with this thing? Thanks! - Casey
  7. @ Floyd - The Harvey is cool looking ship, Have fun with it, I may have to pick that one up as well and do some adjusting once I get more experience.
  8. Hi Kirk- My first build was a midwest product as well. My main complaint was that they only suggested medium CA for the glue, which made it very difficult to fix mistakes for a first time builder. As for the gaps, if you are going tp paint it, I use my 11 blade and cut out a little piece of wood matching the part and fit in there and then I sand it down to fit, it works very well to fill the gaps like pics 2 & 3. Also, I use Wonder Fill wood filler and it plugs things up great, would work very well for pic 1. Best of luck!
  9. Hey guys, I read a lot about kits and historical accuracy when I started my first build. I came to this conclusion now that I'm starting to plan a more difficult model-- if I want to build a famous ship like the Mayflower or the Enterprise, I will not buy a kit unless it is deemed accurate or I am good enough to modify it to meet what I think is more accurate. If I want to build a certain type of ship like a brigantine or a caravel, I don't think I care about the name the company gave the kit as I could easily rename it and add features to my liking. Does anyone agree? -Casey
