CA glue extender tips question
cdogg replied to cdogg's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
Thanks for the feedback Nigel, I added the pictures to show the two types of applicators I am dealing with. @Tom, I read that soaking the extender tip in Acetone with clear it up? True or better trimming it or throwing away? -
CA glue extender tips question
cdogg replied to cdogg's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
I bought a bag of both extenders and replacement tips. Here are generic photos; I am trying to get these two to work but they are not the same brand but look the same. -
Does anyone have any advice on how to fit these onto normal CA glue bottles? I tried the other day and it worked ok until the damn thing popped off and nearly dumped a good chunk of CA on my boat deck.

Looks great! Nice first build, you planning the other two ships to make a set?

compound table for Dremel work station
cdogg replied to rtropp's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
Rtropp- Thanks! Only problem is where to hide it! I would love that thing but my wife has put the foot down on cool ship building tools. As long as I justify the dremel as a "potential" jewelry polisher, I get free reign! haha. -
compound table for Dremel work station
cdogg replied to rtropp's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
I was thinking about a dremel stand today. I was making some custom parts for the boat and thought of a mounted dremel, kind of like Bob's but pointing up through a hole for sculpting wood on a flat surface. Probably easier to make one but hey I like using the wireless dremel by hand. It gets messy with basswood but faster than sanding!!! -
Between the two boards I have a glaring issue that I am open to suggestion on how to fix. I might use mahogany dust to fill it in, if any one has any cool ideas please let me know.

Front end needs some magic yet. Also, I my last post I showed a decent sized gap on the location where the hatches go. One piece of mahogany seemed to fix that.

The open holes for windows just seemed wrong, so I cut out some plastic pieces from a opened glue package and made some windows.

Well, almost done with the hull. Decided to mix it up a bit, changed the side paneling to 3/32 basswood and stained it American Oak. Jury is still out on the transom, somehow I always end up modding that. Paint job wasn't great but it was my first attempt.

Here is the painted version with the first side lining. I used stain on the 3/32 piece, the 1/32 was too thin.

Try to find rubber tipped tweezers. They work awesome with soft wood and smaller pieces.

thanks Dee Dee. I did dry fit it. I think what happened was I got so obsessed with getting the bowsprit and hull lined up a may have moved it so this happened, didn't notice until I was too late. I will go with the wood bits, post some pics later today

This has been on my mind and I thought I would throw this out there. About a month ago, I was bidding on the Constructo Mayflower kit on Ebay. I thought I was getting a great deal for around $100 and was the leading bidder for around 4 days. Then I started to research the ship a little more in detail. I started to think that the Constructo version was a little too pretty for an authentic version of the Mayflower. Some of the other kits are less attractive but I found to be more realistic of what the Mayflower may have looked like around 1620. Alas, I stopped bidding and lost a great kit for around $120. I really think that when my skill level is up to speed I will grab a kit similar to what ships looked like in the early 17th century. Am I correct in thinking this way? Thanks

Here is my latest needed fix. Somehow I measured everything great but the crack is there. Should I fill it with wood glue and paint over? I was also think about placing a 1/8 x 1/16 basswood strip over it and staining that section. The hatch door will be there so the basswood strip may need to be creative.

For the last week my boat has sat dormant due to my work schedule. I managed to almost get the hull done and now it awaits paint. I must admit I am terrified of ruining this boat with the wrong color scheme but alas it is my first attempt at painting a wood ship. Below I have applied sealer to it, which did a great job of blending in the wood filler and smoothing out the hull for paint.

CA glue and metal fittings
cdogg replied to cdogg's topic in Metal Work, Soldering and Metal Fittings
No I just used the medium CA. I will try the gel. Thanks! -
Pardon me if this has been discussed before but quick question. The CA glue I have doesn't work with metal on wood. I'm guessing this is because the wood absorbs the CA and the metal loosens from the connection? Example is oar locks, they seem to keep popping out regardless of the amount of CA I used. This also happened with the rope walk I built. Should I use model cement or wood glue? Thanks.

Thanks again to all who offered advice for the hull. I made card stock patterns, fitted them, then soaked them in alcohol for 15 minutes and they slid right in!
