Hi Don and welcome to my build log.

I continued my work on the keel.  I first glued some black paper on the keel.

Afterwards I glued the different pieces to each other.

I just did the stem, as I’ve noticed the pieces at the stern were not long enough.  There’s a gap between them and the profile former.

Back to the saw to fabricate new pieces.

There's also a small gap at the sterm but since that part will dissapear when the planking will be done, i'll just glue a small filler piece between them.

For the curved piece of the keel, I made a simple jig to keep enough pressure on the parts till the glue dries and to make sure, the pieces are flat to each other.

An overview of the whole keel and the profile former with the stern pieces and profile former not yet glued to each other.

Now I was wondering if have not made a mistake here.  I used black paper to simulate the caulking, but are those pieces really supposed to have caulking between them?

Then it was time to make my first sawdust.  I glued all the bulkheads on a sheet of ply and then cut them out using a scroll saw.

After sawing them out (i had to leave enough on them), i used the sander to finetune the bulkheads.

I printed the plans a couple of times, en used them to cut out the forms to make the keel. I temporarily glued them using a paper glue on a piece of cherry wood.  First time i used this wood, and it sure is a difference from the wood used in kits. It feel and looks so much nicer.

The long task is continuing. Nothing is glued yet. Only the part of the contour touching the rail is don the inner part is still to shape. It is a hard part to do because it is difficult to take efficient measures. I do not exactly what would be the best way to go. The only thing I know for sure is that for these 10 pieces, I did each one at least twice. This is 2 sets of 5 pieces. To align each set, I installed a sheet to make sure for the alignment.

Thank you for your comments. I took some picture to visualize the alignment of these 6 parts.

Hi all sorry its been such a long time since my last post but i sort of lost interest in her for a while for several reasons, 1 the mast got bent again also the pe seats at the stern got bent up as did the railing running around the raised observation area at the back (came home from work to find her on the floor upside down, got there from the back of a unit up against the wall. but no one touched it, it just moved 18" across the unit and on the floor on its own) 2, never used pe before and finding it really hard it is so small 3, and the main reason the pe windows i got from Toms Model Works does not include all the windows, the ones i have done so far (which the kit included) wont even be seen once i put the sides on, the ones that are missing are all on the top decks so could be seen(see pic)

as you can see the tall windows with the arches at the top are not present in the pe kit.
Still all that aside i have decided to build and paint what i have got so if there are no pe windows for the part i will just paint the plastic parts ( its a good job i didnt cut the plastic windows out before i checked the pe which is what i have been doing, i would have been right up the creek without a paddle then).
so here is a pic of the plastic windows painted, i dont think it notices that bad actually.

    hi all here's tonight's update.
i have cut out the holes in the decks to allow the light to shine up and illuminate the upper decks

and as you can see i think it is going to work quite well.

    Yet another update

I have realised i will have to cut some of the inner decking out to let the light shine up from the led's as there is no room between the decks to put led lights.

as you can see from the picture of the decks resting on the hull there is no room for led's between the decks so I will have to rely on the light from the led's inside the ship (although once i have cut the inside decks out i may be able to add a couple of extra led's between decks) i wont know that till i cut the decks out.

    hi just a small update

i have discovered cutting out the windows is best done from the back of the piece,  i did damage the side of one of the windows when i cut it out as they are so small(luckily it don't show now i have stuck the pe on but just to be on the safe side i will cut all the rest from the back).

Some of the PE is so small.

I had fun bending that i can tell you.
Got a slightly bendy mast here.

    Sorted

I have made the keel which is pictured below.  It is made by layering up a few pieces which did fit together really well. Because the kit is CNC cut the wood billets need to be shaped quite a bit to get rid of the mill marks but the end result is pretty accurate.

starting the frames with an example of the pieces.

Completed all the full frames. I did leave these fairly rough as I expect to be able to fair the frames down in a later step.

Next step is the half frames!

I am finally back home where I can start up this build log.  So lets give this thing a whirl!  I am definitely still a beginner although I have built a few models in the past.  These include the Swift (Artesania Latina), Indian girl canoe (Midwest), and various other small boats.

This will be my first plank on frame attempt. Can’t wait!

This is a now discontinued kit from Lauck Street Shipyard and Mr. Bob Hunt.  Mr. Hunt is better known for his “College of Model Ship Building” which is a collection of progressive practicums that start with beginner kits and progress all the way to scratch building.  At one time a few years ago he developed a series of kits which included this Halifax, The Fair American, Kingfisher and Fubbs (I think).

The Halifax sloop of war in 1/4 scale plank on frame kit based on plans by Harold Hahn.  The parts are CNC milled and not laser cut which is nice and the wood quality seems a step above.

I guess we always start with a close up picture of the Box:

The contents are very neatly packaged and all present:
