    Hollander-jan got a reaction from Stockholm tar in HMC Sherbourne 1763 by Hollander-jan - Caldercraft - 1/64
The deck is on the boat. It is far from perfect. In the end, and after this exercise, I can say, "It
looks like a deck in my opinion". At the moment I can not do any better than this.
To show this product on the site Of MSW gives me the feeling that altough every thing is not perfect.
But let me tel you I am proud of it.
iff you will give me comments than that's OK. I enjoy What I am doing with the
skills I now have. This was one of the hardest things I have ever done with wood believe me.
(and I have done something with wood, altough it always was bigger than this deck)
It was a learnig proces all the way, I hope to do better next time.

And like Kester said only we know how hard it is and where the imperfections are.

    picture of deck.

More difficult things to come, we are making a model boat, improving our skills, and doing this
to the best of our abbilitys.

    Cheers

There's a small guide to joggling at https://sites.google.com/site/shipwrightsfaq/smf-q072. The nibbing that I ended up doing I showed in my log at http://modelshipworld.com/index.php?/topic/335-hmc-sherbourne-by-tkay11-–-caldercraft-–-scale-164-1763-a-novice’s-caldercraft-sherbourne/?p=3203.

    Gregor,

Very nice, and you've done a great job with the lettering and stern. Ah, yes, the Great Pinrail Crisis of 13/14 – I remember it well! Don't look too closely at my log though, as I'm far from sure myself – and partly making it up as I go along. The only thing I can say is, that if you're thinking of extending the rail, I urge you to do it now – before installing the mast and rigging!

    Eamonn,

You're Sherbourne's on your shelf, gathering dust!? Well, ok, you do have the Ballahoo to work on. I look forward to when you start on her though.

Thank you Tony, Jan and  Kester for the uplifting comments. I will definitely continue, did some experiments today.
This support is more than welcome. Eventually it will work out.
And then we look back in amazement. And we'll say it was difficult but the job is done.

Know now that from the center to the boards is better. Have some other work in the house to do but I'll be back be sure off that.

Nasgûl, I thank you for what you said and appriciated verry much. I have done some building in the past but this is more difficult than that wat i did. Never the less I do what I can. Luckely I am a determent man and do not give up easely. So in the end there will be a ship and my skills wil have been developed. Bonus is the fun I have to do it.

Jan, I like your approach in model building. I also share this view, I sometimes keep my mistakes as lessons learned. I'm building the Vasa and I've looked at reference of the real ship alot when buiding her. The real ship was far from perfect and in fact has lots of wonkyness and unsymmetrical features. I find that beautyful and try to incorporate that into my model whenever I can. Point is that old ships weren't perfect, at least not from the 1600's. I think your build has personality and soul and I enjoy that. You can be proud of your build.

    Planking

I almost finished my planking on the Sherbourne. Just one ore two planks and the whale on the starboard side.

What is there to say about this project.

To be honest it was above my capabilities. And I mean by that woodworking and caracter. To eager to prove
I was able do do it. But had not enough patince to carry the project to a better standard and most of all
did not do the first planking to well. Because of the first planking being not to well I had to do this
clinker planking to hide all the faults I made.

What to say about the end product is is what it is. I have learned a lot. About model ship building and about
how I can do it better. First be more patient in working out, it will come in the end. Second technique.

I am satisfied with the result it looks ok with all the faults and mishapes it is what i could do at
the moment. And there are musch better plankings than this one.

It is my ship and thats what it is with all his or her inperfection. And most of all one side is musch
    better than the other side.

I will glue in little splinters here and there and go on with the build and leave the hull and planking
for what is was. A proces with a verry steep learning curve and fun to do.

Her is a picture of where I am now.

I little remark the wood provided by the kit is ok it is very brittle and some of the planks for the second planking split easy.

All in all clinker planking can be done with the wood of the kit.

Gregor it looks great. Your build is very nice, and a great reference for me. The port lids are superbly and very well done as the rest of the ship.
    Looking forward to your rigging.

Hello Sherbourne loggers and all the others. I have a question about cannon rigging. Here is a picture of a cannon aboard a ship. The question is, because I can not recollect where a got it, is this correct for English war ships. I find the rigging easier to do then other riggings.

This is the cannon in question.

Thank you Jan, Tony and Kester for the answers you gave. The matter is simple I have to do the rigging and all the small knots to get it right. ok in due course we will see to that. And of course I should have looked in AOTS Cutter Alert which is on my pc..

After a lot of careful cluing sanding and woodworking with model knifes the hull is nearly finished the ports are open. It is all in all a satisfactory thing to look at. I did the best I can do for now but learned a great deal, next time will be different for now it is good to see that she is coming along. After a bit of painting we will see what to do with the deck have to do a bit of study about that one.

Well, Tony, we either have to learn the art of sailing or follow one of the masters. But I really don’t know yet what I will do rigging-wise. There is much to do on deck before it comes to that.

One thing I started around Christmas I can share now: Last September we had a small discussion about gun port lids. It was then that I decided to make my Sherbourne looking a bit like the cutter Fly.
My lids are made of 2mm walnut strips, with copper hinges. I utterly failed to make cleats (I even tried to make tiny cleats from 0.3mm eyelets…), so I contacted Dafi (of Victory fame) and bought a brass sheet full of rings, hooks and cleats. They will last me a very long time.

All lids are shown in an open position; even the two at the bow – when I closed these ports, the too thick upper gunwale was really standing out very clearly.  This has the advantage that there was no need to make actually working hinges (what an excuse!).
Of course, my gun ports have no inner frame, so a very simple board would do here. I googled a lot of gun ports, where I found many different types even on a Victory, and in the end I decided – simply for aesthetic reasons – to file around three edges to make the lids “lighter”.

I also made a very simple jig, which I put in the gun ports before gluing the lids to the hull.

There were many dead ends and discarded pieces, but I’m quite happy now. Old mistakes came around to bite me, though: The curve of the hull does not exactly match the curve of the capping rail, so not all the lids open to the same angle (even with a little bit of cheating). And even worse: In my early days I did not pay enough attention to the upper end of the bulwark patterns that came with the kit. In fact, I found them quite elegant at the time, like a car from the 1970. But now the lids are showing clearly that the rails before the chains lie higher over the gun ports than aft of the chains.

At the moment my lids are defying gravitation, but I can live with that, at least for a few more days.
    Cheers,
    Gregor
