Model Shipways Fair American. I bought the kit on ebay in a bundle. I guess a guy was cleaning out his ship locker .Some parts are missing of course, but I think I can manage. Running into a major snag with the stern construction.I can't seem ro figure out what the side trim pieces are doing there and how to planking. So I put balsa filler blocks P/S, but it still looks goofy,, The plans are a bit unclear....I'm attaching a photo. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

I used carpenters glue so I can take it apart if I  need to...

I think your best go-to would be the build by JLong.

A lot of stern detail shown here:

Your model looks like the original builder decided a different approach than what the plans called for.

To get it right you may have to tear some of that out to do it right.

Do your plans include the detail like this, from the log I pointed to above?

There is an album in the MSW gallery with pictures of the original model that the kit is based on.

Those fillers do not match anything on the original model or the kit as designed. The edges of the transom extend out past the bulkheads.

The J Long build log was best. Showed a lot of stern detail...I think I  had it right, but it looked goofy to me especially with the trim pieces p/s. I sanded them down considerably so they didn't stick out as much.

The kit was purchased in a bundle from a guy cleaning out the ship locker.

2 boxes of wood planks etc, and 2 kits: Pride of Baltimore ( completed) and Fair American.  Parts are missing so I  have to purchase from Model Expo. I have the plans and the Ronnberg book.

I've had to take a six year hiatus from shipbuilding due to a quite serious motorcycle accident  which left me minus a leg. I feel like Captain Ahab with shipbuilding as Moby Dick.

So I  really appreciate this forum  and the assistance of other members.

So thanks, mates.

Thanks Greg for referring to my build.

Paul, looking at your build, I think the filler blocks are in the wrong location. The thicker/meatier part of the block should face inwards towards the sternpost, and the pointed end faces outward towards Port/Starboard.
I think if you take the starboard block and put it on the port side, with the pointier side facing port, and the opposite for the starboard side, it will be correct.
These blocks are meant to shape the transom to the sternpost.

Not sure if that makes sense, but I believe that is what is going on.

I will admit, that the transom 'shape' took some long term staring at the plans to get right. Some of the frames are tilted outwards just slightly, and it took me a while to really understand how it is constructed.

Good luck!
