    Hi Anja
Well I do cheat a bit in that the instructions on the Italian site are six months infront of those here in GB.It gives me a preview of whats to come and how little of the original partwork I will be using. To be honest I am changing so much that the instructions become almost redundant.
I include a few pics of progress to date.I am concentrating on one side at a time to relieve the tedium of constantly treenailing. You will notice the alterations to the upper gunports. These have been altered to accomodate the decorations. The kits supplied directions  are incorrect.I have acquired some black pre dyed boxwood strips to plank the upper hull where the ornamentation sits. This will cover all the alterations I have to make in this area, to create a more accurate representation of the original.
    Kind Regards Nigel

Hi everyone, especially Piet, Bob and Igor and everyone else that 'Liked' Rainbow's progress so far.

Well, tonight a major milestone has been reached!  Earlier today I went to the local Art Supplies store.  I showed them all the info and advice that I received from Igor, Leo-zd, Row, Piet, Dennis, Michael, etc about the coloured pencils.  They agreed that the 6H graphite pencil was indeed the best to use for the lines and the 2B graphite was best for the shading.  I was glad and promptly bought the pencils.  I also bought some drafting film to draw the templates for the sails.

A short while ago, using the graphite pencils, I drew the templates of the sails onto the drafting film.  The results are shown in the photos.  Doesn't look too bad, I must admit.

I'm still eagerly awaiting Igor's packing film, but in the meantime, at least I've got the temporary templates done.  I'll still experiment with Leo-zd's and Dennis' methods in the meantime.

Anyhow, here're the photos of the temporary templates.

    Cheers

    Patrick

Hi everyone and thanks especially for all your Advice, Likes and compliments.

I've progressed a little bit on the rigging (my favourite bit...not!!). The latest photos are provided below. Admittedly, the rigging looks really messy at the moment because it's all pretty much temporary. Still lots of work to go.

    Cheers

    Hi everyone

A quick update.  Before the rigging commences proper, I needed to add a few of the last details whilst access to the deck is still possible.  These are, the rear deck hatch (shown in the open position), the foredeck hatch to the focsle (Bob if you're reading this, I finally found the hatch!) and the life raft.  The life raft is the funny white rectangle with black lines on it which is located immediately behind the skylight on the mid-deck.

Finally, on the mast, I also added the radar dome.

I hope you enjoy the photos.

    Cheers

    Hi everyone!

Thanks for all your comments and feedback. Greatly appreciated!

The latest update and photos shows that I've made some progress with the bit I hate the most....rigging.

Some of the deck hardware, eg blocks, etc have been installed and I've made some attempts to run some rigging through them in order to see how they'll all work. The bendy mast has also been put in, albeit it may look too bendy, but don't worry, the back stay tension can be adjusted. It's all temporary at the moment.

I've also had a go at doing the railings (on one side of the ship only), at this stage. I'll do the other side later on.

I hope you enjoy the photos.

    Cheers

    Patrick

    Hi everyone

Thanks for all the Likes and comments, all of which are greatly appreciated!

The latest update is that I've had a go at the low foot rail that goes around the deck. On the real ship, the rail is low; perfectly designed for the crew to wedge/brace their feet against in a heeling / pitching deck. Given the tiny scale of my ship, I had to compromise (of course) as I couldn't make it exactly like the real railing, but at least I gave it a go!

Hope you enjoy the photos. All the best for the weekend and for those who celebrate Easter.

    Cheers

Hi everyone, especially those that left comments and Likes.

    All are greatly appreciated!

Progress has been a bit slow this week, however I've started to paint the mast and boom (more painting still to be done later).  I've also added two more handrails to the deck just forward of the mast, as well as the spinnaker pole on the foredeck.

A lot of time has also been spent doing the eyebolts in the deck and masts, in readiness for the rigging and sails, but these are too small for me to photograph.

Still more heaps more work to go, though.

