Is there a trick to painting brass chain to make it look like black anchor chain???  Every time I try to do it, I wind up with a big mess, paint clogging up the chain links, bright brass shining through the black paint, etc.  There must be some way to do it properly.  I can't have an 18th century ship with bright brass anchor chain.

Appreciate any help.

There is a substance that will turn brass black It begins with a K, but the name escapes me.

You soak the chain and then wash off with water, it is also used for blackening etch .
