Hi Ulises. I am just about finished with the first planking. I received the kit from another modeler who had laid the keel and started work on the decking. He had also installed the gunports and some of them were a little bit askew. So two of the forward gunports on my model will have closed doors ( due to rough seas :-) ).

I did submit a few photos as a start to a build log, but I'm not much of a photographer and, frankly, the first planking does not look that good, I have some low spots that are going to need filler. I am going to try to make the first planking as good as possible to make the second planking go a little smoother.

This was a great demonstration and I agree with Jason. I am also building the Badger, but am only at the second planking stage. I tried furling a sail on my last build, but didn't trim it enough and ended up with too much bulk. Your work looks great.

I know I created a lot of work for myself. We are having a heat wave this weekend which will render yard work ill-advised, so I will have time to try and make this thing right. I will not proceed until I have corrected the problem and I can press on with pride.

Very nice work, Richard. When you used thread instead of brass wire on the stirrups did you stiffen them or keep them natural? They look good.

Hi Richard,

I know I can make it look decent and also prepare it for the second planking with sanding and filler ( I thought of using Spackle ). It's just that I thought my second attempt at this would go better than the first. Silly me, the kit is different, but I'm still the same.

Well, I've got a little bit more done on the first planking. I'm disappointed in the outcome so far as it looks like I have a ton of work to do to dress this up for the second planking.

Well Clare, that looks great! Your persistence certainly paid off in a handsome way.

I spent the last few evenings just happily sanding the different bevels and stern area from the bearding line to the stern post. I thought I was ready to start planking, but I was wrong. I set a batten along the side to check everything out (previous battens were at the bow and stern)and found two bulkheads were too short. I had to add more material. Rather than using several 1X4 mm pieces, I shaped a 2X4 piece. I just needed a 1X4 piece on the port side. Now some more sanding!

Clare, The plans call for not only removing the top of the filler block, but all of the bulkhead tops after the "gunport pattern" has been installed. On one build log, however, it looks like the tops were left on and painted.

Sometimes a minor update is all we can do. Great work on the anchor and pump. What other color do you think you should have used on the pumps? Just curious, as I might have used black as well.
