Hello all,

This is my first post. I'm currently building the Amati felucca and had a question about the shape of the bow. The bow has a flat "face" (for lack of a better term)- see attached pictures. I've looked around the Internet and could not find any pictures of a felucca with a similarly shaped bow. Do you know if this bow shape is actually used on real ships or is it fictional and/or suited towards novice builders?

As an introduction, this is my 2nd wooden ship kit (and my first planked kit), so I definitely consider myself a novice. My first wooden kit was the Mini-Mamoli Evergreen (for which I used MSW quite a bit to figure out the rigging). I'm a transplant from styrene plastic airplane kits. Thanks in advance.

John

Welcome, nice start on your build! "Felucca" is a pretty wide-ranging category, but I also am not aware of any with a transom bow like that. The box says "Felucca 1887," do the instructions or box give any indication of what specific sort of felucca it's supposed to represent? Unfortunately many kits are inaccurate in various aspects. Nice-looking model, though, seems like a good introduction to planked hulls.

Welcome!  The text on the box refers to them (Feluccas) being used on San Francisco Bay, which is true I suppose.  But the type used there didn't look anything like the model on the box. The profile looks like a Greek Sacoleva, though these are round hulled (the model looks flat bottomed and slab sided). The blunt bow is very odd.

Thanks for the replies. Yes, internet images of San Francisco Bay feluccas all seem to show pointed bows and sterns. So maybe a bit fictional to make the kit easier for newcomers. I do like this kit as a confidence booster though!
