Work continues on the launches.  I will be ready for paint soon.

the walls and doors got glued in place

the roofs seem like there are going to be difficult.  So in typical fashion I procrastinate by moving on to the last 3 launches with ors.

these are coming out pretty good though. 🙃

I have finished the base.  I am not totally satisfied with it but it will do for the time being.  The base is marble and the edges were roughened up.  The pedestals are turned from pear and drilled to accept a threaded rod which screws into a captive nut in the keelson.  Thanks everyone for following this five year epic journey.

I  know I have been going slow lately.. I just haven’t had a lot of time lately.
I started by bending boxes and gluing them in place  minus one box.

oh there you are! I was worried.

I bent  all of the stairs I would need, though  I don’t know if I’m going to use them yet.

Next is to glue all the doors minus one because it  got sucked into a black hole never to be seen again.

then the hatches got glued in place.

And that’s where I am at right now. It’s a long weekend so hopefully I can get more done.

Work on the launches continues slowly.
I cut out every piece I need for all launches leaving me with one less PE sheet and a bigger scrap heap.

this is basically what I have to do with the PE

like the other launches I started with the rudders

Then I started with the PE.
Folding tiny boxes and gluung in place etc.

Hello All and thanks for the coments! Really appreciate all of them...

I am still working with the main wale and I´ve started with the gun ports. Pretty tough stuff, measuring, chiseling, trying with one piece repeating again the same piece...

I have also make a pdf with the camber of the lower deck beams. I need to Know the space between the floor of the hold and the lower deck beam to start making the bulkheads of the different "rooms". I also need to put all the hooks and breast and mast bases so I´ll be working a lot these days.

Richard! I have been doing a "research" looking for good plans for a longboat, but nothing arround is relaible to me. I guess I will have to redraw one plan out of a AOS book or something.

    here are some pics...

I use a little mirror just to ensure that the plank is true to the frames.

This was my first attempt. Gun port #8. I did a little bit os surgery cause I did the sarf too low on the upper beam.

Using a square pine stick of wood is "must be". It really helps a lot.

I used a clamp to avoid damaging the frames while I am sanding the frames. (up or down)

Even with all the "care" one put on sanding there is always gaps, at least on my work. I glued small chips of wood, let´em dry and then trim them with a blade. All of this will be sand of course.

    Good luck!

    Daniel.

Hola Amigos! (put it mexican accent like in the movies)

Well... It took me almost one month.

The worst part has been to remove all the patterns and PVA glue from the frames. I did it using just water and a brush wetting the frames (three or four at a time. Then with an x-acto blade I scrapped the glue or the pattern working extremely carefully trying not harm the wood...

here are some pics. Not in order.

I have printed out the stern timbers and the lights. That´s where I am going to move on in order to make the main wales. I am kind of following Wang´s log.

    Happy Sunday!

    Hello all!

Here´s where I am on right now. In order to lay all the frames I have so far, I need to do the keel. Here are the pieces marked with pencil.

It has reminded me someway the work I did back in 2011 with the pillars and the joist in my house. It´s amazing how things changed working from 1:1 to 1:48.

    still alive!

same method, there´s only 23 more frames to do, from A till W!

    Good luck to all.

The hardest frames have been #28 and #27. I
repeated twice #28 and maybe I´ll have to repeat the portside fame again. As
you can see only #27 is shaped an beveled… we´ll see if I have to repeat this
    too.

I will follow what Druxey said to me as the
    Bible:

    “If I can recommend
not getting too enthusiastic about bevelling the frames before erecting them.
It is an unpleasant surprise when fairing up the hull later to discover you
took a little too much off earlier!”

The rest of the frames were pretty easy to
fit. I am using a ribband to understand more or less the shape of the
    hull.

Have a good weekend. Let´s rebuild our logs!!

    Daniel.

I started work on the first four  launches today.   This is the fun stuff I love to do. The first thing I did is drilled out the portholes, 24 in all.

    next I take these pieces.

fold  up the two tabs towards the rear.

then  slide the two tabs into two slots on a corresponding peace.

    I did that four times

Now alot of bending coming up.

That is all for now.   Did I use the word corresponding in its correct context?

Airbrushing makes all the difference for me.  If I had to brush on paints the bismarck would not be the same. Some people do awesome with just a brush. I'm not one of them lol. 😕

    Hello all!

Still waiting for the answer about the question of the mizzen mast... Druxey, Mark, Jürgen... and all!

    Anyway,

Here´s a pic of the Triton taked on June 18th 2014

And here´s a of how she have changed.

I´m pretty happy cause now I can see the "final" shape of the ship. Cutting the frames was kind of a nightmare... almost everything started to crack so I have had to quote every single piece with a pencil an then stick them to the frames with tape or to see where I have to re-glue...

Hope to work some more on Easter!

Hello helllo, Here are the pics...

This part has been the "trickiest" (till now...) to built. I repeated them 3 times. I had no such thick piece of wood so I ended gluing to 5mm planks. Then I sanded it. I have left all the pieces 4mm thick because on the plan look pretty thin to me.

I finanally found the trick, specially due to Jürgen´s log (Thanks for that J!!).  2 leveled ribbands (2.5x5mm) to fit the posts.

With the ribband and those clamps (not very fancy) It´s easy to set the post and see where you have to sand less or more.

    Starboard.

