I heard an almost identical story during a recent visit to HMS Alliance, Royal Naval Submarine Museam, Gosport. A medical orderly having to carry out an emergency appendectomy onboard the sub. The guide described telling the story a few years ago to a tour only to find out that he was addressing the orderlies son.
