Thank you Bensid54. Building with raw material at hand is quite an experience. In a Zen like way I think it gives me a better understanding of shipbuilding. Walter

Elijah, A sandbar is a raised area of sand. At high tide around here they are under water. At low tide many of them are above water and appear as Islands or larger land masses. Walter

Thank you Bob and Elijah. I sure did a happy dance. There were two small leaks which are now patched up and nothing fell apart in between soaking and drying. When she's complete I'm looking forward to taking her out to the bay at low tide and letting her sail between sandbars. Walter

Hi, Got some work done on the rudder. I also had to see how it would float. I’m thinking of making this a very small pond yacht. Walter

Bensid54, Cutting the lengths are easy, I use a pair of wire cutters. A good crimp will cause a nice split down the length. Once the split has started just pull it apart. A finishing plane and sand paper are use to complete the plank. From my bamboo I can get 9 inch (230 mm) lengths. Walter

Hi, Thank you Bensid54 and David. The type of Bamboo I'm using is Yellow Grove. So far so good. This type has a nice flat spot which is allowing me to make some nice wide planks which will come in handy for spiling. Walter

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