I hope you enjoy the photos.

    Cheers

Hi Kees, Mike, Matija, Bob, Pete, Igor and everyone else for their Likes and support.

Well, tonight, I completed Rainbow's winch drums. On the real ship, these must certainly be pretty impressive pieces of machinery, capable of hauling the sheets in and letting them out. On my model, the best I could do is to shape some Aluminium rod to make them as close as possible to the full sized winches. However, at only 1.5 mm high, trying to make them exactly like the real thing is pretty difficult.

Never the less, I tried and I think they look alright. The photos below show these winch drums dotted around the deck.

    Hope you enjoy them.

    Cheers

Thanks for all your Likes, comments and compliments.

Tonight, I had a go at the ship's wheel and the tiny handrails above the main cabin's roof. I hope the photos can show these details clearly enough, but anyhow, here they are.

    Hope you enjoy the photos.

    All the best

    Hi everyone

Many, many thanks to everyone for all your comments, Likes and encouragement!

Over the past few days, Rainbow has gained a few things.  Firstly a rudder, then her auxiliary motor's propeller and most importantly, a brand spanking new mast and boom!!!!

The mast and boom, of course need heaps of work before they look the part, but it's a start.

I hope you enjoy the photos below.

    Cheers and all the best!

Hi everyone and thanks for your Likes, especially Mike, Anton, Bob, Michael, Nick, Matija, Mark and Piet for all your comments, advice and compliments.

I'm a much happier boy tonight!!!!  I made sure that I applied the masking tape and pressed it down firmly this time and it seemed to work far better.  There is only a little bit of bleeding which can be easily dealt with.

More importantly, the paint finish is smooth and shiny.  I've tried to show how good the gloss looks in the photos below.  I'm not sure if the camera has picked up the reflections bouncing off the gleaming hull well enough; but you get the idea.

Up on the deck, I've also added the gloss black cap rail, which highlights the slim and streamlined shape of the hull when viewed from above.

I hope you enjoy the photos.

    Cheers

    Hi everyone!

Many thanks for all your Likes and comments! They're all gratefully appreciated.

Last night was a milestone for two reasons. Firstly, I glued the deck to the hull (too bad if I left any detail off-oops!) because it'd be too late to add any internal stuff now. Secondly, I started to paint the hull - gloss black above and Matt red below the waterline. Whilst there's lots more painting, sanding and cleaning up to go (note the bleeding of paint where black meets red and on the gunwales above deck), before I can move onto other things like the mast, etc, but, at least two milestones have been met.

Her are the most recent photos.

    Hope you enjoy them!

    Cheers

    Hi everyone

Many thanks, as always to everyone who posted comments and Likes, i.e. Igor, Lawrence, Dennis, Matija, Mike, David, Cap'n'Bob, John and Row, etc!  They're all greatly appreciated.

Well, Rainbow's interior inches closer to completion.  Tonight I finished the navigation station which is occupied by the navigator when racing.  I've tried to show the navigation station in the photos below, but it's so small that'd you'd have to take my word for it! Trust me, it's there...it consists of a navigator's bench, a slanted work desk and some sundry shelving on the bulkhead wall above the slanted desk.

On the stern deck, Rainbow has a large hatch, which eventually will be glued in the upright position to show the interior of the stern.  at the moment, it's just temporarily shown in the upright position.

I hope you enjoy the photos, so far.

    All the best!

    Hi David and everyone

Well, as mentioned in my previous post, I've taken the advice of David (and heavily influenced by Dennis' earlier comment about the deck) and decided to add more deck planking.  The problem has always been a compromise between how much deck to leave exposed in order to facilitate viewing, as opposed to how much should be planked for aesthetic reasons.  Common sense prevailed and I've decided to plank the bow and stern decks, whilst leaving the remaining deck exposed wherever practical.

    Please see the photos below.

    Hope you enjoy them.

    Cheers

    Patrick
