Looking good Pete. Are you going to plank the scratch hull? I thought that would be cool since that damn balsa block in front keeps one from having a natural hull look, thus having to paint over. What are your plans for the decks? Interested to see the difference between the two. I have the Midwest Chesapeake Flattie kit in my arsenal, I was thinking about making two similar to what you have done with the lobster boat. Probably a little easier than the lobster boat as well. Hope all is well at home, did you figure out if the build was causing any problems? The ship is looking good! As for the bleed, here is what did with the lobster boat. I went to Home Depot and grabbed a small bottle of the Martha Stewart sealer in the paint section. I brushed that on the parts I was painting and then scrubbed it down with 320 sandpaper. The acrylic went on great and the paint stuck to the sealer and did not bleed through even the thinnest basswood. Best of luck with boat! Also, I would say have a good weekend but it will be difficult when the Vikings destroy the Packers on Sunday! haha!

Maybe the sails on the plank on frame are already stitched and detailed while the others you have to sew and cut from a sheet? That could be a star in itself! -
Hey, one thing I failed to do was after soaking the side boards, using masking tape to put them in place and let them dry. That's how I got those rail gaps, didn't let them set. Impatience is very bad for this hobby!!

Here is the transom shot, I can make this really good or really F it up, haha. I have spent about 3 hours trying out different combos for this damn part. I swear I made the hull in like 5 hours, and now have spent 10+ trying to customize the damn deck!!

The light isn't that great all together in there unfortunately, I bought an LED lamp at Office Max that clamps to the side of the desk, works great, only $20. Highly recommended as it can hover over the boat or bend down to the bottom. Thats the light from the right side. I cut out some mahogany pieces to try out for the transom last night, going to restain the wood with Varathane Early American, much better than the Minwax I used before, deeper color.

Nice, like the door in front. Are you going to open the hatch? I thought about it but the keel got in the way! looks you like already found a way around that. Looking forward to more pics.

Pardon my lack of knowledge, but are the sails made of plastic? if so, I would use a pin vise / mini drill.

Birthday was great, thanks, with the exception of the ATV I rolled at 2am! I am really thinking about repainting the deck on mine, the white paint didn't go on well with the sealer. It looks weathered and all but I may need to do a touch up. What are your plans for the paint scheme? The balsa blocks in the front of the boat make it tough to stain with that nasty vertical line on both sides.

This is a far as I got this weekend. Up on its display temporarily, now I to work on the bow and stern before I can hoist the sales. Also, the pre-cut rudder matches the plans but is way too big for the build, anyone else in the lobster boat society have this issue as well. Also, this pic provides a new view of my shipyard! I've got a mini USS Constitution for rigging practice back there I didn't make a build log for. And of course my first build, the Midwest Dinghy with no display supports yet.

Thanks guys. I'm two years away from 40! Just built the base for the lobster boat today. Took,longer than I thought. Stained it dark and drying it now. I will post pics tomorrow as I am off to a relatives house for a bonfire. Thanks again for following my lobster boat journey!

In this post you will see I followed the previous advice and I soaked the wood in rubbing alcohol (my preference over water) and also cut out a card stock piece to help me trim the wood down. It worked out great and finished perfect. Hope that helps.

Thanks Pete. I just got a new workspace built today, getting back to boat this weekend. I am going to rig it in the next few days. Still undecided on the front end. It's a fun build once you get past that weird balsa hull section. I have tons of advice based off mistakes made, haha.

First ship looks great. I don't know why everyone is up in arms (or hooks,haha) over the "pirate" thing? Any ship from a dinghy to a 3 mast 72 gunner can be a pirate ship. It's all about the identity the maker decides at the finish, right?

On my lobster boat the keel slots were a little off. I widened them with an exacto knife and used some scrap to fill the space. Worked great.

Looks great Pete, I have to get mine going again, I'm almost at the exact same stage. How did the 1/32 siding boards handle? Mine broke pretty quick, I resorted to a thicker strip of basswood.

Try pouring some clear rubbing alcohol on the deck and pit it between two heavy books overnight with plastic wrap. Pretty sure that will straighten it out.
