Thanks Patrick- these little bits seem to go a little easier than I thought, and they turn out ok for my first try.  One thing I'm definitely going to rethink is the rigging line- I'll probably switch to cotton or something less shiny/more authentic than the synthetic that came with the kit.  I want a softer, more natural feel for the rigging, not the stiff/plastic feel of the nylon stuff.

Especially with how my "blackened" parts keep turning out- more of a dark rust than true black, so I want the rigging to reflect that look and feel.  Clean (as clean as I can do anyway), yet worn/broken in.

I'm also thinking of a simple way to make the hammock rails, with minimal or no soldering...  maybe just some bent brass strips, etc...

    Hi Richard
I was able to get this kit on e-bay a few years ago, luckily for cheap as these kits are usually the victim of a huge import tax in the US. At any rate I'm watching your build with great interest. Allow me to recommend a few books to aid you in the future should you get hooked on this hobby( by which I mean art form - there I said it) Crothers- the American Built Clipper Ship
                                      Petersson -Rigging Period Ship Models
Davis - The Ship Model Builders Assistant, and, Ship Models and How to Build Them
last but not least, Harold Underhill- Masting & Rigging the Clipper ship, and, Plank-on-Frame models volume 1 and 2
Most of these titles are still in print and really inexpensive. The last author/title is really great. The author was British and (belive it or not) was in both World Wars evidently as a combatant!!! - he includes some cool stories with the instructional dialogue-great fun!!!
I'm a university history instructor so.... I like the books.
Anyway great job on the ship so far - I believe your doing everything right - a minor miracle for a first build!!!
       thanks

Regarding the rudder assembly, see pictures below.

I attached both the rudder stock and the rudder to the stern post. I guess this is not the proper way to do it, but the result came out well and I am happy. However, the rudder is glued solid and will not be able to swing.

Please note that I forgot to cut the small slots above the rudder hinges, not allowing for the rudder to come off during overhaul.

Figuerres - did you have any problems with the length of the laser-cut keel length? I bought this kit and while planning the build, I found the laser cut centre-keel was 4mm shorter than that showed on the plans. The slots for the bulkheads also didn't correspond with the plans.

Initially, I thought it was caused by the plans not being copied correctly - I.e. the x dimension was not correct in proportion to the Y dimension of the plans.

I mailed the manufacturer and included photos of the discrepancy asking them if they could send me new plans which were copied in the correct ratio. Within one day Model Shipyards had replied saying that the plans were correct but that there was a problem with the dimensions of the keel and that they would be sending me a new one.

    Awaiting their package.

I was just wondering if this was a one-off error or whether it was more prevalent in a batch of kits?

I will be following your log closely, as I am very much a newbie to this!

First off I am not the best person to ask this. But let me see if I can help some. You got to use the plans. Then use the body plans to get the hull and then you can go on from there. This isn't shown in any books or videos. I was taught this by a good friend who gets on line with me every few weeks, and I always make sure I record everything he shows me and go from there. You also have to learn how to make planes ( not air planes ). You get your shape of the hull from the plans for the ship. The ship I am working on is the Confederacy, which there is no framing plans for, so it had to be made. This picture here you can see the framing plan or part of it.
