1942 - Navy Amphibious Task Force lands Marines on Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands in first U.S. land offensive of World War II.

1947 - The Kon-Tiki expedition headed by Thor Heyerdahl, which had carried a six-man crew aboard a balsa wood raft from Peru 3,770 nautical miles across the Pacific Ocean, crashed into a reef in at Raroia in the Tuamotu Islands on a Polynesian archipelago after being at sea for 101 days since 28th April.

2005 - Russian Priz AS-28 mini-submarine, with seven crew members on board, is rescued from deep in the Pacific Ocean by a British Scorpio-45 rescue sub.

1815 - Napoleon Bonaparte set sail for exile on St Helena

1921 - The ship Alaska bound for San Francisco met with tragedy. In the fog the ship hit a rocky ledge twice. The boilers blew up as a result, blowing a lot of its passengers off the decks and out into the icy ocean. One hundred and sixty-six people were saved off of the vessel, but thirty-one were missing, and 28 were dead. The ship, Anyox, rescued the survivors, but risked the rocky reef in the fog.

1972 - Women authorized for sea duty in the U.S Navy as regular ship's company.

2000 - Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley is raised to the surface after 136 years on the ocean floor and 30 years after its discovery by undersea explorer E. Lee Spence and 5 years after being filmed by a dive team funded by novelist Clive Cussler.

American explosive device made by David Bushnell attatched to the 'Turtle' was used to attack HMS Cerberus(28), Cptn. J. Symons, at anchor off New London, CT. It actually blew up a schooner astern of the frigate, and killed several men on board. This was the first vessel ever destroyed in such a manner.

1936 - Eskimos in Barrow, Alaska were in a state of starvation this summer when the usual whales and seals did not migrate to the northern seas. The ship called, “The Northland” rescued them as it was loaded with 41/2 tons of foodstuffs. 

2010 - The MV Sun Sea docks in CFB Esquimalt, British Columbia, Canada, carrying 492 Sri Lankan Tamils.

1592 - Imjin War: Battle of Hansan Island Admiral Yi Sun-sin decisively defeats the Japanese Navy at Hansan Island.

1886 - SECNAV establishes Naval Gun Factory at Washington Navy Yard.

1915 - British transport Royal Edward sank by German U boat kills 1000.
1942 - British Aircraft Carrier Eagle Destroyed.
1945 - Japan agrees to surrender; last Japanese ships sunk during World War II (15 August in DC).

1979 - A freak storm with force seven winds has decimated the Fastnet race with over 150 yachts still missing and at least 3 reported dead. The Fastnet is the last in a series of five races which make up the Admiral's Cup competition, the world championship of yacht racing.
The final death toll for the race was 15 and because many of the boats were not equipped with a VHF radio it was some time before the organisers were able to determine how many boats were damaged, after the race new rules were put in place that all boats were fitted with VHF Radio's and additional qualifications for competing in the Fastnet were put in place.

2006 - A Japanese oil tanker spilled around 4,500 tons of oil into the Indian Ocean on this day after hitting another ship on a rescue mission. The oil spill was quickly contained, but it still became the largest spill involving a Japanese oil tanker.

1864 - Off New England coast, CSS Tallahassee captures 6 yankee schooners.

1895 - Commissioning of Texas, the first American steel-hulled battleship. Texas served off Cuba during the Spanish-American War and took part in the naval battle of Santiago. Under the name of San Marcos, she was sunk in weapon effects tests in Chesapeake Bay in 1911. Her hulk continued in use as a gunnery target through World War II.

Start of 6 day engagement between a British squadron under Vice Ad. John Benbow and a French squadron under Jean du Casse along the coast of Colombia, off Santa Marta. Benbow vigorously attacked the French squadron, but the refusal of most of his captains to support the action allowed du Casse to escape. Two of the captains, Richard Kirby, HMS Defiance (64), and Cooper Wade, HMS Greenwich (54),  were convicted of cowardice and shot.

1793

Toulon declares for the Royalist cause and men from the British fleet under Lord Hood occupy the defences.

HMS Minorca (18), Lt. Lawson, scuttled to block the entrance to the harbour at Port Mahon.

1797

HMS Penguin (16) captured two French brigs.

1801

British cutting-out operations at Corunna. Boats of HMS Boadicea (38), Cptn. Charles Rowley, HMS Fisgard(44), Capt. T. Byam Martin, and HMS Diamond (38), Cptn. Griffith, attacked enemy vessels in Corunna harbour and brought out Neptuno (20) a gunboat (1) and a merchant ship.

British cutting-out operations at Etaples. Boats of HMS Hound and HMS Mallard (12) set fire to a vessel loaded with pitch and tar which had been wrecked near Etaples some time previously. Six flat boats then came out of St. Valery and they forced them ashore. where they lay hauled up on the beach. 

Boats of HMS Jamaica (26), Cptn. Jonas Rose, HMS Gannet (16), Isaac Cotgrave, HMS Hound (14), HMSTigress (12), W. Aldus, and HMS Mallard (12) cut out 3 flat boats also near Etaples.

1810

Boats of HMS Sirius (36), Capt. Samuel Pym, cut out a French prize, the Windham, a British East Indiaman.

1813

HMS Laurestinus (24) wrecked North end of the Island of Abaco, Halifax.
