Spent some time, but it doesn't look like much done today. The front bridge requires cutting, filing, and sanding before adding photo etch details to build it. The entire deck gets replaced. Structural details, gussets, portholes and doors have to be added. Next will be a host of other bits and pieces including guns, before the bridge is done. This will take a few days before taking on the rear bridge which is nearly a clone of the front bridge. A little difference, but not a lot.

When you go to apply these Pontos wooden decks, be prepared to spend several hours carefully trimming the edges so the thing will fit - before you attempt to apply it. They are not as precise as they should be and are definitely not a drop fit. Once you peel off that adhesive backing and start applying it to your model, there is no turning back. It's a wrap.
Before I bought the Pontos update set, I had bought an Artvox wood deck. I could have used the Artvox deck to see if it was more precisely cut, but the Pontos deck is made to go along with their update set whereas the Artvox deck is made to fit/use the stock kit fittings and molded on detail that was removed from my deck in the initial stages of construction.
Just to give you an idea of how far off it is, look at the red arrow that shows the pre-made holes in the plastic deck as opposed to where Pontos has placed the holes in their wooden deck. Close, but no cigar. It won't be hard to drill new holes in the plastic beneath the wood, but it will have to be done.
Remember the old carpenter's addage when you're trimming that wood deck..."you can take more off, but you can't add more back on." Trim and cut very small amounts at a time until you get the fit you want.

I am learning real fast that building a pre-dreadnaught model is far different than a modern warship. Construction and painting sequence is foreign to me. The hull has so much more detail than a modern warship. I should have added these gun port covers and painted them along with the captain's walkway at the stern of the ship yesterday. it would have saved me an additional masking task.
Although there is a lot more detail to be added to the hull, I am going to move to the deck and superstructure next. I am concerned that if I add more hull details now, I will damage and lose them while handling the model during the remainder of construction.

Does This Catwalk Make My Butt Look Big?
I got a little work done on the stern of the IJN Mikasa today.
Following Jack's advice, I took the last two photos with a piece of tissue covering the flash. The other pictures are taken without a flash, low light.
That worked well, Jack! Thanks for the tip.

This is where I left off and where I begin, again. Gun port doors. Builder has the option of posing the doors either opened or closed. I'm going to have to carefully examine the locations of the several torpedo net booms that line each side of the ship so that installation of the doors (open doors in my case) don't interfere with the installation of the boom hanging hardware.

Yes, a very nice destroyer model indeed. I'm really enjoying this thread with the variety of renditions of the same ship. Each one has it's own set of outstanding qualities and express the creativeness of the individual modeler.

With some paint and a few more details added.
Sorry, but my lighting and photography skills are awful.
Will build some small guns that go on the bridge next.

    Thanks for the photos, OC.

Yesterday, Popeye had asked whether I needed to remove some round spots on the wooden deck. I answered, no, they were markers for some unidentified PE disks that are shown on the plans but not identified for what they are. In later conversation, we decided the round covers are actually coal chutes...where they loaded coal for firing the turbines into the ship's hold. These covers are dotted all over the deck of the ship. My comment was simply that the actual parts are not identified as to what function they serve. But I think we have that much cleared up now. Thanks!

Must have been one heck of a big sweat shop in that hold below for all the poor blokes shoveling coal.
No wonder this ship has so many ventilators. Lots and lots of coal dust.

Thanks, Ken. I'll bet you're right. Never thought of that.
In 1:1 scale, these covers would measure approximately 2' in diameter. About the size of a manhole cover.

Yes, I have the full instructions that came with the Pontos set, if that's what you are asking. But there is nothing on the instructions that identifies what the various parts are, just their identification number in the Pontos scheme of things and drawings to indicate where they are attached.
They (round disks) are fairly prominent on any 1/200 scale rendering of the Pontos equipped Mikasa, but I have yet to read anyone give a name to the object. I presume they are some type of cover for something, What, I do not know.

Evening all,   a bit more progress today this time on the hull,  first off I ftted the last two booms  - simple operation just cut from the fret trim up and glue in place then painted hull color,  next was the two main anchors and the spare one - these are the kit plastic ones as they are quite a good shape, I trimmed the pips of the edges and gave the edges more shape, then I attached the shank uisng ca  for strength,  then I painted all three the same color as the hull  and added a slight dry brush on the edges, then I glued them into place.
Next I decided to have a go at some paravane cables,  first off I needed some very fine wire - so I found a way to create some,  inner brass wire from low voltage wiring (like phone chargers)   I found an old one with about a meter length so it was just a case of stripping the outer casing then each positive and negative till I found the brass inner thin wire, I cut a length about a 8 inches long, then I centered the mid point around the inner first bollard and added a touch of ca to the wire, this held it in place, then I pulled the wires forward and over the extreme front hull and down to the bottom of the hull and fixed them from both ends into the anchor hole points.
Then a coat of flat black.

    Just the two pics today.

Nice that they give you the boom cables with the photo etch. A very realistic look to it, the way the cables sag and all. I like it.

Once again, you've done some remarkable brush work on that crane. It looks outstanding, OC. You must have a very small brush to paint inside that boom.?
PS: I like the combination of kit parts with the photo etch ones to build your crane. Looks very good that way.
