hey anyone use automotive pin stripe stickers on there boat? did it turn out ok,, im thinking about using a gold 1/8 pin on my 1/64 bluenose hull, I was going to clear coat over it too,, so you don't "Feel" it and so it don't look like a sticker.. anyone else try this instead of painting a stripe? thanks

I successfully used chart pack tape, available in hobby, craft, artist, and office supply stores, over 25 years ago to put the waterline on my Bluenose II.

It comes in lots of colors and widths as small as 1/64, just search "chartpak tape" for sources.

I did cover it with clear matte varnish, as well as the rest of the hull, and it has not come loose.

I think It is considerably easier to apply than trying to paint a stripe.

I generally paint the waterline color onto the hull first in a broad area either side of the waterline area, then lay the correct width of masking tape where I want the waterline to be. I spray the bottom color, then I mask that off leaving the waterline tape in place and masking on top of it. After that I just spray the topside color. Remove all the masking and you'll have a perfect hull and waterline without worrying about the pin striping tape peeling away at some inconvenient point in the future or having to build up a large layer of paint to camouflage the thickness.
