Haha, I really do like this "squid". And nice paint work as well!

Thank you @Omega1234 for your response. Yes, a big part of the satisfaction of building a model is overcoming the difficulties. Many modellers are happy for their models to come together easily. Yet many of the same modellers would not part with the ones that were most challenging.

    Thank you @mtaylor, @KeithAug, @John Allen, @oneslim, and @BANYAN for your 'likes'.

Decided to take a break from making the boat. My mind was getting too preoccupied about the buoys and crane part of this model.

I needed an old unserviceable buoy which was found aground near the Wardell bridge. This storey will give reason for the CLEM-PETER to be in the vicinity. It's task is the pick up the old buoy and replace it with a new buoy somewhere downstream.

Had fun making this buoy. It looks like a giant squid. I have an image in mind that will use that appearance to its advantage in the diorama.

Used an old broken broom handle, red Biro casing, and thick copper wire.

@*Hans*, I have not seen Catweazle before, until now on YouTube. Very funny. Would like to have seen it in Australia. Also, thank you for compliment.

    Completed the boat.
The rigging string, as someone previously suggested, got pre-stretched since November (I think). I added weights to either end of a lenghth of string, and hung it over a door. Since rigging the boat, we had over a short period of time, both high and low humidity. Neither effected the tension of the rigging, so I am very pleased about that.

I really enjoyed building my first vessel. Though it is only a small boat, I have learnt a great deal from putting her together. This introductory exercise has increased my respect for model ship builders. It may turn out to become a new hobby for me.

I do not only hit the like button as many times as possible because this is a nice topic, but also really like all the electrics you are doing!

It's a bit like electrickery (with copyrights on this for Catweazle)

Well this is it, she is finished. Maybe to the left or to the right some things could be added or improved, but I consider her ready.  Last pictures:

made some loose stuff for on the deck. Maybe it doesn't belong there, but in the hold was no space anymore...

Main mast and its sail are (almost) ready. Some better pictures:

Another step in the proces - sails on the main mast are ready.

I'm almost finished with the Batavia:  have to do some last sails, some small work on the rudder, the canon lids and of course the flags.

Yesterday I did the first of the lids:

The foremast and its sails are almost ready - time to post some more detailed images.

These images however do also show the limitations I have as a shipbuilder - sorry for that!

In the meantime I received the sails back from the sailmakers workshop (my mom). I took some thin cotton sheet, impregnated this with diluted white glue - in which I had added some ocre paint to get a more "old" look.

Then at a width of 1 cm (which is 70 cm in real) the vertical stitches where made.

With a paper knife I have cutted the sail in the right shape and dimension and then started sewing a piece of rope around it.

    So far the result:

Rather dull work, doing the ratlines. And yesterday we had the Dutch footballteam playing against Spain (is this still called soccer in the States?) which made me a bit nervous (for no reason - after all). I couldn't sit still for a moment.

Took the opportunity to make some of the yards:

All the standing rigging is done now (or should be done - it could be I have forgotten something)

What remains are the ratlines....Nice job!

We take a beer on the fact that the highest point has been reached!  In Dutch this is called pannenbier!

I will not get any higher on the Batavia.

Next step - the lionfigure on the bow

I already had made the head of the lion - which some people thought was a dogs head.

This lionhead was glued onto the bow:

Then I sculpted the body of the lion on both sides of the bow:

Third step - extra manes to cover the gap between head and body:

And then some painting to make it more fearsome:

Again - photos are not of the best quality. When the model is finished I will make some more profesional images and post these.

With this modelling clay there are always some leftovers. Of course I can throw these away, but it comes handy that I still have some carving to make on the bow:

    - Some say its more like a dogshead
    - Some say it has flappy ears
    - Some say it looks a little bit like it.

    Decide for yourself:

    Sorry - wrong picture.

Another nice thing to make is the lantern.

You can buy some standard lanterns - but these didn't match my requirements.

So I started with sanding some wood in shape

Then sketched the under and upper part and carved the top:

With some clay made some ornaments on it - and slept a night over it.

But to be honest - I didn't like it - to round, to much not what I wanted.

Then I made a second version - more right up, but here I used to much glue - and it was much to big!

As you can see it is over 5 cm (2 inch) high - which means in scale 1:72 a 3,5 meter lamp.

    Fully out of proportion.

So I scrapped this lamp and started for the third time.

This is so far the result - an approx. 3 cm lamp which means in real life about 2,4 meter high. Still huge, but some more in the right size.
