IgorSky reacted to Dimitris71 in Amerigo Vespucci by Dimitris71 - Mantua - 1:100 scale
Hello to all!!
At last, Amerigo Vespucci has arrived! This is my second ship build.
First impressions: wood quality is better than that of my previous build and the manual, consists of 9 large sheets with general instructions (compared to the step by step manual of the previous build).
Attached you may find photos from unpacking the kit and first dry fit.
And now comes my first question:
Starting from the bottom of the keel, at which distance should I carve the rabbet line?
Thank you in advance for your help
Dimitris

Hi all
A very quick update. I'm still working on the internal bulkheads and getting the layout of the accommodation sorted out. She looks very rough, but, there's still lots of work to go!
Cheers and all the best!

Here is a small progress report, But progress none the less, I started by looking for the box containing the parts that I had made, I then brushed off the Dust from the Deck, then cleaned up and Dry fit the parts. Next I located the sheet containing the Logos cut them out and applied them to the Bow ( I know that the year is wrong, these were the ones that fit best, so I went with it ) Next, Hopefully, this Weekend I will get the Mast and Boom made. Here are the results

IgorSky reacted to shipmodel in Bristol Pilot Cutter by michael mott - 1/8 scale - POF
Hi Michael -
Really nice hinges. I used a similar method to make working hinges for the companionway door of a yacht America model some time ago. I do not have your skill with a jeweler's saw, so I used a length of soft iron wire inside to form the hinge barrels, and then cut straight through the whole thing with a metal cutting blade in the Preac. I think they came out pretty well.
Either great minds think alike, or fools rarely differ, whichever one applies. :-))

Hi everyone- thanks for all of your comments and Likes. Always appreciated.
Well, woohoo!!! Who's a happy boy, then?
It's only taken me a few days of head scratching and brain cells, but I've finally figured out how to get the stern door (which leads to the tender garage) to work. Part of the secret was to use a paper hinge and to get the pivot point of the hinge positioned 'just right'.
There's still a lot of finessing to go, but at least the door works and that's all that matters at this stage. I can start sanding and painting it later.
Anyhow, here's the photos.
Cheers

The steering wheel, from a brass blind nut (Why waste money for a expensive 1m, 12mm DIA bar?).

IgorSky reacted to *Hans* in Batavia by *Hans* - FINISHED
Thanks Hartmut!
It already has been a while since I finished her, and after that I started with a Greek Trireme (see my signature)
This one however has come to a temorary stop due to the fact I started making wooden building kits of the Batavia. There are hardly any Dutch 17th century ships as kit available so I started to fill this gap.
Working model for the Batavia kit was/is the "Dordrecht" from 1618 - a sister ship of the Batavia and the previous vessel Francesco Pelsaert sailed on. There is no build log on the Dordrecht, but here some images of her stern:

I made all the ornaments for the Batavia kit in cast resin, but have also started making these in white metal. I made a special casting mould of heat-resistant silicone and started pouring.
The white figure you see is a special order for a customer in South Africa. The red fluid is silicone on the fresly made new ornament for the Batavia.
Although not very clear, left the mould and right the first attempts.

And promised - the painted version of the lantern for the East Indiaman:
Top painted in dark brown copper - lantern in yellow plus earth grey shade over it. I'm not satisfied yet about the painting.

Just one extra post in this topic. As many of you already know I'm busy on a modelkit of the Batavia. This comes available 2nd half of june. It is possible for me to send worldwide, but have to consider postal costs and dutypapers. Please feel free to have a look at my website as mentioned hereunder.
One of the items in the box is the lantern. This is made of three cast resin pieces - the base and the cap, and the middle piece of transparent resin:
This is the rough version - it needs some sanding and of course painting. I will post a painted version later.

On the Batavia there were many statues who were placed in such a way that they could look around the whole surrounding of the ship - thus preventing it against the influences of bad ghosts (people were very superstitious in the 17th century).
It didn't help the Batavia...
On the stern are four statues of men who where some more important in the Dutch history:
(from left to right)
- Brinio - leader of the Caninefaten. The Caninefates were one of the original tribes of the lowlands. They fought together with Julius Civilis, leader of the Bataven (another tribe living in the lowlands) against the Romans - roughly 69 AC
- Julius Civilis (aka Caius Julius Civilius) - leader of the batavian rebellion against the Romans as mentioned.
- Willem van Oranje (1533-1584), leader of the Dutch rebellion against Spain (which started the 80 year war against Spain) and in 1648 led to the foundation of the Netherlands as indipendent republic.
- Maurits van Oranje (1567 - 1625), his son - stadholder and commander of the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands
These statues are all on the replica of the Batavia in Lelystad, Netherlands.
(It is not sure if these were on the original Batavia which shipwrecked in 1629)

This evening I did some small work on the stern.
First some drawing
Then the carving
And adding some greenstuff for the difficult details
Because in the 17th century the Dutch did not goldplate it (too expencive) it was all painted in a yellow okre. This still has to be done on my stern.

Although the hull and all its parts are not finished yet I already did start with the masts.
The carvings on the stern and gallery of the ship, the rudder and som rail still have to be made, but I like the view of a model with some masts on it.

With special modelling clay I make the small figures on the stern
This is the last photo for now. Overview over the deck with the hole for the main mast already drilled.
In the near future I will post some more photo's - but I think it will take another 6 months before she is ready for sailing out.

The stern with its nice carvings is a bit of a challenge.
My son doing some paintwork.
The shield is from the city of Amsterdam where the original Batavia was build in 1626-1627

Scratch building is - to my opinion - about the same as building out of a wooden kit. The only diffirence is that you have nothing - and have to buy every piece of wood and every fittingpart yourself.
Doors
Prefab upper hull planking
Hatches made
Coverings

Recently I have started the scratch building of the Dutch VOC Vessel Batavia, which shipwrecked on her maiden voyage on the 4th of june 1629 - near to the australian westcoast at morning reef near Beacon Island. If you do some research on the internet you will find a lot of information about the shipwrecking of the Batavia and all that happened afterwards...
As there is no wooden model kit for the Batavia I bought me the plans which where made on the Dutch shipyard "Bataviawerf" in Lelystad, Netherlands - and started the model from scratch. In this topic you'll find the pictures I made during the building proces - started beginning of december 2013 up until now. I'm about halfway building the Batavia.
I started with plywood and a jigsaw...
Keel and frames
