I am a complete novice, so to gain theoretical experience I have read several logs. Some modellers seem to leave the stern post until after the planking is complete, I would have thought it was a reminder of where the planks should finish, please what am I missing here and what are the advantages/diasadvantages?

Leaving the stern post off (usually only on kits) lets the builder get the stern planking lined up and sanded without damaging the stern post.  It's a builder's choice, really.

Thank you for this info, I can see the merits of doing this and it is something I shall consider on my next build. It is things like this that I like to know about rather than just blindly staggering on. Already pleased to have joined this forum. :D
