That's looking great! I wish I would have boxed in the gun ports like on my last two ships. I am now sanding the metal ones down to fit my framing. Unfortunatey I followed the directions, should have known better. Waitoa, your pix show going higher on The planking, is this a modification you are doing to make it more like the real Surprise? If so how much higher are you taking it? Also are you planning on framing the inside of the decks with horizontal strips? Please let me know, you're my mentor! Thanks so much.

Wow, I didn,t realize they were out of business. Bad news I can't rely on customer support for shortages, etc. Good news is there is an opportunity for a new, better company to make great kits. From my 3 builds, I think the kits could be a whole lot better. There are many very talented folks on here that should do a startup. Unfortunately, I don't have any venture capital but if ya need a CEO, computer guy, or bean counter, let me know. Mark, thanks for info, it all helps. I am still struggling through 1st planking with metal gun ports, big mistake. I thought the gap on the stern was for the 1st planking, oh well, it's amazing what I can do with enough sand paper. Does anyone have a good reccomendation on paints? I think I am good for the metal stuff, but on the wood, what works well and what colors do ya think? Best all!

Fun with guns, I should be reading this more often. I followed the instructions, started the hull planking with the first plank bottom even with the bottom of the gun deck. Then came up to put the plank that the gun ports are to rest on top of that and there wasn't enough room for the guns ports... So took first plank off reinstalled gun port support plank and have installed ports. Then realised that if I don't attach the guns to the carriages I won't be able to get them in after planking. The problem is that you can't sand the gun ports to be flush with the planking with the guns sticking out. So I am now removing the weather deck to have access. At least reading the recent posts I see that we're all in the same boat. Thanks all.

Okay so I received my new kit yesterday, and am all excited. Believe me it is very cool. But… I’m gonna complain a bit… This is my third wooden ship model and I’m still wondering why the instructions are so poorly written in English? My first build was the USS Falcon by Artesania Latina and the instructions were very bad. My next endeavor was the HMS Snake by Caldercraft, silly me thinking a UK company would be clearer but not so much… So now I Have the HMS Surprise by Mamoli and as I have said it is very cool, but the parts lists are all in Italian which I will work around but why is it so hard? And another issue I have is why make folks paint/dye the lines black and not just supply them as black? I had this issue on the HMS Snake and had dots of black dye on the deck I had worked so hard on. Do you all dye them before putting them on, shield the deck, or just but buy black lines? Please let me know. Thanks, Dave

Hi, Looks like great stuff, I just bought this model from the UK folks and hope to have it in a week or so. This will be my third build and am following yours closely. Friggin things take me years but I realy enjoy the journey. I want to try to bash the kit to make it more realistic as you have done so I will be following you, Bindy, and cptn71 for tips. Not sure about posting my own build as I think they are amazing many folks here may find faults. I just finished the HMS Snake and did the USCG Falcon a couple of years back. Your build looks great, did you use graphite between the deck planks? Please let me know. Thanks for your help, Dave
