Busy day in the shipyard!  I installed all the deadeyes and chainplates and covered the from edge of the channels with some cherry to finish them off.  I also glued the gun supports to the hull and assembled the swivel guns.  They were mounted (temporarily) on the starboard gun mounts.  There are just a few tasks left:  The horizontal portion of the catheads, finishing and rigging the anchors, and making the great cabin lights.  Almost done!

The ship will be mounted on the backs of some cherry seahorses fixed to a cherry base.  I still need to rout a profile on the base and glue the seahorses in place.  # or 4 coats of wiping varnish and it'll be done.

Very nice Dave, she'll have her place on the shelf very soon. Have you ever checked into resistance soldering? Very pricey, but I think that is the way to go. Here is the place www.americanbeautytools.com that sells them, daverow(here on msw) uses this and swears by it

    Hello Everybody..
It's Labor Day weekend and here's some pictures of a little more progress.  Forming the cabin was tricky for two ,main reasons:  the strip wood is of very small dimensions and getting the correct angle which was accomplished by laying wax paper over the plans and gluing the pieces together while in position.  The roof is a bit small but I'll fix that with some extension later on.  So far, so good..Now some pics...

I cut out 8 rosewood gun supports.  For the metal caps I used a 1/4" square styrene tube and glued strip styrene to each end.  I trimmed the styrene and cut of the caps.  I drilled a pilot hole in each.  They were then painted gunmetal color and glued to the gun supports.  I enlarged the pilot holes to 1/16" diameter and fixed 4 yokes in place.  The trunnions will be threaded through the yokes and guns and fixed with a drop of CA.  The 4 starboard supports will have guns, the 4 port supports will be gunless.

Ken:  The hand torch is really like a glorified butane lighter.  It works great with conventional solder, which melts at 450 degrees F., but it's hard to get the temperature high enough to melt silver solder, which flows at 1500 degrees F.  I had to train the flame on the joint for 2 minutes to get the silver solder to flow.  If you use propane and oxygen together, the flame is much higher in temperature than butane alone.  You need a regulator to mix the two gasses.  Ever wonder why they sell oxygen containers near the propane torches at big box stores? The photos show the hand torch I used, and the setup Bob Hunt uses for silver soldering from his practicum series.

The shipyard is reopening!  I attached the channels, although they have no finish yet.  As I hate metalwork, I've yet to complete the chainplates.  I drilled the hawse holes and formed the parts for the catheads.  They are next up to be installed.  Last, I wanted to add a mainsheet horse, but wasn't sure the size.  In the end I just made it as long as the partial planking on the cabin roof is wide.  I'm still procrastinating with the swivel guns.

    Thanks, Mike..
As I mentioned above I did see some of it in Chapter 8 but I didn't think it was complete.  But I believe I'll be able to do okay with what's available.  have a nice day,
    Jerry

    Hello Mike,
    Thanks for the visit.
As a matter of fact there is something I need some help with.  Bob's practicum is really working out well but every once in awhile I either miss something or can't find it.  I'm having trouble locating the construction of the aft railing system.  I see it in the photographs but can't seem to see it in the instructions.  I'm specifically referring to the railing on the transom and around each side to where it angles down to the cap railing.  I have read ahead through the next several chapters  but all I could find was a little reference near the end of Chapter 8 which I just started.
Any help will be much appreciated.
    Best,
    Jerry

I had to carve out the openings in the rudder a bit deeper to accommodate the hinges, which required refinishing the rudder afterwards.  So, with no more work I could do on that while poly dried, I turned my attention to the front of the boat, and got my bowsprit formed, and the holes for it and the anchor lines drilled, etc.  The rudder will need to wait for another day.

That is looking great!  Drilling big holes in the bow is always stressful.  They turned out perfectly.

Got my second set of hatch doors done.  Was much easier than the first one.  Next step will be fitting the rudder.  After many months I'm starting to see light at the end of the tunnel.

I was successful in my attempt to widen the door opening without destroying anything.  Full operation now. also widened the other hatch too in anticipation or the doors it doesnt have yet.

My front hatch is now completely done.  I went with hinged doors.   I don't have a full range of motion with them, but not much I can do about it now.  It's not like they'll ever be opened up anyway once finished.  These little hinges was I say about the most frustrating piece of work so far.

Hello all! In an effort to improve my log, I will start to explain how I build different things more. I built the pintles and gudgeons by bending a brass strip to the correct shape. Since I don't know how to solder, I used ca to attach the wire for the hinge system. I glued the parts to the hull and rudder with medium consistency ca. I used acrylic paint, but still had to do touch up work to make up for where it peeled of. The top set of hinges is slightly crooked, but there is nothing I can do now . Oh well, first model. I will be taking a break from the main build to make the launching ways. This will be the permanent base. It should be good that I do this now, as school has started, and I have less time for building. I'm glad I am doing this now because she has gotten a bit knocked about, and I don't want to lose any more copper plates ! Here are the pictures!

This is where I get to the fun part . Until next time!

Your stanchions look great, Elijah.  I'll be interested in how your rudder mounting turns out.  I hate metal work, so the method used to mount my AVS rudder is interesting in that there is no soldering involved in forming the gudgeons and pintles.   Here's a link:

Thank you everybody! I have finished the stanchions, and am working on the pintles and gudgeons.

Until next time, when I have the rudder installed!

    Hi again Jerry,

A few detail photos for you. You can see in the second photo as to how shinny the deck is. So much so
that I actually thought it was covered with water. Young lady in pic is a working crew member. Good bless her.
Was unsuccessful in getting an overall shot.

BTW I also learned that the Bounty replica was also built in Lunenburg. Never did get to see the shipyard

Good afternoon, John and many thanks for the wonderful photo of the Bluenose. I'm sorry that I didn't get to visit the Waterfron Restaurant when we were in Halifax a couple of summers ago.  OMG, it looks like I have a lot of sail work to do one of these days.  This picture really illustrates how much sail area this ship had..

Many thanks for your kind words regarding the build and I am pleased to submit a few more pictures as to where the build stands today.

Have a very nice evening and please visit again.
    Best,
    Jerry
