  1. Hello all, I am new to the hobby and the forums, and I am excited to be able to share my progress as I work towards my first complete build. A bit about me: I am entering my third year of law school here in Chicago, and I expect that this year will allow me some decent time to work on boats and develop skills before it is time to (re)join the working world. I grew up building plastic models with my dad, and approximately two years ago I started building again after a long hiatus. I picked back up with balsa aircraft, found I enjoyed working with wood more than plastic, and decided earlier this year that I would try my hand at model ship building. I grew up sailing on Lake Michigan and I spend a decent amount of time on the water, I figure there is no better way to pass the dreaded winter months here than working with wood and line. To that end, I have purchased a few books: Ship Modeling Simplified by Frank Mastini and Petersson's Rigging Period Ship Models. I also have supplemented the tools I already had from the airplane kits with a shipwright set from ModelExpo. I purchased the Model Shipways Armed Virginia Sloop but after reading over multiple threads here and the build logs on a few different websites I worried I would be setting myself up for failure by starting with that kit. So, like many others here, I purchased the 18th Century Longboat, and I will be building that before embarking on the AVS. It seems like build logs are recommended, even for beginners, so I plan to get one of those up and running in the next few days. I am excited to be a part of this group, and I look forward to learning from the many skilled builders here. Regards, Will
