    Thank you Anja
Planking is not ideal, but at first time it can be
Here I like to present a progress with body of a ship.
Here are bit differences specially at back part of a ship, where I used different wood and also other small differences, which you can see from attached pictures. Windows are completelly different, I added also steps for the highest deck, where is added also back shield. On the decks are parts maded from walnut wood.
Also I prepared different holes for anchor's rope (across a fore), where I add also wood rings (here is a wire, which waits for a anchor's rope).

These photos are close to actual state. Until yet it takes me 1,5 years from beginning (only few evenings per week I have a time for this). Quite a lot, but lot of time I waiting for additional wood parts, because shops hasn't all wood diameters on storage and everytime it took 2 months until delivering.

MarisStella.hr reacted to captainbob in HOGA (YT-146) by captainbob - FINISHED - 1:96 - SMALL - Navy yard tug
Wow!  It’s been almost a month since I’ve added to this thread.  Well I did a little more adding to the deck furnishings and details.   Those who have done a web search are sure to see more that could be added, but for now I’m going to call it finished.  As I said early on, years ago I had wanted to build the Hoga in a larger scale as an RC boat but that never happened.  This build was a “make do” so I could say I built it, but it is not the boat in the water I had dreamed of and I am not happy with it.  So it’s time to say, “Enough, It is finished.” and go on to other builds.   Here are pictures as it is now.  Good enough to put on the shelf.

Thanks Popeye.   Now here’s the rest of it.

I did not like this boat when I started it but the more I built the more it grew on me.  I titled it the Malabar Jr.  but I modified it so much that it is no longer a Malabar Jr. it’s just a yawl, Y’all.

    First the profile.

    And a bow shot.

I’m sure most of us have had that feeling, the build is complete but it just doesn’t feel right.  Well that’s what happened to me with the dory.  I decided I wasn’t finished with the dory build.  I had placed fishing items in the dory but it just didn’t feel complete.  I tried to start the little yawl, which is my next build, but I kept coming back to the dory.

Finally I decided to make it into a diorama.  To place the dory in the ocean, at home, as it were, where it spent most of its time.  Many fishermen used trawl lines but this fellow is fishing with a hand line.  I just seemed right.

I got a lot of help from several of you here at MSW.  But I especially want to thank Dan for taking me through it step by step.

            Dan, this one’s for you.

MarisStella.hr reacted to captainbob in Spray by captainbob - FINISHED - 1:48 - SMALL - the first boat to be sailed single handed around the world
    Hi all,

Years ago I read "Sailing Alone Around the World" by Joshua Slocum, and in January 2012 I decided that I would build his boat, the "SPRAY", in 1/48 scale POF with bent framing. The way Slocum built it.  I started asking questions on this forum, and I want to thank all those who answerd with help.  The information on this forum is invaluable.

Then the research began.  In the first chapter of his book, Slocum said he was given an old "fishing smack".  So I looked for fishing smacks of 1800.  About when his was built.  Someone suggested the "Emma C Berry" for framing, so I hunted for information on that boat.  I also gathered as many plan drawings of the "Spray" as I could find.  About five.

Now it was time to check and redraw the plans.  The first thing I discovered was that ALL the plans had errors.  Things like, the shear and section views would agree and the shear and the plan views would agree, but the width of the plan was no where near the same as the width of the sections.  Of the drawings I had, the drawing from the appendix in the book was the closest.  So I traced that into an old copy of AutoCad and worked out the errors.

Checking the fishing smacks plans had shown a frame spacing of from 15" to 22" I chose 18" for framing the Spray.  I drew a section at each frame.  I offset a line .031" inside to subtract the 1.5" planking Slocum used.  The frames will be 3" X 5" so again I offset another line .062 inside the planking for the frames.  This gave me the section lines for the plug I will carve to shape the frames.

I am going to plank only half the deck and deck houses so I can show the insides, taken from the sketches in Slocum's book. (See below)

When the Lettie was discovered after being abandoned the masts, bowsprit, and the windlass had been taken off the boat and mostly disassembled so I am not completely sure this is the correct windlass.  I got this design from Chapelle’s “The American Fishing Schooner”.  I think it will do.  It is mounted on a temporary base and I will be taking it all apart and painting some of the parts before mounting it on the boat.  I have to admit I had a lot of fun with the linkage.  I wish I had kept time on this I figure somewhere between 12 and 20 hours.

I thought today would be a good day to work on Keel # 4 , I started by refitting the Centerboard.  Then I cut out the Bowsprit Blank, marked it now its ready for shaping. I then made the inside drop board rails , and installed them. I then cut out the seat, wich I made out of 2 pieces so that the seat fits under the Deck. Next I ripped down more of the 1/32" birch ply for the decking . I then laid it out the seats in the same fashion as the cockpit floor and fish well deck. I then installed the seats and added a pre bent pre stained strip cut it to fit aft of the seat and match the cockpit coaming . Here are the results

On Keel # 4 Today, I started by shaping the Mast and fitting it. I decided to add a square piece of Birch Ply as a Mast step. I then stained the Birch on the Cockpit face , Cabin entry and the companion way rails a Cherry . On the Cockpit floor I made a new Hatch cover ( I didnt like the first one ) Laid out the Deck for the cut outs ( I will do the Fish well deck the same as the Cockpit floor ) Then Painted the Cabin top a gloss white. Here are the results

I have been slow to post lately for two reasons.  First, it is spring and I have been out chasing bugs and flowers.

