Hudson Straits Umiak ca. 1885

Built based on Howard Chapelle's drawing of a Baffin Island Umiak ("Bark Canoes and Skinboats of North America," figure 172), with further details from Franz Boas' "The Central Eskimo" (1888) and Eugene Arima's "Report on an Eskimo Umiak Built at Ivuyivik, P.Q. in the Summer of 1960" (1963).

What a very cool subject and a really nicely done model!

What scale did you build this in and what did you use for the hide?

Exactly my questions above.

A unique subject well executed. I like the use of basic materials which harmonize well with the subject.

Thank you! 7/8"=1' The hide is a scrap of tanned deerskin.  Original would have been sea mammal rawhide.  Rawhide moves like crazy, and is liable to crush models (and even full-size craft) if the stitching doesn't tear first.  Will post a rawhide model sometime soon...

Ahh, another skin boat ... I not very often look around the gallery (I am more interested in the processes than the final products, I must admit ...), so I missed that.
