    Hello,

sorry for delay with updates, I was bussy with new job and nearly no time for modelling... have not much time to work at the Sphynx, so here only few images showing last changes.

Last beams and carlings on forecastle and the door at kooking plase:

Then glued inboard planks on the taffrail, and last strake at the f'caslte bulkhead:

Mounted all Cannons, glued waterweys and margin plank on f'castle:

Gratings and coaming are dry fitted now

Since the last posting there have been revisions! The sweeps were discovered to be sized for a single-banked boat not, as in this case, for a double-banked one. So, a new set of 12 sweeps have been made, 15' 0" as opposed to 19' 0". I also took this opportunity to paint the dolphins on one side the correct way up! Now, at the risk of incurring the wrath of the moderators, I'd like to mention that the full story, along with various techniques of making small open boats will appear in a full-color book shortly. Stay tuned!

Again, my thanks to all who contributed to this log. You helped to make a better model.

    Thank you druxey .
Now I started the most complicated part of the model for me - the galion. In this moment is completed only the "easy" part - lower and upper cheeks

    Thank You....

Its just a matter of slowing down and taking your time.   Not rushing is a huge part of it.  I think everyone can do the same but I see so many folks running through their projects like they are in a race.  Should parts not fit correctly...throw them away and do it again.   It took me about 2 hours to paint the stern after making the seats and adding the cleats.  It took me about 1 hour to just paint one ladder after making it.  Many thin coats being careful not to get any dust on it.  Sanding carefully when imperfections and brush strokes take place.  The key in my mind is to just slow down....my best advice for any model builder.

Wow, thanks for the encouragement Elia!  I'm a big fan of your work --  ever since I first saw your Oneida on the old Dry Dock Models forum!

All treenails throughout were made with my trusty Jim Byrnes draw plate and the holes were drilled with my Dremel.  I know there were 6,500 in the hull, but I stopped counting when I moved inside to the bulwarks and deck, so I'm not sure what my total is now.

I hope you'll be posting pictures of your Oneida in the Gallery of completed ships here.  And hopefully you can recreate your Goddess build log too.

    Cheers,
    Robert

Richard thanks for the advice, you saved me from breaking some drill bits.  I did break one because I guess I wasn't going slow enough, though I thought I was.  What I finally did was when lowering the drill bit I would barely touch the surface with the bit until it bit into the copper then very slowly advanced the bit.  I found also that even though I scribed a mark at each hole location the bit would still wander somewhat.   I used plenty of 3 in 1 oil too.  Now I just need to find some tiny nails.

Drilled and all cleaned up                                                         Pre-bent the gudgeons to fit the hull.

I would like the thank everyone for all the 'likes' also.

Hello and thanks for warm words!

it's done now. I have fastened the stove on the deck. The cement is a bit darker now and looks better for me. The work on beams and knees go on further.

    Hi,

here the next update. I have made the base for the stove from 0,3mm wood strips, cut in squares. The first image show the cutting jig. Second image show some the "Stones" with a pencil line I mark before cutting, it's serve as direction guide by gluing. The "stones" are glued to 1mm plywood base.

To simulate the slate stone the plates are painted with diluted acrylic paint, then rubbed with pencil to give the surface "stone look"

It is blackened... was all other as easy, because the glue give a sort of patina around. after several cleaning and cleaning, blackening and re blackening it looks a little like wrong iron... here the result, I think, I can live with them...

and how it looks on model:

Capping Rail and Catheads – completed

Well, I feel like this is a huge milestone!  The work that I had to do on the cats and the capping rail is done.  Now it’s up to Father Time to do his bit – that is, darken the cherry to match the bulwarks!  (When I finished the bulwarks a year and a half ago, they were about as light as the current shade of these newly finished components.)

Proper alignment of the rail while gluing in place was greatly aided by the holes drilled during the initial fitting.  I could get the section of the rail ready as shown, apply glue to the bulwarks top, and just slide it down into place.

Then it was just a matter of making lots and lots of sawdust to get them to their final shape and size, drilling the rest of the holes, treenailing, and applying tung oil.

I used pencil on both plank ends at the scarphs for caulking.  Maybe a bit too evident now, but once the cherry darkens they should be more subtle.

For some reason I really like the jointing that I decided to use where the side rail meets the stern.  I don’t know if it’s necessarily “proper” for that junction, and it’s just a small thing, but it really made sense to me anyway.  Of course now I realize that it will be hidden once the boat davits are installed

I forgot to specifically photograph them, but the cathead supporting knees are at least partially visible in this shot.

And finally, a purely gratuitous shot from my favorite angle to showoff the lines of Mars ... ah, greatly enhanced by the capping rail to be sure.

Time now to finish the various deck fittings!!

    Cheers,
    Robert

    2nd Planking

Came out okay, except the run-of-the-planks at the bow is completely wrong.  About three quarters of the way in, the "light came on" and I realized what I should have been doing!  However, I decided to press on.  (That decision still haunts me, as the bow planking really bugs me, but it's way too late to turn back now, almost 5 years later!)

Next time I will definitely plank the wales first.  Also, I just recently found a fantastic tutorial on planking that Chuck has posted in the MSW Database (find it under Articles and Downloads on the MSW Home Page)  It is an excellent guide on how it should be done!
