Yet Another Pandora 3D build
herask replied to herask's topic in CAD and 3D Modelling/Drafting Plans with Software
hello, guys. not much progress this time. fore square frames up to dead flat are done... and I've removed support rods, they were starting to get in the way and were a pain to setup. good thing digital frames can stand on their own... 😁- 110 replies

I thought of making the hull shell in Fusion 360 or Plasticity, but that involves using one more software, learning user interface, learning CAD workflow, import export... The truth is, as I grow older I'm less and less inclined to bother myself with unnecessary cr... er, stuff. so I kept things simple and did everything within blender... great piece of software that one... 😁- 110 replies

ok, here you can see a NURBS curve, and bellow is a simple vertex extruded edge with subdivision modifier lvl4. the result is almost the same, yet allows for more freedom than CAD program. at least for me. I like pushing vertices around, although the result might not be the perfect smooth shape as with CAD, but that's OK, I'm not designing mechanical device, I'm merely making a visualization of one... here you can see the ship's hull which I duplicated and then cut out frames, which I then shrinkwrap back on the first hull shell to keep the shape of all the frames consistent:- 110 replies

I'll try to post some examples on how I tackled ship's hull shell just with some edge loops and subdivision modifier. it resembles NURBS workflow yet still allows some freedom...- 110 replies

oh, now I get it. we'll, I think that Blender is a mixed bag when it comes to complex shapes. on one hand, CAD software allows greater precision in modeling but only if you already know what you're doing and have detailed plans. on the other hand, if you're stuck with badly scanned plans with a lot of distortion, then Blender allows for easier adjustments and corrections along the way. at least that's the way I see it. to give you more precise answer I'd have to build one of these ships fully in CAD to really get to know both camps.- 110 replies

thank you for your comments, guys! 😊 glad you like the ship. Waldemar, to answer your question is Blender really optimal for this? honestly, I don't know. it handled Pegasus pretty well, so I guess it will handle Pandora as equally well, and that's probably what matters the most. "if it works...", right? the thing is, the ship is not really that detailed. I'm making the frames the same way I made those for Pegasus, despite now having newer computer and beefier GPU, because I don't really need that much polygons. if you look at the renders at the shipyard, you can't really see facets and edges although they're quite large. just look at this screengrab from Blender: that's pretty much low poly mesh right there. for an object that's quite as tall as this frame is, you'd think you'd notice polygons when camera gets close, but in reality that's not (always) the case. so there was no need to go overboard with subdivision modifiers and whatnot. so, yeah, I think that Blender is OK for this. I thought about making Pandora in Fusion360 or Plasticity, and as much as I'd like to do it in CAD program I seriously doubt I'd have as much fun as I have working in Blender. we just clicked from day one like 13 years ago and I still enjoy using it, and even if Blender wasn't optimal tool for this (and there's no reason for me to think it isn't) I'd still be using it because it's the tool I'm most comfortable with, and that's what matters the most. oh, and since UE5 literally eats polygons for breakfast because of Nanite tech, I could've exported Pandora with subsurf modifier even if I wasn't going to use it in Blender, but I actually forgot to add it... 🤣- 110 replies

Druxey, it is if I forget to change the weather. 🤣 but, to my defense, today was sunny around here, so yeah... counter frames and head pieces done. I know, counter frames are just hanging there, but for now they will stay so, until other timbers that connect them are done... and NOW square frames will follow...- 110 replies

Nate, thank you for the illustration, this makes things a lot clearer and a lot more sense that what I had in mind. my version is simplified (or unnecessary complicated, depends on one's view). your way is actually a lot better and now I'll have to rework those frames. good thing I'm reworking cant frames anyway (that's a as far as I got), so no biggie. thank you again... just one more question. was raising wood continuous like mine or did it have scores for frames?- 110 replies

Druxey, you mean something like this? Greg, sadly no. I don't have a copy of that book. I'll have to make do with what references I can find online and with generous help from you guys. but, the shipyard is just a sideshow anyway. Pandora is the main star...- 110 replies

hey Nate! thank you for your input. ok, let's see... 1. I like modeling my vehicles so they face either X+ or Y- axis, and viewed from front or right orthographic view. no particular reason, that's how I started modeling, I guess, by following tutorials. it's the second nature to me by now. if I oriented Pandora on Y- axis, from right ortho, the ship would be oriented from right to left on screen, the plans would be viewed from back, thus appearing mirrored. so for me only other choice was front ortho and X+ axis orientation. plans just sit naturally that way... 2. I put my origin there so when adjusting and resizing plans they scale from one side instead of from the middle. easier to adjust... I might as well move everything to (+) station now. good point... 3. no, I haven't yet. I'll deal with it once I get there. I already figured this out once, just have to remember how... 4. the origin will stay at the bottom of the false keel. so when you drag the ship into the scene in UE5 it snaps to terrain instead of sinking in to wherever the origin is. again, just personal preference... 5. you mean, the rabbet stops here: hm, yeah, my rabbet goes al the way to the sternpost and twists like on Pegasus. but then, what that line actually is, the one that goes beyond red mark? 6. I didn't model the rabbet with the straight bottom rabbet. again, my resembles that on Pegasus. can you clarify or show on your model a bit more? I can't really visualize it... 7. I believe that false keel was laid sometimes later by knocking off those smallest top pieces of wood on keel blocks and slipping false keel inside... I think I've read it somewhere but for the life of me can't remember where... but in 3D visualizations it doesn't really matter, it's just easier to position everything right from the start and add stuff later than move stuff back and fort, especially with hundreds of objects in the scene. yeah, some things might float in the air at some point- 110 replies

Thank you Greg! I agree, Pandora is a really great looking ship, and I'm currently really enjoying working on her. AOTS Pandora is definitely not without its little quirks, but for a nice looking ship it'll do. Pandora will not be as accurate as the Pegasus was but that's not the goal here. that said, I do have my TFFM books at hand, and The Elements and Practice..., and Construction and fitting..., and Arming and fitting... regarding Pegasus, she'll most definitely end up in one of the slipways. how could she not, haha? it's just, it'll probably happen during my first burn out that will inevitably happen sooner or later. I need to import her into the software and that will take a while, so yes, but later...- 110 replies

Nate, thank you for your input. what you said actually makes a lot of sense. I didn't think of our two builds competing with each other, but rather people getting bored with the same ship 😁. personally, I'm also leaning more toward Pandora, and indeed it might be fun having a group project. OK, you talked me into it 🤣 I've a few more things to wrap up with the shipyard and then I'll have to catch up with your build, as I plan to start over with the Pandora. I didn't know a lot back then when I started it the first time and a few things need to be done better and more accurate. and once I do build Bounty we can send both our Pandoras after her. poor thing won't stand a chance... 😅- 110 replies