The second reason is that I have been stalling.  I have a lot of oak to cut and since my Admiral was kind enough to order a Byrnes saw for my fathers day "surprise" I have waited rather than struggle with my old saw.  The Byrnes will arrive tomorrow so the updates should increase.

I have finished the added bulkheads and the planking supports attached to the bulkheads.  The next step is a day of steaming and bending of the oak caps for the bulkheads and the deck planks.

This is a quick stain test using Minwax Gel Stain color Aged Oak.  I have been looking for a stain that would not be as dark as the ship after it was buried for 1000 years (walnut) but not as new looking as, say, golden oak.  I ran into a sample of this aged oak at a local store and decided to give it a try.  I hope that this gets the Vivian seal of approval   .

The plank set on the left has ebony stain on one side to simulate caulking, the center group has nothing and the right group has black Sharpie on one side.  I am not sure that it makes much difference.  The Sharpie was easier to control than the stain.  Pencil did not show up at all.

The piece at the bottom of the picture is the same plywood as used for the hull planks.  It matched better than I expected.

    Hello Everyone.
Today is a gloomy day in SW Florida.  We are entering our rainy season  (hurricane season too) so it rains about every day for an hour or two and then the sun comes out strongly and in a few minutes it looks like it never rained. But today is a cloudy all dayer and I don't expect the sun will shine at all.  But inside the Shipyard it's as bright as can be.  I'm happy to say that the last of the mizzen yards have been rigged to the ship which completes all the mast yards and so it's on to the rigging of the bowsprit.  I hope to start that tomorrow.  The internet is a bit slow so I only have one photo to attach.  When the others arrive I'll edit this log and attach them.  I hope veryone is having a great ay.  Best,

A couple of other photos just arrived..........

    Good evening everyone.
A little more to report on this late afternoon here in Florida.  Today I have mounted the Spiritsail topsail; yard.  The directions are in the manual but an awful lot of studying is required to understand them.  There was no problem in placing the parral bead sling as it went very well.  However, trying to understand the making and installation of the two 3mm block halyard was another story for me.  I wish that the kit manufacturer would be more explanatory and provide a few decent diagrams or photos...no such luck!  BUT, that's where MSW shines and Gil and David's sites have come to the rescue once more.  So the outcome is the yard is attached, photos provided, and tomorrow I'll tackle the Spiritsail Yard  (The big one.)  Please remember to put your mouse on the photo for captions....and have a great evening..

    Another minor update.
This time I decided to experiment a bit with my “woodcarving talents” ..
    Note .. I have practically non-experience with woodcarving ..

After having darkened the ornaments on the supplied metal plate it shows that they are not very detailed.

So again a bit creativity is needed to produce something more detailed.
The easiest part seem to be the lower part of it, so I started out with these.

The choice of wood I used:
It needed to be a light color and without much grain, the obvious choice would be boxwood ..
But finding boxwood for a reasonable price doesn’t seem to be that easy so, I decided to give it a try with abachi.

    The tools I used:
    - a very sharp scalpel (blade 11)
    - a printout of the ornament on a sheet of transparent paper
    - electrical iron for transferring the printout on to the wood
    - a magnifier glass with light

I started out with drilling holes for the openings and carved roughly the edges

Followed by carving the complete outline of the ornament

After this I gently removed wood from the top and bottom to simulate the up/under “snake like pattern” I had pictured in my mind.

And "finally" starting to round all roughly cut edges into smoothly curved lines

It turns out for me that starting carving with abachi wood was not a bad idea after all.
It is a soft but firm wood and the grains are not that visible, but most important I find it very easy to shape with a scalpel

..I must admit that I’m pleased with my first results..

I've now made and installed the first part of the waist deck framing. As with the quarterdeck and forecastle deck framing, the beams, carlings, ledges and hanging knees are boxwood and the lodging knees are cherry. In addition, this portion of the decking required support stanchions. These were made from square boxwood strip with the round portions done with files and sandpaper. As always, the wood was finished with Wipe-on Poly. I am now working on the remaining waist deck framing.

It didn't take too long to remove the copper plates and excess glue and then to repaint as necessary.

Started coppering again tonight, using the my lighted magnifying glass to check each plate. I'm very happy with the installation this time around.

It has worked out fitting time is 2 minutes per plate at the moment, which includes the shaping time of some of the tiles, this time will reduce quite a bit when I'm not having to cut the plates.

I plan to finish the first two rows completely before moving down to the next 2 rows this time and when complete move on to the next 2 rows etc.

The last tile on the 2nd row does look slightly out of alignment on the photos, but this is an optical illusion as it correct in real life.