Port side. The curve is very nice.

Now, another good one. I glued a 20x20mm pine block meaussuring the correct distance from the last frame till the outter edge of the post. 52mm. I ensured the level of the block. Somehow is like actually building a jig.

After the port and the startboard posts were glued I moved the pine block 3mm out. All the post comform a curve, they are not straight aligned. You can also take this measure out of the plans. I also marked the block with the situation of all the different posts.

Before to put the inner posts I started with the framing on both sides. Again the ribband was extremly useful...

Last pic, I marked the gabs down for the other posts. Now It´s all done. I ´ll post the pics later.

    Hello all  annd happy days!

Some pics... i´ll try to add some words tomorow. Here´s 2:15 in the morning... back from the same pub with old good friends like the other day... For me is still satuday...

The scotch tape stuck to the hull. I draw a rough line with pencil.

I put it on a paper and stick another layer of scotch tape so as not to erase the pencil.

I glue the "wood pattern" to another piece of wood with PVA. leave it dry for 12-24 hours clamping both. By boiling them the pieces will separate almost inmediatly and you can remove the PVA glue with a sharp blade like butter.

I set the piece just to see where I have to sand more or less the scarf. I will not glue the whole clamp till all the different pieces are done.

this pic is just to "know" if the platforms are aligne and level. I have not thousands but hundreds of "control pictures" that help me to see if I´m working in the right direction. what a camera can see is sometimes much more accurate than the human eye.

Hope you have had a good weekend!

Hello and happy Monday! (Written in the morning)

After finishing the aft platform for the fish and the spirituous drinks I am moving to do the magazine. I have been thinking a lot during the construction of this platform. With all that amount of pieces and mortises to be done I´m going to “cut” a little bit the project cause I´m not sure if I´ll end it in 2018…

Anyway I have redone the magazine plan this morning. The big difference is that I have divided the magazine boxes in four instead of five. I am not sure if I am going to make the cabins so I´ll attach two plans, one with the structure and the other with the beams and the plant of the cabins… I´m much more interested in the structure than the inner rooms.

    Here is the pdf´s.

    .- no cabins: Decks_fore_popa_plattform_V02_ok.pdf

    .- with cabins: Decks_fore_popa_plattform_V02__cabin_ok.pdf

Joss here´s the pic about those tricky pieces of the LwDeck clamps. They have been unglued for almost a week and they have held the shape.

Monday bloody afternoon Monday! (U2) could be a version..))

Afternoon, I have finished the platform. The result is totally awful on the joints. A disaster.

I will repeat the whole piece. Will not work again with that backward method. What works for someone does not always work for everyone. You go totally blind on the visible side. That´s it. That´s the question. To be or not to be… Three days to the trash bin.

I want to see the glue going into the carlings and them going into the ledges and the ledges into the beams.

    Anyway here´s the pics...

I´ll go this way. mortices in a 3x2mm sq timber can be done and I wil work seeing the whole piece from above.

    Hi Hi Captains!! And All!

Winter has come. Best place to stay our workshops… minus ten today in Soria. Uff!

Back here in Madrid and the platform pieces done. All set but not glued.

Mark, those tricky pieces have changed a little bit, I´ll post some pics tomorrow. I wanted to do the deck clamp with scarfs so I unglued the stuff and cut the scarfs.

Joss, I guess the secret it´s just to let the piece dry and dry. I did leave it for 24 hours and it holds the shape perfectly. Next time I´ll put some wood spacers between the peace and the nails. The pin has “harmed” the timber and I have had to sand it. For the camber beams I will cut them with the scroll saw but for this the steam has worked for me.

Here are just two shots of the set

    Arrgh!

Sometimes while you are posting,,, and you have attached all the pics and write everything… suddenly inet says “no” and all the work and effort go to the trash bin.Anyway, we are just dealing with ceros and ones not with wood.

Thanks very much Pete! Nice place you live. I have just checked it out on google maps and looks beautiful. Lots of forest to make model ship building or Bourbon barrels…

Christian!! Where are you?! How is the HMS Pegasus going?

Sometimes one feels so alone here in the “Complete Model” forum…

Here´s the work done so far during these two last days.

As you can see the top beams (4x4mm) at the ends of the frames were pretty helpful to glue the limber strake.

Here´s a shot of the two strakes glued. Took me two days. Meanwhile I was cutting more patterns, studying the plans and sanding the hawse pieces.

And here is where I am moving on… the fore and aft platforms. I have to buy a small level to ensure the platforms are leveled. It is a device quite expensive. Made in Japan.

Hope to post more tomorow. Fingers Cross.

    Hello All!

As I said, I was going to make a "practicum" about the Hawse frames but I dropped the idea. I´m not an expertto do so.

Instead I´m going to put a bunch of pics that I hope will speak by themselves... There we gooOOO!

    Just checking.

One pair sanded and the other one not.

The angle in my model against the -W- frame was 26º so I sand a piece of pine to put it against my tilt sand table.

All rough sanded. I will add the 5th one later on.

Starting the sanding. Pretty pretty slow and always checking. When i say slow is slow and slow...

Checking the outside fit. the interior is not still faired.

The inner side was much more easy than I expect with the minidrill.

Checking again. Did I say it? wood is patient like some body says...

and that´s it till now, still the portside to be done...

    Best wishes and happy thanksgiving!!

    daniel.
